Moved from Detroit to NYC for graduate school and will graduate with an MSW next year and the wife wants to move out of the city. Not sure where we'll end up as of yet, but it's going to be either east coast or west coast blue states for sure. Canada is a possibility but there's complications with moving to another country.

I just moved to Phoenix last August. We love it here. Some of the advantages:

    1) excellent job market
    2) relatively cheap housing
    3) good nightlife
    4) the weather (October through April is gorgeous)
    5) Its a transient city... most everyone here is from the Midwest or East Coast... lots of people who are doing the same thing as you.

    Diadvantages:

    1) Lack of culture
    2) no public transportation to speak of
    3) the weather (June through August can be unbearable for some)
    4) Its a LOOOOONG flight back to the east coast... and that means $$$

I'll be moving to Australia within the year...as soon as my visa has been approved - so probably 8-12 months. So far the visa process has been fairly easy, and I have had really good luck with the job search. The most daunting issue is the cost of moving all of my stuff there! Even if I share a crate it will be a majore expense. Any suggestions from anyone who's moved overseas?

I haven't every moved overseas, but I'd think you'd want to just take the bare essentials (clothes, what else?) and put everything else in storage, especially if you are only staying for 1 year or less.

You should be able to bring everything with you on the flight over...

If you need a car I'd just buy a high mile POS and then resell it when you leave.

I'll be moving there permanently. I have a whole house full of stuff  I'm ditching the furniture and any electronics since they won't be compatible...but I have a lot of paintings done by family/friends that I don't want to get rid of and heirlooms from my grandmother. I don't want to ship them..but don't want to part with them either.

I plan on building a catamaran and sailing around the world with my family. Living off the ocean and staying for a month or so whenever we make it to land. That's about 8 years in the future, though, and until then I won't be relocating.

thats exactly what i want to do. can i come? i can help build and sail and whatever...i want to live on the ocean and just travel the seas. how do i make it happen?! sounds like you got a plan....clue me in please!!!

Do it...You will not have any regrets! I miss home, but I can always go home - nothing really has changed. I move to Nor Cal from Seattle.
    I just keep moving on....

realistically...how much money do you need to just pick up and move across the county...or maybe a different country?
