I plan on building a catamaran and sailing around the world with my family. Living off the ocean and staying for a month or so whenever we make it to land. That's about 8 years in the future, though, and until then I won't be relocating.
    can I come? :)

    I swear I'll be good :o
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"
    Wembley? We all believe!
Copenhagen?? your light made us stars
    Chicago 07? And love
    What a different life

I grew up in a city just north of Boston, and lived there until I went to college in MD and then returned for graduate school. I met my husband when I returned, and moved to California shortly after graduating. He is from CA and couldn't stand Boston, so moving wasn't a hard decision for us. That said, there are times when I miss certain things. I never miss the crowds, fast-past, traffic or winters, though. We've been out here for 8 years now, and love it. As far as advice, I think it depends on how long you've lived in Boston, where you're from originally and what you're "used" to, and what type of environment you thrive in. The West Coast is very different, which was great for us, but not so much for others.

Is anyone in a similar position? Or has anyone decided to pick up and move elsewhere? I'd appreciate your thoughts and/or advice?
I've been seriously considering moving to Alaska sometime soon, and I would appreciate any advice as well...

i like to move every couple years. it started w/ a move to austin to find a job, then went from there. i think it's fun to see what different cities have to offer...good and bad. it's a learning and growing experience for me. and i always figure...if i don't like it, then i'll just move back to where i was! that's what i did when i lived in miami...hated it, so i moved back to orlando.

i can't wait to finally get out of florida again. i plan on being out on the west coast by april...i can't wait. hopefully my job will cooperate!

I wouldn't mind moving to northern San Antonio. It seems
to have a lot to offer; cheap houses (even compared to all other TX cities),
The River Walk, Sea World, Six Flags, The Alamo
(at least good for aone-time visit), beautiful scenery (hill country w/
hills, lakes, and rivers), unique downtown area, close
to Austin (another great city), two hours from the
ocean, within driving distance to Dallas and Houston,
known to be one of the few huge cities that has a
small town feel; no winters, hurricanes, earthquakes,
wild fires, or tornadoes; year round planting (to
combat the rising cost of food), known for
extraordinary friendliness, great schools (at least in
the north), no state income tax, interesting Mexican
    culture and authentic Mexican chow

Are you in witness protection or is your picture in the Post Office? :)

I am considering moving back to Virginia. it's hard because I love Boston, but I already established myself here once, and with the divorce I dont't know if I can put the rest of my life on hold waiting to get back in the black.

I will always love Boston though. If I do leave, I am hoping to come back asap.

That's cool. I've traveled all over the U.S. and I know there is no area I would rather live than where I am now.

Hey, I'm from CT (live in MA now). But I lived in AZ for 2.5 years (way too fucking hot for this New Englander). I had to move back. Plus, I've traveled to 48 of our states. The more I travel the happier I am about living here. Plus, AZ wasn't any cheaper than living here. Some things are cheaper but gas and food cost more. Housing prices were equal to MA prices.

You make some great points. I've traveled a bit as well (but not to all 50 states) and to be honest, I've always been happy to come back to NE as well.

I guess maybe I'm just overwhelmed and tired right now, with work and school and a marriage gone bad. Maybe I'll find some time for a vacation to visit some of the places I'd like to move during the off season to seeif I can take the weather, etc.

    Thanks for the input.

Hmm, I've never been to San Antonio and it does sound interesting. I'm going to have to check it out.

I hear you about the divorce thing. I'll be divorced a year in a couple of months and it took me quite a while both financially and emotionally. It's part of the reason why I'm considering a move now.

However, reading som of the posts here, I've come to realize that I need to think this out a little more closely. I do love Boston though.

Just do it!! It will be an experience you will never regret. I moved from NY to CA 6 years ago. I had $1000 in the bank and off I went. Life is better out here. The journey has been something that has been paid back to me a million times the $1000. There's nothing to lose by moving, only experiences to gain.

I love that you all just took off and left. I kinda did that, but gradually. I'm eternally greatful that I did it now though, I actually like living in Dublin besides the whole ridiculously expensive rent :( I would give anything to have 10k in the bank and a one way flight booked.

I'd love to relocate but unfortuantely, I live and work in the city. Coming from a semi-rural village, I find it hard not being able to just go for long undisturbed walks through the beautiful, British countryside.
When I get older I'd love to move somewhere rural and peaceful like The Lake or Peak District, somewhere I can just escape and embrace the world.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Thats the total opposite to me. Having grown up in the bogarse of nowhere, I now like the fact that I can walk to a shop and not trek for 2 hours! Ireland is small though, within a half hours drive I can be back in the bogland, or if I'm stuck can walk beside the sea.

:D I dunno... after having lived in Dublin for 8 years now  I'm well and truly getting sick of the place... and crave some countryside every now and then. I wouldn't make the big leap of moving straight into the middle of nowhere.. but a small rural town would be nice :)

I agree. So you have the luxury of civilisation and the countryside on your doorstep. That's why the Lake district or Peak district would be perfect for me... plus, good mountain biking country ;)

:D even though where I live is ALMOST suburban... you don't have to drive for too long to find some countryside... and we've the biggest urban park in europe right beside us... I just love the tranquility when I visit my sister though.

It's time you start travelling though Sian :)
