    I love snakes! :)

Even though I've been bitten by one (non venomous :) ) and nearly bitten by several (highly venomous  ), unfortunately on occasion we've had to kill them.

What we do here is keep an eye out for them all the time and if we're walking in areas where they are, always with the thick socks and solid boots, big stick and the dogs. When we have had to kill one, we always hang it over the fence so that others know they're about. It's sort of an unwritten rule between neighbours up at the farm. Having said that it's really not that difficult to keep an eye out for them and avoid them so we can all get along happily. :) I much prefer them alive than dead. :)

I've always loved snakes - think they're fascinating creatures. Plus they're useful as they help keep the vermin population to manageable levels.
I love sharks too - used to watch Shark Week every year on cable.
I can't stand spiders though...they freak me out.

I'm with you, except for the spiders. I actually like them too! Just not in the house. I try to save them and take them outside where they belong, but sometimes I have to just stomp them. :D

I couldn't copy the link, and I think it's from this week's show coming up, but on msn there's a video of Bear Grylls wacking a puff adder on the head, cutting the head off, and then just biting right into the body raw, scales and all.
Bear Grylls is full of shit... it was either already dead... or he was cut and pasted into one of the crocodile dundee films!

C'mon people... one of the great things about being intelligent beings is that we can at least control our irrationalities. I can understand people who have genuine phobias of snakes... but most people are scared of snakes because they don't know very much about them...

Perhaps it is different in the US, but the majority of Australians sprout extra dimmensions of bullshit when they start talking about snakes.

Snakes are not aggresive, they are defensive. Snakes bite people as a defence mechanism (unless it's a big python or an anaconda- then they bite as a feeding mechanism!). In my previous job as education manager at a wildlife park, I was always amazed at the number of people who called a snake aggresive because it tried to bite them after they hit it with a shovel.

Add this to other 'myths' such as the idea that snakes can move quickly across the ground, or that you should suck the poison out if somebody is bitten.

Here (where 9 out of the 10 most venemous species of snakes are from), an average of 3 people die from snake bite every year, and the majority of them are trying to catch or kill the snake when they are bitten.

So lay off the snakes! They already have a bad image problem. In fact go one better... Spread the love for snakes (in an entirely literal sense). Pull somebody up if they are spreading the BS and re-educate them.

Thanks. Rant over. I feel better now.

Yeah, I'm always amazed at that reaction myself. It's like, if you tried to harm another person what are they going to do, take it? Hell no, they are fighting back!

I've always liked snakes. Growing up we usually had a green snake as a pet. Not bad pets at all, plus if company had overstayed their welcome you could always say that it was time to take the snake out of it's terrarium and the guests would be ready to go in no time :)

In the wild I'm always cautious if I can identify it as venomous (in my part of the world we only have copperheads, rattlers, and water moccasins) and try to keep my distance, especially if I'm not 100% familiar with my surroundings. For other types of snakes that I know are not venomous, I'm generally not too worried how close I get to them as I'm not going to provoke them to attack. With the venomous ones, my thoughts are always better safe than sorry.

I don't know, I think this one was real. it wasn't like when he "trapped" the rabbit. Plus now after all the backlash about stuff being fake, whenever the do fake stuff, they tell you- bear's voice over goes "I wasn't able to catch the snake, but luckily one of the crew just happened to have a dead one on hand." but there wasn't a disclaimer on this one. killing the snake wasn't very impressive (and I really hate when he kills animals) but when he just bit right into it- ugh, you know that's real. nasty.

:D TBH I dunno much about him but my boyfriend and his friends watch him all the time even though they laugh at it. Have you seen his 'mission everest' thing? What a pile of disrespectful bollox... and his 'best friend' is as gay as his seriously gay name, Gilo... and he's obviously in love with Bear. It was almost cute seeing him flirt with Bear and Bear thinking 'yes, I am the man of this relationship... I am man... I go eat snake'

haha I watch him all the time. I don't think I've seen the mission everest thing, but it looked lame in the ads. Honestly as much as that show gets crap for being fake, bear really is so much more bad-ass than anyone I'd ever meet, which is weird because he does have a slightly feminine quality to him...the climbing he does really the best part of the show.

    ok...sorry to derail...back to snakes.

I fucking hate snakes. Even thinking about one slithering across the road sends chills up my spine.

I would much prefer Carl Spakler take care of any vermin that might lurk in my yard. http://www.eagleparbirdie.com/50226711/bill%20murray.jpg

i agree. i dont think this snake was being agressive for the sake of being agressive. it was hurt. damn near cut in half. i felt bad for it.

and i do have a slight phobia. i can deal with snakes, i just dont like to be surprised by them : )

I agree too. I don't have any problem with them per se, but they do have a tendency to startle. And I don't want them in my house, but I don't want ANY animals that don't bark or meow in my house.
