All this chat of Baseball and the likes got me wondering...any "soccer" fans over here? Ya know, football (Not the one with the shoulder pads and the advertisements, the one with the overpaid foreigners and the silky skills..) and all that?

2 words: LEEDS UNITED

i was with you until you said Leeds United.

that team sucks more than a fat asthmatic fluffer.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I play soccer for fun in a weeknight coed league (and EVERYONE plays as kids)
but I really only watch the world cup, we don't get too many games televised on basic cable.

    Rangers F.C for life :)

Ah... the days of Super Ally, "Godrup" and a vaguely sane Gazza.

When I have children, it first off want them to be healthy, but secondly I don't want them to ever want to play soccer. I hate the game, and parents get way to involved in it around here, I've never seen a sport that if, scheduled properly, one can play year round.

what amazes me is the same people who say this will sit infront of baseball for 5 hours.

don't get me wrong, I like baseball too, but soccer is like 10000 more exciting.

I think people just think it's boring to watch because they're used to having commercials every 10 seconds when they watch sports.

Or it could be entirely based on opinion ;)

I'm a fan of the game. My club is Houston Dynamo. But I'll watch Premier League, Bundesliga, Spanish League games whenever I get an opportunity. In the U.S. there's a great channel for soccer called Fox Soccer Channel. They show games from all over. Unfortunately it's through Fox but principles be damned, they have some great games.

yeah my parents have this channel.

was this what used to be called "fox sports world" or is it entirely different?

I agree that baseball isn't terribly exciting. However, I think it would be alot more exciting if there were less games. Playoff baseball is fun to watch.

Anyway, I'm not in a minority (with my opinion) here... atleast in the states. In the US, soccer isn't considered a major sport even though it's played by more young kids than any other sport.

I rank sports as follows (in terms of watching):

    Football (major)
    Basketball (major)
    Surfing
    Baseball (major)
    Hockey (major)
    LaCrosse
    Golf...

    ...somewhere about 50 or so....

Soccer is boring because the game is 90 minutes and there's an average of 8 shots on goal per game. If they shrunk the field or figured out a way to keep it from being 75% of the game being played in the middle 1/3 of the field it'd be better.

As for soccer being played by the most young kids...that's because it's easy to set up, and cheap to play.

Soccer will never take off because there's no money in it. If you're that good of an athlete, would you pick being drafted by the NFL/MLB or MLS? It's not even a choice really.

I find each play exciting, it doesn't have to be a shot- it's more about who wins the ball? what's the strategy? what cool footwork and athleticism(sp?) will they use? It's really not any different from football. it's not they score touchdowns every two seconds either. In fact it took me so long to get into football because it takes so gd long for anything to go ANYWHERE.

well there's only no money in it because there's no money it...chicken and egg thing. but in terms of athletes choosing...people who become professional atheletes choose their sports when they're like 5. If you play football, you play football. if you play golf, you play golf. you can be an all around good athlete but at the pro level, you stick with what you've been trained at for years. There are exceptions, but I don't think too many 20 year old guys are waking up and saying "hmm, should I try out for the mlb or the nfl today?"

That's not what I meant. I meant by the time kids get to high school, if they're even remotely talented enough to perhaps start to think about sports as a viable future, of course they'd pick something other then soccer to focus on because there is no future there (even if it is the kid's favorite sport).

well maybe but even then if you've been playing soccer as a kid and you're really good at it, you're going to go out for high school soccer team, not the high school football team because you don't know if you're any good at football, even if you're overall "athletic". I think if you grow up playing TWO sports like say football and baseball then yeah, you might start thinking along those lines as to what you're going to focus on. but if you're outstanding at soccer, then you're outstanding at soccer. And as someone mentioned, kids play soccer ALL year, so there's a good chance you don't even get try other stuff.

and don't forget there are different body types involved in these things too.

hehe, americans' understanding of "soccer" is hilarious. - "there's not enough shots on goal".

ugh. How do you people enjoy baseball?

maybe for some, but do you realise how easy these players make it look?!?! the game is class, there is soo much skill involved. goals aren't everything, i've seen some AMAZING 0-0 draws. guess it depends on the style of game the teams play though, being an arsenal fan i'm spoiled. they can be frustrating at times when they trying to walk the ball into the back of the net, but they play BEAUTIFUL football! :D

he was saying there's no money in it in the states, as a reason for why it's not popular in the states.
