If you don't already know 17 week old Gracie from ~*~*~the doggie thread~*~*~, here she is:

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll56/ddgrh8r/DSC_0174.jpg

Last night she started to have bad diarrhea. She had 8 runny poops within 12 hours, puked in her crate and then puked again this morning. I took her to the vet and they were kinda baffled. The good thing is, Gracie is not acting sick (other than the obvious). The vet took a stomach x-ray and there may or may not be a problem in there. We have another x-ray scheduled for tomorrow.

My question is this: Gracie now needs 5 pills daily and I just struggled to get her to take the first two. She wasn't impressed with peanut butter or when I powdered the pills and mixed them with a teeny bit of wet food. Anyone know any tricks? Grated cheese made into a ball might work - I'll try that next. Prayers and suggestions would be much appreciated!!!! :D

aww poor gracie...sorry she's not doing well rob :(

unfortunately i'm of no help....the times i've had to give norm meds he's taken them without probs
  • umm cheese it too oily -- she already has the runs

ask the vt for a liquid or powdered form, or open her mouth and stick it in the back of her mouth in the corner

my dog had epilepsy and i had to do that twice a day

or ask vet if she can have meat, poultry, liver
mix only the pill with a bit of meet and have her eat it

    Very cute dog.

I always go with a small piece of hotdog.

    I hope everything works out.

Lunch meat always did the trick for me. My dog was so eager to get some human food she usually wolfed it whole.

  • No tricks really work for my dog... No matter what I put the pills in, she can pick them out and spit them out. I just quickly shove the pill in the back of her mouth and hold her mouth shut and kinda massage her throat for a few seconds. It's the only way that she takes them, and really doesn't seem to mind.

One thing to maybe ask the vet about, is pancreatitis. Our dog had pretty much the same symptoms and it took a while and a couple of different tests to figure out that it was pancreatitis. It can be very harmful, but if they catch it, they can treat it pretty successfully.

Has Gracie gotten into any garbage or fatty foods lately? That can cause it.

Yep, put the pill in a piece of hot dog. Works like a charm.

i've tried it all before and i will say at least my dog would leave the pill somewhere i could find it ... i think it was more of a *fuck you buddy - think you could sneak that piece of shit drug into me!? ... i don't think so*

in any case - i forcefed one and then basically said - you could do it that way or you could take it with your food ... your choice ... he ate the pill afterwards ...

Thank you. I'm kind of in a bind with the "in a hotdog"-type idea because she is not really supposed to eat until after tomorrow's 2nd x-ray. We might have to try the "all the way into her throat" idea. One of the two pills is pretty effing big :(.

Thanks, dude. Yeah, Shelby was easy too. But I've got the double whammy of big pills and limited food to disguise them in.

I have had this problem with my little chihuahua (he's 15) and the best thing I can tell you is to put the pills in a tiny piece of bread. I hate pills for dogs, liquid is a bit easier for me...bacon, cheese and other stuff may not help her while she is fighting this bug or whatever she has!! :)

    blood tests?

    change her food

    get a diff vet

We love our vet. Since Gracie isn't acting sick, the vet wants to try the easiest route first. I'm good with that.

Oh man, I hope it's nothing like pancreatitis. I'm 99.9% sure she hasn't been "into anything" but with a puppy you can never be totally sure. We watch her like a hawk except for the occasional time she spends in her outdoor dog run. She was last in there on Saturday night.

  • I know she's on meds at this point... but if you want a no-fail diarhhea/ vomit cure for dogs, try letting her eat a substantial portion of a pumpkin pie.
I have no idea why, but it works like a charm.
Any time one of my animals is sick I always give them pumpkin & they are fine within a day.

I appreciate that - I really do :D. But, rather than home remedies and amateur diagnoses, I really just need ideas to get my girl to take her pills :D!!! I feel like my vet has set the course of action and for now we just need to follow it.

    wow

Please don't get me wrong. Anyone who has concern for my dog, is cool with me!!! I just don't think I can go back to vet tomorrow and say "Well, Doc, I heard pumpkin was good so I took Gracie off her pills and went with that route." You know what I mean?? BTW - this same vet canceled a trip and came to our house when our last dog had to be put down. The vet was crying too. I have zero doubts about his expertise/compassion.

this may sound silly but my vet (a really old dude that has been around and knows all the tricks) suggested we feed our dog (boston terrier) plain rice and cooked ground beef with a little bit of pepto bismol mixed into it...It worked like a charm...

awwww i hope little gracie grace gets better! Surf NEVER liked to take pills. I hadd to fight with him or chop them up and add it to the canned food. Dry food he would pick the pills out of there and grub everything else. He loved the canned food on occasion so i added them in there. Try that. See what happens.

That's an adorable pup. Hope she gets well soon.

I use the shove and hold method for pills. I feel most comfortable with it, 'cause I can tell right away that they've swallowed it.

I just pry their mouth open, shove the pill as far back and to the center of their throat as possible, quickly shut the jaw, hold it and say, "SWALLOW". Done. :)

I used to work at an animal hospital and for the dogs that needed pills that couldn't eat we did this:

Tools: Pill, syringe (you can buy one at the kitchen store)

    1. Fill up the syringe with water and have it close by to grab.
    2. Pry the dogs mouth open and throw the pill to the back of the throat.
    3. Close the dogs mouth as quick as possible so they can't spit it out. At this point they are going to struggle so you have act quick and don't let go of their muzzle.
    4. Take the syringe and force it under their lips towards the corner of their mouth. Squeeze all the water in the syringe into their mouth really quick.
    5. Repeat if necessary.

This does get messy, but it forces them to swallow the water and the pill at the same time. The more you do it, the less messy it is.

Good luck, they can be stubborn.

Lukin has had several bad turns with tummy bugs and has had to take meds.

The vet immediately put him on a bland diet of plain boiled rice and plain boiled chicken breasts or thighs, NO SKIN. SO in order to get the pills into him I would just get a nice chunk of boiled chicken breast put a little slice into it and stuff the pill into that then hand feed it to him. He'd eat it with no problem. Maybe that would work? :)
    NOPE!!!

Good suggestions above - one more note is, if you're giving her pills wrapped in weiner or cheese, give her a piece without the meat/cheese first. And, what works with my dogs, is if I make them think they earned it (and not a free treat which might make them suspicious). So, I make them lay down or shake a paw and then make a big excited noise and give them the treat.

    Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks to all you cool folks :D!!!!

The "disguises" don't work on Gracie. We are now going with the "cram it down her throat" approach and that gets the job done. I just hope the pills settle the poor thing's little tummy! Thanks, again.

Is she still getting sick? runs or vomiting? So long as any blood work your vet may have done showed as normal and the x-rays didn't show any signs of blockage, stop paying your vet for a bit. ;)

If she still has the runs, they will not go away if you keep feeding her (even if it's the meds). As with humans, the lower intestinal tract of a canine does 2 things very well - digests food and corrects itself. BUT....it cannot do both at the same time. As bad as you will feel when she looks at you with those puppy eyes, don't fee her for a full 24hours. Let her have water of course but no food - treats, human or otherwise (she will survive but not before your eyes get a little teary when she looks at you "why aren't you feeding me?"). Then put her back on a regular eating schedule, maybe cutting back on how much you give her the first 2 meals. Sure, you could give her a bland diet of chicken & rice but her food already is bland....may as well give her what her system is used to.

The first time I brought one of my dogs to my vet for being sick with the runs, after he gave her a brief exam and she was otherwise healthy looking, he gave me the advice above. They've both been sick like that since and and a 24hr stint with no food fixed it....with no vet bill.

Vomiting could have been the result of her being stressed over having the runs or her body's way of eliminating the last of a stomach bug she might have had. If she vomited as many times as she pooped, I would be concerned as it could mean a blockage of some sort (my oldest at a hair scrunchie one time, I'm glad she puke it up as those can get twisted around the intestine). Plus she could get dehydrated losing all that fluid.

Giving her pills...if she's no longer getting sick, crush them up good and dissolve in some water in her food. Neither of mine know the difference with that. Sometimes a little table scraps mixed in helps.

    good luck!

Poor Gracie! I hope she is getting better.

I lost my dog Pete in February at the age of 14. He had epilepsy for many years and had to take pills twice a day. I've had other dogs who had to take medications at different times. For some of them the pill at the back of the throat worked best. Pete took his pills in peanut butter just fine.

The dog I have right now, Django, won't take pills with peanut butter. But I got something from my vet called Pill Pockets. They are liver flavored. They were too expensive for me to buy them for Pete everyday for years. But when Django had to take pills for a couple of weeks he just scarfed up the Pill Pockets. I've also seen them for sale at Petsmart.
