NFL Rule Changes

Here in Palm Beach the NFL is meeting on Rule changes. Here's a few of them....
Allowing defensive players to have helmet radios like quarterbacks do, thereby eliminating another Spygate scenario.

Eliminating the 5-yard face-mask penalty.

Allowing replay on field goals.

Seeding the playoffs based on record rather than divisional winners.

Granting teams a brief grace period to contact free agents before the players can be signed.

Adopting a uniform policy to eliminate hair that flows over the player's jersey nameplate.

The last proposal was made by the Chiefs but likely will be disputed by the player's union as an issue that must be collectively bargained and not unilaterally implemented by the league.

Any new rule changes you would implement?

    Yeah, a few.

I would eliminate the force out rule along the sidelines. If a defender can get the offensive player out of bounds before both of his feet touch the ground it is a good defensive play.

I would break down Pass Interference penalties. Right now if you commit slight pass interference, the ball gets spotted where the foul was committed. I would keep this as it is for major Pass Interference calls, but add a penalty that is only 10 yards for minor Pass Interference.

I would also keep the 5 yard facemask penalty. I don't want to see 15 yard facemask penalties called every time a lineman gets his hands too high.

I'm also not a fan of changing the playoff seeding. If 6 of your 16 games are against your division, those games should mean something. Re-seeding the teams based on record before the playoffs diminishes a team's accomplishments in its division.

Get rid of the "call a timeout right before a FG attempt" bullshit. It's ridiculous! In fact, no more coaches calling timeouts.

Don't change the seeding, if your a wild card team no home game for you. You're lucky you made the playoffs.

I agree with the defensive celebrations, that is getting out of hand. Throw a flag for anything other than a high five. Same thing goes for offensive players after getting first downs. Save the celebrations for the end zone. Let players celebrate TD's as long as they aren't mocking the other team let'em do what they want.

It appears that the playoff re-seeding isn't going to happen.

According to Peter King...no team complained about the time-out/field goal rule, so the committee did not even raise that question.

Agree... College should be the same way. If a team scores on the opening OT drive, make them kick off.

Removing 5-yard face mask is dumb. Unless they will be able to call 5-yard hands to the face penalties, giving 15 yards every time a player accidentally gets his hands up is stupid.

Great ideas. Especially the force out. If you can get to the sidelines faster than the defender and catch the ball with both feet in, good for you. If he gets there as fast as you and pushes you out before your feet hit the ground, good for him.

Will the facemask automatically be 15 no matter what or will they not call a minor at all anymore?

Both teams should definately get the ball in OT. I wouldnt have punts in OT. One team kicks off, if stopped, they now have to kick off. its fair for both. in the regular season, if neither team scores, tie (you dont want to go gay like hockey and have a field goal kick off from increasing distances, but lets not go soccer or hockey silly in this mans sport....yes, that was for you NY PJ1)
in playoffs, you keep doing this until a theres a winner.

Agreed, but that's not really a rule change ;)

Sudden death doesn't really apply now if the game can end in a tie. Where's the death in that scenario? :D

I like the each team kicks off idea no matter if they score or not. But if no one scores (or each scores the same) they should play out the rest of the overtime period.

The only thing is that this could go on and on and on and on....

Maybe if neither team scores, Each get four downs from the opponents 30. no first downs. Then 20, then 10, then 5, then 1. ha ha. This will never happen in a million, but why not throw it out there. It makes you go endzone from 30 yards out if you want a TD (remember, no first downs), and if you dont get close enough, its a long enough field goal to make it interesting. Penalties and sacks can make the FG even longer.

A INT or fumble returned for a touch down ON THE FIRST SET OF DOWNS FROM THE 30 would not count as a TD but rather a change of possession (the other team would simply come out and kneel on the ball four times, and the only team penalized would be the first team to have the ball. not many teams would be throwing). After that, int TD's or fumble recoveries for a TD = game over.

Way too much detail, but the current OT rules just suck. Bad.
