I just need to vent about stupid people in my family!

My aunt, uncle and 17 year old cousin from TEXAS came to Indiana to visit for the July 4th Holiday.

Of course I could not help but to talk politics with them, considering they are from TEXAS!

They KNOW NOTHING, could not discuss the war with me, had no facts about the devastion anywhere in the world, actually I would use the phrase "heads buried in the sand" to describe them. Not because they did not agree with me, but because they really didn't even know what I was talking about.

But, they know one thing for sure, they are voting for Mcain, Why? Well because he's pro life, and Obama is not. They are catholic's, their choice for president makes as much sense as being able to go commit a sin and then set in a box and be forgiven!

My 17 year old cousin actually used the words, "Obama scares me!" But could not tell me specifically why he scares her, just things she's heard.

Does this make anyone else's blood boil, like it did mine?

I am supposed to go to their house for Thanksgiving, but since I am a vegetarian and they are serving turkey, I think I am going to stay home simply because I believe in pro life for the turkeys!

This sounds as stupid, as voting for a president who believes in staying in a war, killing people. But is pro-life???????? :(

Now, you can slam me all you want, but I just needed to vent and I couldn't talk to anyone in my family about how much this bothers me!

im prolife for myself but, i also am prochoice for other people when it only comes down to rape or insest. i think its murder of the fetus. a baby is growing inside of u what a beautiful thing why kill it but, for some things i do agree . you have to be in the situation to know. also if im saying if i got pregnant at age 17 or so i would have the baby and give it up for adoption. alot of people want kids why not adopt instead of killing it. i dont think i could ever live with myself if i ever had one. i believe more in adoption than abortion. i am catholic but, i pray at home and i dont go to church and i love all differnet religions. ive been to non denomanational church and i liked it better then catholic and i also like the hara krishna temple. people have so many opinions and beliefs and i would never preach to anyone. all i know i hope obama brings up our economy because bush surely brought it down. bush is horrible i dont care what any1 thinks. what good stuff has he done? people say he is trying and i think hes a murder. look at all the people hes killing then people say look at what happened on sept 11 they killed us but, why is it right?? war is stupid!bring home the troops because so many are getting killed. its not fair!i hope 2009 brings us happiness :-)

This is why I have decided not to discuss politics with family or coworkers anymore. There are far too many uninformed voters out there. I just don't have the patience or time to be the one to inform them. Blind faith is a terrifying thing.

first of all don't think they were ignorant because they were from Texas,i have made that mistake in the past only to find some of the most informed people i ever met were from Austin(plus Bush is really from Ct not TX)

some people just don't have a clue! pro-lifers voting for Bush/Cheney!! fucking ridiculous!! that's like a vegetarian voting pro-steak :D

educating people with the truth is the only way to combat ignorance! it's just some times you will come across people who are incapable of grasping the truth no matter what.they are lost and you shouldn't waste time/energy on these people.

Pro Life doesn't mean you're against killing. It means you're against Abortion. So, you can be pro life and still support the war in Iraq (which many Americans - even outside of the south - do). Sounds like them ignorant Texans aren't the only ones that need to read a newspaper once in a while...
I smile, but who am I kidding...
  • I've learned this the hard way, but discussing politics and religion is (99 percent of the time) a bad idea. Save yourself many evenings of frustration by not talking politics with people that will never change their minds anyway no matter how sound you think your position might be.

Pro-life means just that PRO LIFE,just because hypocritical scumbag politicians flip flop and try to make it two separate things IT'S NOT!!!

"yeah I'm against killing un-born babies..but soon as they are born lets drop a bomb on them!!" It don't work that way, maybe in your/their mind but not in reality.

So by your own definition of reality, pro choice liberals are more closely aligned with the war in Iraq than conservatives who are against abortion? I'm afraid the lines are blurred, and not just by politicians. It's not a black-and-white world and anyone who thinks it is needs some enlightenment. Labels and generalizations only prove that you have no idea how complex these arguments actually are...

the abortion issue is a stupid thing to base political votes on. it's a personal, religious choice and shouldn't even be an issue in the public sphere.

I can't even believe it's still an issue. it was made legal over 30 years ago. GET OVER IT. It's here, and how has society become any worse for it? In fact, I forget where I read it-it may have been that book freakonomics- some people have tied the decrease in crime in the united states to the legalization of abortion and it honestly makes sense.

I don't understand "prolifers" at all- who wants a bunch of unwanted kids running around? they're the exact same people who are all up and arms about "welfare mothers." Sure, have your cake and eat it too people. (same as being pro-war and pro-life- total oxymoron).

That is because Austin is the only blue part of the state. I talked to a guy from Austin after the two Mansfield shows, he told me so.

Yeah unfortunately Bush is from my state, don't remind me.
    32 shows and counting...

Really? Do you know me or something? Probably not because if you did you would know that it is my job to raise money (lots of it) to shape strong environmental policies on federal and state levels for global warming, wildlife, land, water, etc. Just because I don't feel the need to bore people with my politics at family picnics doesn't mean that I am not engaged or doing something to make the world a better place. Unlike some others I realize that bashing people over the head with my views really makes no difference in the grand scheme of things.

What cracks me up about picking someone solely on this issue, is that it hasn't changed... Pro life people have been in the whitehouse A LOT in the past 30 years, but not one of them has changed anything... I understand that people have that position, but don't they get tired of being let down by nothing ever changing?

Back to the OP, I do hate discussing politics with people that have no idea, but are so stubborn in their thinking. If you disagree with me on issues/candidates, that is completely fine, and often times makes for better discussion, but it's the people that have NO IDEA what they are talking about, or why they support or hate a party/candidate that just makes me want to smack them.

Half joking, but there really should be some sort of test you have to take before you can vote.

yes, however, the ARGUMENT for prolife is that it's not ok to kill another "human." So, according to people who are against abortion but ok with the war, it is wrong to kill a few American cells that have just started to develop in a uterus, but it's ok to kill a whole Iraqi person (and whole american soldiers????).

I truly believe that these people cannot possibly be of the belief that it's wrong to kill another another person purely by reason of this hypocrisy. I really think they use that reasoning to mask the idea that they are really against abortion because they think people should be punished for having sex.

sometimes you can't help it. my aunt is one of these ignorant people who loves to pick political fights with me. I pretty much ignor her, but she loves to sit there and call me "a liberal" as if it's some kind of insult.

also, have you ever noticed that people who are against abortion also tend to be

    1) against birth control
    2) all for fertility treatments.

    makes no sense!

I have those kinds of people in my life too. They obviously just want to get you stirred up. I get sucked into that crap too sometimes, but I avoid it at all costs these days. What happens is you end up spending the whole night talking about politics with one person and everyone else is having fun. F THAT !

You're just playing a semantics game with the term pro-life! To clarify, use anti-abortion, and pro-abortion (or pro-baby murder) instead. Babies never attacked the WTC, so equating them to terrorists in Iraq or Afghanistan doesn't work. Why don't people understand that there are people on this planet that want to kill Americans? We can either fight them here, or fight them "over there."

well if you believe in the bullshit Gov story about 9-11 you'd know the alleged hijackers were from Saudi Arabia not Iraq or Afgahnistan

seeing as the people you are referring are in Washington DC not the middle east that would be "over here".
but i doubt you believe OR understand that.

I agree on principal. But you can be against abortion and think it's ok to kill in the name of defending America (even if it means innocent civilians are killed). So, it's not enough to say you're a bad pro lifer if you support the war in Iraq - maybe politicians and the press need to make a better distinction between prolife and just anti-abortion. I guess my point was that abortion, as with most issues, are much deeper than labels and generalizations lead on...

I am the only conservative in a very hippie/liberal restaurant. I cannot discuss politics with anyone I work with because they are the most closed-minded/judgemental people I have ever met in my entire life.

Anytime a political conversation comes up, I leave the room. They don't know I'm not one of them. The other day they were talking about the NRA, the constitution and the right to bear arms and I overheard one say, "Charleton Heston - when he died- I believe he needed to." Are you kidding me???
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.
