Yep! I think he was paid a small amount for the film but demanded a percentage of the profits and the merchandising. Smart!!!!

It doesn't matter whether it's a good movie or not. Millions of people will pay LOTS of money just to see Johnny Depp as Captian Jack once again. The movie itself is trivial.

oh I know it will make a lot of money regardless. I just feel that if he's going to accept that much money up front, he should really make sure that it's going to be as good as it can possibly be. don't start filming it until the script is perfect, etc.. he has the power to make sure it doesn't turn out like the 3rd one.
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.

the last one was horrible, hopefully the writing is better for the 4th
Are you trying to tell me the first two were better? They were all shitty movies with no script, but fun to watch. I thought the first one was the funniest and I really liked the atmosphere of the third one..

The first one was great, the 2nd and 3rd were a complete waste of movie-time.

i wouldn't exactly say its great (#1), its a lot of fun. they are all carried by strong acting, actually I think what sunk the 2nd and 3rd one was that they filmed together so they had to rush to meet self imposed deadlines with the special effects which made them focus less on more important things. I love the action sequences in all of them, i love the feel of the third one and the silliness/campiness of the second.

You'd think 60 million would be a nice round number. Don't know how they got to 61 million. Depp probably had his agent playing hardball to get one of our finest actors to take a payday to reprise a role in a very dull franchise like Pirates.
Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

the first one was the best, it was refreshing to see a fun movie like that!

the following two were rehashes of the first, going down in quality from the 2nd to the 3rd. the 3rd one was most dismal....you know a movie sucks when you wish everybody would just die so it'd end and you can go home lol

    this is totally obscene.

Normally I would agree. But I would pay $61 million to buy Johnny Depp. :D

I still can't tell the difference between the three.. please tell me how the script of the first was great? What made it the Godfather, Citizen Kane or the Star Wars when compared to the other two scripts?

Face it dude, they all sucked script wise.. Watching them all on blu-ray reminds me how stupid/fun they are.. You may connect with the first movie more, but it offers no more creativeness then the second or third..

DONT GET ME STARTED! i saw a preview for indy 4 coming out on video and went off!

whats next? "back to the future 4: the search for a cure for parkinson's"

the only addition lately that has been remotely enjoyable was the last die hard... and even that got to be a little too much...

They did all suck script wise, but the first was new and was entertaining (and had the better script of the three, if you ask me). The last two felt like they were just killing time, the first one was at least enjoyable.

He's come along way from 21 Jump Street. I think Richard Grieco is calling him for a loan.
Grieco was the only one who got a spin off form 21 Jump Street, remember "Booker"...so he must be the most successful cast member. ;)

Tim Burton has been retained by Disney to possibly direct the 4th Pirates movie....

One of Cinema Blend’s more reliable insiders says that Tim Burton could be directing ''Pirates of the Caribbean 4''.

Go with it… it doesn’t sound that far-fetched – not since Burton and star Johnny Depp are pretty much tied at the hip. And not since Disney’s currently working with the famed filmmaker on “Alice in Wonderland” – which’ll no doubt be one of their big hits of the next twelve months.

Still, there’s no deal yet, but apparently if Gore Verbinski decides he’s had enough of swashbuckling Jack Sparrow, Burton is waiting in the wings. Hey, maybe they’ll just bypass Verbinski and go straight to Burton? I know I would. I for one would love to see a Burton-helmed “Pirates” film. Might just breathe new life into the tired franchise. The last two installments were sleepy…. Almost overkill.

Casting-wise, Geoffrey Rush is said to be rejoining Depp for the new flick (no word on Keira or Orlando – chances are they’re both out) and Disney are on the hunt for a name to play Sparrow’s brother in the film. Sascha Baron Cohen and Russell Brand (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) are said to be atop of the wish list. And, of course, if Burton ends up directing it’s a sure-thing that Helena Bonham-Carter is going to be in there somewhere too.

Let’s wait and see how this one pans out…
