I think Alive is the obvious choice and would work. But Crown of Thorns would be so cool as a closer and would work with the house lights on too, and we could end with a mike solo just like the 06 san diego show version. Even as cool as I think that would be nothing beats yellow ledbetter
"Change don't come at once, it's a wave, building before it breaks"
And he still gives his love, he just gives it away, The love he receives is the love that is saved, And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky, A human being that was given to fly
I do enjoy Yellow Ledbetter as the closer, but if anything were to replace it, I would really like to hear All Those Yesterdays.
That being said, I don't know if I like the idea of there being a closer at all. I'm not a big fan of the way concerts work these days with there being scheduled encores. An encore should not be something that is planned for every show, but should be impromptu and in response to overwhelming crowd appreciation. It seems that every band routinely plays -at least- one encore at every show, and people have come to expect it. Having a regular closing song takes away the spontenaity from encores and the end of a show.
I have also started going to the theatre from time to time, and am getting annoyed with the almost routine standing ovations that people give...they should be reserved for those really special performances...I guess that's another story though.
I do love hearing yellow ledbetter with the house lights on at the end of every show, but would love it if there was a true encore where people kept cheering after the show was over and demanded another song.
I've thought about this a lot, and I have to agree with All Those Yesterdays. It's rarely played live at all, but I think it could create that cathartic experience that Ledbetter does. At that point, after two and a half hours of music, I don't even need to see another great performance (Ed's voice is usually in pretty rough shape anyways). I just need something to help bring me down from that euphoric state and back to real life.
ALIVE!!! get song to end the show. You leave pumped up and wanting more.

I've seen them twice when they didn't play Yellow Ledbetter to close, and it just seemed weird, like the show wasn't really over, so I'd still vote for YL, its the only true closer IMHO

I LOVE Oceans, but im not sure about it being a closer...id love to see the band open with it!!!
I'll definitely vote for Indifference and Alive...maybe Porch or Love Reign O're Me as well.

Technically, they use all of these songs to close sets. As for ending with a non-traditional song, it would have to be a less-frequently played song like Parting Ways to fit the bill. I wouldn't be a fan of ending a show with a popular song like Porch, Alive, or Even Flow.

I was listening to Lost Dogs in my car on the way to work this morning and thought what a great closer Leaving Here would be - apart from the obvious connection with the title, it would be a real 'belter' of a song to finish on

after hearing Hard to Imagine from the Vic I think that would be an excellent closer. It's a great sing along and gives Mike a chance to do a nice mellow solo like in YL.
I am Jack, The Pumpkin King!
The eyes are the groin of the head.
Baba O'Riley
RitFW x 4 as closer, 6x all together
Alive
Indifference
Yellow Ledbetter 2x
I liked YLB and Baba as closers, RitFW is a good pre-closer to YLB but Alive left me wanting more, and I can't stand Ben Harper doing Indifference (Vic).
I think they should stick with YLB and throw the two Who covers in there every once in a while Baba and Love Reign O'er Me. Rockin' in the Free World should be used before anyone of those songs.
out of 40 shows i think yellow has closed more than half the time. i am so tired of hearing this song close out the night!
i'm thinking as a new closer "release" would be perfect. everyone knows the words inside and out.
another great closer would be porch. pj closed with this a lot pre 94.
by the way, alive closed out the show on 9/11/98 with ed hanging from his mic cord which was attached to the top of the stage. i was there witnessing it front row.
Yellow Ledbetter (x13)
Baba O'Riley
Alive (x2)
Rockin' In The Free World (x2)
Indifference
I'd like to point out though that during a lot of those shows that have closed w/ Ledbetter they had played Baba O'Riley or Rockin' In The Free World right before hand, which I think is kind of pointless, IMO, there is no need to close with Yellow Ledbetter if they had played Rockin' In The Free World, Baba O'Riley, Alive, Fuckin' Up, Indifference right before it... I'd rather see them fill the show w/ some other songs that don't get played as often.
I like hearing YL but I think they should put it on the same level as the other closers... make it rare for a change... play it every 4-5 shows and make us want to hear it again.

I vote for Yellow Ledbetter to be second last at MSG, followed immediately by Immortality to send us home

I still have yet to see Fuckin' Up live though.
Hell yeah!
The best closer I have seen was Indifference. The crowd we singing and clapping so loud, it almost drowned Ed out.
