  • that list is lame. so many idiots voted, case in point, dark knight is not the 3rd best movie of all time. also because 300, 000 more people voted for Shawshank Redmpetion then North by Northwest its 25 spots higher??? FLAWED. If those 300,000 people had all seen North by Northwest they would know its a far superior movie.
I totally agree with you here (on the list is lame point). Imdb is a pile of shite generally anyway, although I wouldn't agree that North by Northwest is a far superior movie to Shawshank. Both are brilliant movies in their own right, but I don't think they are really comparable. Also, I think Hitchcock has done better than N x NW.
Anyway, some of my votes - ie some of my favourite movies:

    The Usual Suspects
    Blade Runner
    On The Waterfront
    Some Like it Hot
    Aliens
    The Life of Brian
    Blazing saddles
    Terminator 2
    2001: A Space Odyssey
    Dial M for Murder
I'll Ride The Wave Where It Takes Me

Shawshank is great but NXNW is far superior, who else but hitchcock could make a desert scene in broad daylight that tense, while not his best movie, it is my fav of his. He has done better though obviously, Rear Window and Veritgo immediately come to mind.

i suppose...i wasn't keen on seeing the first one for a long time because i'm not usually into fantasy-type movies, but finally relented. it's a solid, timeless story and visually gorgeous.

It truly is. The cinematography in that movie is top notch. That alone makes it a great movie.

not only that but the jumps from huge sprawling CGI shots to like handheld camera battle scenes, especially in the helms deep and minis tirith battle scenes are amazingly well done. you dont even notice the jumps.

True. He did do a fantastic job with that movie. One of my favorite secenes, camera shot wise was when Faramir and his men where returning to Minas Tirith after Gandalf saved them from the Nazgul. The camera pans and follows them on the field from a distance and all you can hear is the wind and a faint galloping of horses. Amazing scene beautifully shot.
