Soccer is similar to me as NASCAR is to you. I just don't get it nor am I interested in investing any more time trying to figure it out. It's just not that exciting to me.

Soccer and NASCAR ARE the same thing to me.
"Pele passes it to Pele 2 over to Pele!" "Come see low scores, and ties!!!"
That I've watched but don't understand. I do respect that sport though. Those cars are damn near jet fighter.
A big part is the technology in the cars
the locales-truly a world championship
the tracks-some of the grandstands are spectacular
the strategy-more
We are talking about ferraris, BMW and mercedes top of the line race cars.
There is aerospace grade technology (NASA) grade, and then there is F1 grade, a step above.
Amazing stuff.
I will say that the lack of passing can make it a bit boring at times
Funny how drivers are called rednecks when drivers like Ryan Newman have mechanical engineering degrees from Purdue. Also, a lot of the "necks" that build the cars also have engineering degrees.
if i want to see a bunch of monte carlos racin around i just go up to illinois/wisconsin border. i heard once that watching a whole nascar race sober will kill three million brain cells, and those don't come back.
HOLY shit. this thread is really just a big ol' ball of ignorance.
first of all. doesn't count for WHAT? what are the qualifiers? did you not grow up watching Nascar, therefore it doesn't "count" to YOU?? many people enjoy the sport. It IS a sport, and it IS fascinating.
the concept that it's all jug-band style trashy people that are ignorant is itself IGNORANT and stereotypical. Only "right wingers' like Nascar?
every Nascar fan lives in a trailer? bullshit.
would NFL "count"?? isnt the fanbase just a bunch of former fratties getting drunk and watching men with oversized pituitaries battle it out?
please.
I suppose ALL pearl Jam fans believe and act in the same fashion...do they "count" as a musical interest?? "oh grunge heads" ?!?
by the way, the demographics of the fanbase for Nascar has changed a LOT over the years. get a clue about something before you start a thread trashing it.
IF YOU WANT A PLATE OF MY BEEF SWELLINGTON, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY THE COVERCHARGE.
My interest in NASCAR has certainly waned since Dale Sr.'s death, but this little story might give you an idea of just how much it does matter....or count as the OP put it
I don't believe it would be a huge leap to say, with 99.9% certainty, that NASCAR matters a lot more than the NHL
December 2005
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR announced its new 2007 television contracts on Wednesday, deals which solidify its position as the No. 2 television sport behind National Football League games.
Under the new eight-year agreements, NASCAR races will be broadcast on a combination of networks that includes Fox, Speed, Turner's TNT, and ABC/ESPN beginning in 2007, according to NASCAR.com.
Notably absent from the new deal was NBC. The Wall Street Journal reported that NBC has lost money on its current NASCAR contract and now has "the high cost of NFL on Sunday nights."
The Journal said the new contracts are valued at about $4.5 billion or $560 million a year, up from current deals totaling $2.4 billion over six years or $400 million a year.
What this means to you: Coming soon to a lot of stations near you! NASCAR continues to rev up its clout among advertisers and entertainment outlets, positioning itself for even greater growth.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

Yep, that's right. I've been to 15 of them. So, I've lost......15 x 3......hmmmm, that's tough. Wait, what were we talking about again?

NASCAR fans are a sensitive lot. I had y'all pegged as being tougher than that...
I personally think the potential for crackers to burst into flames has to be worth something.

Hemingway was a trophy hunter and I can't even begin to imagine a more cowardly past time. That being said, I'm a fan of his writing style. And weird that he wouldn't mention boxing seeing as how he was a boxer and that is way more of a real sport than any he mentioned.

As a former amateur boxer, I don't know the answer to your valid question but I do have to agree with your assessment ..

Boxing is awesome. I admire any sport where you are willing to pit yourself against another human in combat. No tools, no machines, no balls, no end zones, just 1 on 1. To me, that is real competition.

The defensiveness might come from the fact that people dog on the sport calling a bunch of necks going in circles and they really have no idea what they're talking about. To be critical of anything that people enjoy when the party that is doing the criticizing doesn't know anything about it might cause some defensiveness.
I only comment on it becasue there are a lot of misconceptions about the sport and the people that enjoy it.
Like I said, I'd rather tailgate with these people anytime than go to a Pats-Dolphins game to get verbally harrased just because I root for the Dolphins and I live in NE. At least I won't threatened with violence and have shit thrown at me.
oy, a cracker bursting into flames?!?! wow, that kinda sucks...

I'm gonna watch Richmond this weekend...
Love me some short track racing....I really need to find someone new to root for cos after Rusty retired, rooting against Gordon just wasn't as much fun and didn't keep my interest :(..

I enjoy how NASCAR fans love to tell you how popular it is. Like how 150,000 go every week which is all well and good but it is one event once a week. Baseball as boring as it may be draws over 300,000 EVERY night during the season across the country for the major leagues (if every team is playing thats 16 games average around 20,000 per game). 150,000 once a week really isn't all that great, hell the NHL draws even more than that on a full schedule night. just saying...

right, but that number doesnt count the amount of people watching at home...if that is the basis for what you are talking about...popularity...
as for the sport itself, like with many things it's subjective...I could argue about art styles, music tastes, favorite foods, whatever - and there are bound to be some who agree and some who disagree...
I react towards people making stereotypical claims about the "type" of people that like a particular thing in a disparaging manner...
for example, the thread starter later implies superiority based on their dislike/disdain for Nascar itself.
