Love story killing the plot

Does anyone have a problem when a stupid love story is thrown into a novel or movie that could have seemingly survived otherwise?
I ask because I am reading For Whom The Bell Tolls and there is this reeaalllllyyy romantic love relationship...I mean...real romantic. I am eating it up. I wonder if anyone would be annoyed seeing as it is a 'war' novel of sorts, even though Hemingway fully acknowledges it is also a love story.

Like Star Wars....ruined with the whole Padma/Darth relationship. I know it was necessary, but a bit too much.

I can't think of any other examples at the moment, but sometimes I just want the love line in the story to disappear.

Padme was hot. She was bound to hook up with someone. George Lucas is kinky that way. Like Leia and Han Solo.

But yes I see what you mean.
I love to turn you on

Glad you asked Trixie...yes, it is annoying.
Give me action or violence once in a while, minus the sappy sub-plot.
I will use Fight Club as an example.....we knew there was a sub-plot, albeit sex and raunch, not love. But it worked and didn't suffocate the plot.

I can almost bet a million dollars mookie will come on here and talk about Sam and Alice ruining the Brady Bunch. :p

Ruining?!? Are you out of your mind?!?! Sam and Alice along with Mel and Vera on Alice were the two reasons for me discovering myself back in the summer of '83!

How about this one....."Pearl Harbor" the big-budget movie???? Great war movie if you cut off about an hour and a half of the romance stuff.

alrighty then...how about in 'What About Bob' when you kind of thought Dr. Leo Marvin's wife thought he lost his marbles and then you thought she'd hook up with Bob...but she never did. That could've gone either way.
I love to turn you on

Are you going crazy from lack of booze??? Ignore? You're talking ignore here???

I just know some people get a kick out of me talking to myself and I wanted to get the ball rolling in case no one agreed with me. :)
    I don't remember Bob.

I can't stand when they add some love plot to movies like Die Hard. Wasn't there some love plot in the last one??? He has time to be falling in love???

I have no problem with love stories if they seem organic and natural...but sometimes it feels like they are just thrown in to add another dimension to the story. I really don't like that.

Bite your tongue woman! ;) To answer your original question, I only read non-fiction so any love stories involved are unavoidable. As to t.v. I could do with a little less of the Jim/Pam aspect of The Office.

That's what I am talking about girl. When they don't belong.
There is no reason for Bruce Willis' character to be falling in love in Die Hard.
    No reason.

    No reason.

You've got to admit that the chemistry between him and Samuel L. Jackson was something special!

Sometimes I think they just do it to broaden the appeal! Like...so the girlfriend that gets dragged along to the shitty action movie has something to entertain her...lol.

If the casting director does the job properly, the gf should have plenty to look at. :p

    I hate leo.

I think he is the most unconvincing movie star-it seemed fake, totally fake
and sure, they were never scared-yeah right

I really didn't like Titanic, but, I think the love story was really important to the movie. There had to be a reason that you personally identified with the tragedy of the sinking ship, and by making you care about the Jack and Rose (those where their names, right?) love story, they achieved that.

I find it to be the characters he plays..you know, them being offbeat, eccentic dudes like in Gilbert Grape, the Aviator and Gangs. He just takes on really good roles, I think. Basketball Diaries.

alrighty then...thought you were going schizophrenic on me...don't tread on die hard...it's my altime favorite movie! :D

star wars...love story to make annakin more human before he turns into a killing machine.
blood diamond...danny needs to appear to be more human with this love reference (maddy) so he can forget about the diamond and save solomon.

love stories are an easy way to bring a human element into theatre/movies. nudity helps too.

and yes, lack of booze contributes to everything...water in that smitticks glass just ain't cuttin it...but i fell hard last weekend, hence the pm...
I love to turn you on

Yes, the pm...:o what did it say again?? :o Not here....

I understand why they are there, but they are obstructions in the plot.

good roles yes, but very unconvincing performances

gilbert grape was a good performance, but man that movie is too painful to watch

Basketball diaries was good too, but, after that its the same dude on the beach, on the boat, in the plane, fighting the gang

he picks good roles, but he has no range.

No idea why he is mentioned in the same breath as penn, depp, lewis, fiennes, bardem, clooney, and even pitt-real actors of our time.

Its TOO important, thats the point

shouldve been a disaster movie a la the 1970s when they made the theater shake

come to think of it, it would have been better if they could have found a way to get George Kennedy in there somewher
