well I do have a condition that makes me sweat much more than average and makes my extremities swell up and bloat so I am biased to the cold. but it's always struck me as odd that people consider winter to be so evil in modern america where it's all still pretty easy...I mean I dislike hot weather, but I don't find myself praying for winter the way most people pray for summer. plus, winter is easier to deal with- you put on a warm coat, hat, gloves, boots, etc and you're fine (I've always thought that if you're cold, you're not wearing the proper clothing). I mean especially around here (it's probably worse in REALLY cold places). it barely got into single digits at all this winter- by usual standards it was fairly warm. in summer, there's not much you can do to avoid the heat when you're outside.
The majority of people almost everywhere that experiences both would prefer summer to winter.

I dunno, I like them both equally. Problem is Irish weather.. in the summer, all the nice weather seems to be during the week, weekend it's just rainy and miserable... so... while I suffer in the heat on the way to and from work, I don't get to enjoy it by simply sitting out in it :( . BUT, leaving the weather out of it, I much prefer the activities that seem to arise in the summer... like simply sitting in a beer garden all day and there are constant BBQ invites... people seem to rediscover their sociable side.

Hey, I think Nova Scotia and Ireland might be the same place!!!
yes but WHY is what I want to know. what is so great about summer and so bad about winter?
Most people like being outside without having to dress like an eskimo?
Green leaves are more pleasing than bare branches?
Spring has sprung, the grass has rise, I wonder where the birdies is?
No evil, oil-loving neanderthal is scraping their car windows every morning and afternoon?
No one has to wait for the car to warm up to be comfortable?
This really shouldn't be an argumentative concept. Generally most people like warm better than cold.
Why do you care what everyone else likes summer?
The main good thing about when there's not snow is that it is easier to drive places. I don't like driving in snowstorms and you get feeling trapped. If you want to see people being negative about summer, just turn on the TV in Houston in summer. 'Woo - another hot one folks - stay indoors or in the shade etc.' I guess people just get tired of being cold though - its kind of nice to step outside without needing a jacket.

I don't really "care" so to speak, I just want to know why and if they are just jumping on the band wagon or whatever.
one thing that does get to me about everyone else liking summer, is that often I have to pretend to too. If someone says "hey this is great weather we're having!" it makes for an awkward situation if I reply "nah, it's too warm for me." so I have to go along. and actually that makes me wonder if other people don't feel the same.
I like that stuff you mention about summer too- I love to be outside. which is why I don't really like summer...if that makes sense. because then it's too hot to be outside when you want to be. it would be nice if we had all those things you list but it never went above like 65. I can't run outside in the summer. I hate that.
This is the top of my scale for warm weather. I hate heat. It has been so nice recently, but as usual we get no spring in Boston. Straight from winter to sweat filled days and nights.
I am with GTD the 60's is perfect, I dread happy weathermen on TV, and I like the cold better than August.

It's not as if there aren't people who prefer cold over warm, so I don't know why you'd think all conversations get 'awkward' if you disagree with someone. See rearviewmirror above for example.
I thought you didn't like the snow because you are afraid you are going to slip.
I think the thing you are complaining about is "muggy" weather. not 80 degree weather.
and that is my 2 cents.
oh no I LOVE snow (maybe because I was born in an enormous blizzard, who knows?) I do very much dislike walking on ice-I walk like an old woman. but it's not even to make me not like winter/snow.

haha thank you, someone else dreads the happy weathermen! I mean really, why are we any better off at 80 than 60s? how is that an improvement? seems like the opposite to me. If I were the weatherman I'd say "bad news folks, the perfect spring weather is on it's way out and a unseasonable warm front is moving in, probably because of a century of incessant burning of fossil fuels. but we'll have no choice to burn them tomorrow, crank up those ACs and bring a change of clothes!"

you wouldn't think so, but they do. people have no idea how to respond!
I love this weather! I love the heat...hate the cold. I'm not as fond of humidity...but I would rather take a hot humid day over a cold bitter day anytime. I rarely use AC - I hate it! I would much rather have the windows open. Sometimes the heat can feel uncomfortable...but it never feels painful the way the cold does to me. I was definitely born in the wrong climate!

for it to be 80 degrees in April, in Boston. I'm not ready to sweat yet!!!! Seriously we had like 3 days of spring and now it's summer already. I haaaate sweating. My clothes were all wet before I even got to the office today.
also, I would like to know why, when you watch the weather report on the local news, they are *always* happier the warmer it is. that makes absolutely zero sense to me. they act like it's a given that everyone on earth loves the heat and hates the cold. I've never understood that. I used to get so mad at the TV when I was a kid. last night they were like "maybe you can take a long lunch tomorrow and get out and enjoy the good weather." Why? so you can be soaked for the rest of the afternoon? I took long lunches last week when it was in the low 60s--perfect weather. sunny, nice breeze, not much sweating. when the forecast says 80, it says to me "time to head indoors!"
Fuck, 80 degrees and dry here? I'll take it. The weather has been absolutely gorgeous. You must really hate the 90 degree, humid summers here if you hate this already.

60s is *IDEAL* weather imho.
my hsuband and i were just discussing this last night and realize....hot weather is tolerable if you have NOTHING to do. as long as i can wear whatever, sit my ass in the shade on the back porch with a COLD drink filled with ICE...it's all good. it's mostly b/c i actually have to function most of the time, get dressed, go to work, be presentable...that it sucks. i'd far rather the cold if i must choose from extremes...but really....give me fantastic, temperate spring and autumn weather and i am in heaven.
i'....give me fantastic, temperate spring and autumn weather and i am in heaven.
yeah and that is the problem RVM and I am describing- it goes from cold to hot around here with just a few days in between! the summers down south were terrible, but I did really like how there was "spring" from about feb to april.
I like low to mid 70s. That, to me, is perfection... Right now it's like 76 here, and I have all the windows open and there is a nice breeze and I am perfectly comfortable. And then it'll still be perfect to go outside after naptime and watch the kiddo push her bubble mower back and forth on the driveway for an hour.
It's not as if there aren't people who prefer cold over warm, so I don't know why you'd think all conversations get 'awkward' if you disagree with someone. See rearviewmirror above for example.
I don't get it either... if I'm suffering in the heat which everyone is enjoying and I say 'it's too hot for me' I've never had one of those awkward moments where everyone looks at me like I'm a freak... I'm simply stating a fact that, while it might be nice for them, for me it's too hot... so there really is no opening for them to judge me at all
And GTD you said you wanna know why... everyone gave you several great reasons... the social aspect, not having to wear a jacket, flowers everywhere... most things are just prettier in the summer!

I agree completely... it would be perfect if it were say 10degrees c (dunno in f) Monday to Friday 7-12 and 2-6 and the rest say about 25 when I can sit out the back with some beer and a book and just enjoy it.
