  • I went to the Culinary Institute there for 5 weeks last year (withdrew since I hated it there) and it's a beautiful place to be. Hyde Park is a nice little place to live and Poughkeepsie isn't too bad either.

I live about 40 minutes away in Hudson, NY

I love Hyde Park and pretty much all of Dutchess County for that matter... check out the Eveready Diner for some good eats if you're ever there.

EDIT: I see you are already from Albany. Hudson (where I live) is pretty much equidistant between Albany and Poughkeepsie.

What will you be doing at the DOT? I worked for them for one year back in 1999, then learned just how much more the private sector pays. One thing I will say about the DOT, if you want a pretty nice career, somewhat decent pay, and great benefits, along with being home every night, the DOT is the place.

    understatement of the year....

in my office, I'm the only person under 30 and it's a computer programming job...however, most are getting ready to retire, so hopefully I can climb the ladder a little higher :)

Yeah, the benefits and not having bad hours is what keeps me there. For my area, the difference in pay isn't big enough for me to sacrifice those things for a "better" job. But, that's probably because Columbia, SC isn't that big of a hotbed for computer programming....

Poughkeepsie is my hometown. The city itself is on the small(ish) side, but the surrounding areas are great. You should have no problem finding stuff that interests you and meeting new people. To meet some new people, hit up Shadows, Mahoneys, Mad Hatter, etc.

If you have any more questions, PM me. I could practically be a fucking tour guide for that place.

Perhaps you will be able to explain to me in a few months how the fuck someone who does not have easy pass is supposed to pay the toll on the Triborough bridge and then cross 7 lanes of hasty EZpass users in the span of 30 yards to take the Randalls' Island exit without killing their soccer bound family?

Anyway, I applied for a job in Poughkeepsie a couple of months ago. I didn't get it unfortunately. Apparently it's beautiful, and it's a great college town. Also, NYC is only 90 minutes away so you don't have to worry about hotels for MSG in June :)
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

Transportation Analyst in the interview the details of the position were very vague, the private sector does pay better. Although, I am going to start out with 13 days vacation right away, which is more than enough to tgo oon tour this summer

i have a few friends at marist college and from what i saw, it is a beautiful place aside from the downtown which i gathered to be quite shitty. there are some really nice parts and the mid-hudson bridge (i think its called) is gorgeous at night because you can see all of the lights in the city and i dont know, i just thought it was really nice. good luck with everything!

On a related note... stay away from girls that go to Marist! It's got the highest STD percentages of the country (or so I hear.)

Don't worry, you still have Vassar if your into the artsy types, Dutchess Community College if your into the less than genius types, and the Cullinary Institute of America if your into the type that will enjoy cooking you dinner every night. SUNY New Paltz and Mount Saint Mary's aren't very far either.

As did Anne Hathaway and Tom Hank's daughter.

BTW, I can't believe a thread about Poughkeepsie is 3 pages long. Crazy shit...

A thread like this just shows how much more wilder the fan base of the North East is. I think I've heard more about Poughkeepsie than Columbia, SC, and PJ is playing a show there!!!!
