I have finally purged my computer of Norton system works in favor of Avira...wow. My computer starts up faster, actaully shuts down without memory errors, and is still virus free.

Bye bye system hog norton

    welcome to 2003 haha

Toss Norton in the trash next to Mcrappee antivirus.
I was a big fan of AVG antivirus for the past few years but now it seems to be going the way of all the other bigger a-v's.

    nod32, Avira, and Avast FTW

I have solved at least a handfull of customers PC's just by getting rid of Norton AV

    so what DO you reccommend?
i am very curious. my husband is the resident *computer expert* in our home, and he really does know what he's doing. however, as it is not his profession...we do get all new reccommendations from friends and such. i had turned him onto mozilla from reading about it here. :) he loves it! he has complained about what a hog norton is....so if not this avira, what else? where does one get avira? or any other program reccommended? open to any/all suggestions, and appreciate links and/or just being told where one may find em. preferably free :D...but low-cost is good too. :p
    Stay with me...

NOD32 works really well. I finished switching our company over last year and we've had a great experience (aka no viruses). I've switched my personal computer over as well and it's great. Much quicker boot, updates are quiet and don't take over all my computer resources. Also cheaper. Here's a link to Eset's NOD32:
    http://www.eset.com/

You can download a trial for first 30 days, then it's $40 per year.

You'll want to uninstall Norton (or any other antivirus) before you install NOD32.

I run norton 2008 firewall & anti-virus on a computer I bought in 2001 with no slowness issues. It has to do with turning off a lot of stuff that would normally run in the background, but is not needed.

Auto-update is a big system hog. Turn that off and you should see a big difference.

Actually NO! You have a bigger chance of someone exploiting your machine! Kaspersky, highest detection rate.....slaps around the others...

Just remember to manually update every so often and there's no difference.

Norton icons in the tray also take up a lot of resources. Turning those off made a huge difference.

No, depending on people "manually" updating their system is how we get botnets installed on machines and drones chunking out spam by the bulk load because they have a rouge SMTP server running on their machines. Why do you say? BECAUSE PEOPLE WON'T UPDATE THEIR MACHINES ON A REGULAR BASIS. Instead of installing that bloatware junk called Norton (System Works is the absolute WORST) or McAfee, you're better off leaving Windows updates turned on and installing REAL AV software like Kaspersky.
