Star Wars is better because it came first. There.
    They're both awesome.

star wars, episode iv: a new hope... 1977
lord of the rings, fellowship of the ring... 1954

    come again?

yes, the movie was done first. but without lord of the rings, there is no star wars. it was legendary before the idea of a galaxy far far away popped into george lucas's mind. lotr legitimized the entire sci-fi/fantasy genre. it paved the way by being the first major work to take mythological themes from ancient classic literature and create new stories and worlds with it. it turned that into a mainstream artform for the first time ever, converting it from b-movie schlock material to serious artistic statement. star wars owes its existence to lotr.

I like Star Wars but I just don't see why people think it is as great as it is.

Yeah, it is a good story (which is why I like Star Wars)...but the movies (and I will group them all together) have horrible acting, and terrible dialogue. I own them and watch them occasionally but just don't see the hardcore fascination some people have with these movies.

    I dunno...
