I have watched the trilogy so many times and I just never get sick of it. I am an admitted LOTR nerd/geek/mark/whatever.

spread some love for the greatest trilogy of all time

screw the godfather- starwars-Frodo would get his ass kicked by Yoda yes, but the one ring rules all, even jedis!Luke would spend all his time looking for his father not the ring. Indiana jones would get lost in Mordor, Spiderman would get choked out by Golem, the x-men would probably kick the fellowships ass, and yes they have a blackbird jet so getting around wuold be easier, but hety Gandalf would find a way! Oceans ## please Clooney would be taken by the ring, Jason and Freedy would be lackeys the Sauron. The crow would lose a close fight with Aaragorn, Dracula...well elves hate Vampires, Mummies and all undead creatures, and they are immortal. Gimli would eat Harry Potter for dinner, and Boromir would die at the habds of James Bond(he really did) but in the end the magic rope Sam had would serve to tie up 007 when Merry and Pip gang tackle his british ass. And come on Shadowfax would kill the black stallion in a race.

I am a total dork

the extended cuts were great too.
  • Good, you're the perfect person to answer this question..

I recently watched the trilogy finally, and I don't understand how the mythology works at all...so one guy a long time ago just decides to make a ring to rule everyone on Earth? I mean, how do you explain that?

The reason I love Star Wars so much is because the mythology actually makes sense to me...there's an energy field that can be manipulated for good and evil, and there's a constant struggle for balance there. But some guy making a ring with special powers? I dunno, I don't see it.

i wrote an entire thesis on this. it's very neo-pagan-christian. sauron (the ring-maker) is more like a devil or demon. he was the second in command to the real bad ass (satan) in the old ages. it's very complicated. tolkien's explanation of the magic in lotr is very subtle. i can give a rundown later, but im too tired right now.

i played one where you drink every time they show the ring or mention it, and chug anytime someone is wearing it until they take it off. you get blasted.

The "mythology" of Stars is ancillary to its film categorization, which is science fiction. The struggle between good and evil exists for the sake of providing a generalized plot into which spaceships and light sabres can be interjected. The force is to star wars what housecall repairmen are to porn movies.

I remember Mark Hamill saying that the force was, "...religion's greatest hits." Star Wars was not intended to be appreciated for its mythological assumptions.

Anyway, the ring in LOTR represents desire for individual success. The hobbits care not for the ring because they represent humility. That is, they have learned the art of being content with what they have because they get a second breakfast.

That's why the Baggins are the enigmatic protagonists of this movie. They are the only hobbits who desire to experience something greater than what the shire has to offer. That is, they've been infected with malcontent.

But, the unique combination of malcontent and the values of the shire make it possible for frodo to objectively remain in possession of the ring while having the boldness and sense of adventure required for the journey to mordor.

pffffft...ancillary. gtfo. All this time, I've appreciated Star Wars for the wrong reasons!

    can't beat it!
  • Wow, I'm not alone.
I watch it all the time, and will never grow tired of it. Wonderful score as well. Good movies. Best trilogy ever. I even have the books. I just got me some hardcover, cloth-bound, collectors edition books. :: sigh :: I can't even write clearly when I think of that series.

If ROTK didn't end so badly I may agree. They dragged that out waaaaay too long. They should have just released the extra 20 minute ending on DVD and stopped with the city bowing to the hobbits.

  • Lord of the Rings is the best trilogy ever. Doing the Extended Edition Marathon is especially cool because the movies connect so well with each other. I think I'm going to pass out to Fellowship tonight.
“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’” - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Haha, I love the Lord of the Rings books and movies...but I must say as far as nerdiness goes, I'm totally a scooby! :D That is, a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" fan, to the point where for a time towards the ends of both shows I might have been more interested in what was going to happen with these characters than my favourite band. :embarrassed: Don't mock me, these shows were my LIFE as far as television goes.

I'm not a huge movie or TV buff (no pun intended) but I was soooo emotionally invested in these characters. Not so much the week-to-week plots (I could care less about most of the demons and whatnot), but the overall story arcs and relationships. It's just one of those things that if you watched it from the beginning without judging the craptastic bumps in the road in seasons 1 and 2, it was impossible not to get seriously hooked on this world. And I've never seen a spinoff work as a standalone show as well as "Angel". Granted, by season 5 it was pretty much "The Spike Show" (which I totally don't mind :D) but it was a phenomenal show in its own right, and less of a teen drama.
