with food:D

I'm hungry so i went investigating the empty fridge only to find crescent rolls from last christmas that were never baked. I decided in MY mind that they are STILL good.... apparently almost a year old is NOT TOO old for me:)

*they are a little dry... but still tasty, we'll see if I survive the night:p

So how old is too old when it comes to food for YOU?? will you eat something after it has expired, or at least give it a try to see if it's edible? Or do u toss things are close to the expiration date?

**edit*** these are really gross and dry, I'm gonna toss them. I think a year may be a bit too long for me now.... maybe 8-9 months considering what it is;)

cheese is great! it's bad milk that we've conditioned ourselves to think is edible and when it turns green we stll think is good as long as we get rid of the green stuff....out of sight out of mind....LOVE IT!!! :D:D:D

wow. the fridge? Krissy would actually vomit right now if she were reading this. she is a freak about exp. dates. until i met her , i had know idea whatsoever that ketsup and mustard and salad dressing even had exp. dates. a month or two b4 she "officially" moved in here, but had stayed here every night for two months , she cleaned out my fridge, and threw damn near everything away. i had about 20 different kinds of BBQ sauce and most had never even been openend, and she tossed them all !!!

canned goods too ! i had never even looked at the exp. date on a canned good. i just figured they lasted a damn long time cause people stock their bomb shelters with canned goods. Nuclear winter lasts about , what, two years or so? so i figured canned goods would last at least that long :D

    i was wrong.

Oh i'm sure they were still "technically" edible :D

I used to be that way..... then I became lazy and hungry, NOT a good combo!;)

thats what i say. how fucked up can a bottle of BBQ sauce get? really?

anyway, she will throw something out days b4 the exp. date. i keep telling her that im 100% sure that they give you a bit of a "grace period" on the dates.

    she aint having it.

Everything you need to know is here.

It's rather confusing. I guess grocery stores need to sell stuff though.

to the OP, where do you live? stuff has dates on it...

do a search on food's expiration date vs. sell by date. there's a diffeence. I looked it up once when I had a question on eggs. You can use food past the sell by date. The stores do it that way b/c they know you will keep it in your fridge for a while after buying. but if you question a particular food, you can find charts online.

do not use past exp. date.

with me, it depends on what food it is. any meat I will NOT touch past expiration date and very reluctantly ON the day too.

stuff like milk, veggie things, canned stuff.. if it smells and/or looks off, I'll toss it. if not, I'll give it a go. :D

especially with milk, if it's a day or two past expiration and nothing's happened to it, it's good. or if I feel the slightest bit queasy about it, I'll probably bake something and use it there. :D

    I hate throwing food away!!

you have to be careful with leftovers. my mom's friend ate something 4 days old that her daughter prepared and got very ill. some ppl think, "well it was kept really cold"

not so, i read that each day a leftover breaks down more and more (what ever that means)

A sell by date is usually a guide, a use by date is usually an instruction. Canned and dried goods would probably be ok, but I'd take care with 'fresh' or chilled food. But hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained :)

oh and of course, dried/dry foods! I've got tons and tons of macaroni (apparently it's a fashionable gift to someone who's moving to their own flat) and I probably won't be able to consume it all before the 'use by' date but I'm sure they'll be ok. :D

Oh, hell yes. I routinely eat yogurt that is a month or more past the date. :D

LOL. I have a very acute sense of smell. When she does this, I'll take a sniff. If I dry-heave she won't eat it.

that is the date, best by 11/9/08, for example... do not eat after that.

my problem, is stuff we froze, even though we dated it. I had wrapped up chicken breasts really well and I took them out of the freezer the other day.
They were frozen in December 2007. My mom said that since they were in my regular freezer that we're opening constantly (as opposed to one of the big ones no one goes in), she said to throw it away, it may be freezer burn. They looked really good but I still threw them away.

I think I have an old pamphlet that I bought at the grocery store a million years ago (the eighties, lol) that explains this stuff. I think diff. cuts of meat are good in the freezer for diff. time periods.
