like girls to have short hair??

I was bored and figured I'd check out match.com (not for a date....please don't think that, i'm far from ready for that!) but just to see what's out there.
Well almost 99% of the guys had Long hair listed for a preference for their "date". This got me thinking....all through my life most of the guys I've known liked long hair...I myself have short hair, and prefer it on myself. Even when I met my soon to be ex-husband I had longer hair that I was about to cut off, he begged me not to cut it off! I did anyway (and he did admit he liked the short hair on me better...or maybe he didn't and that's secretly why we're getting divorced;)) I've had a few friends who weren't allowed to cut their hair short cause their husbands would get mad...????? weird if u ask me!

So guys the question stands....why is long hair so much better? I feel left out;)

for me, long or short hair doesn't really matter. there are girls who look good on short rather than long hair & vice versa. it really depends on how you project with your hair, whether it's long or short.

Are you kidding? I am in the process of begging my wife to keep the hair short! She looks amazing since she cut it but I think she thins it looks less feminine. Nothing could be further than the truth.

My wife could be bald and I would think it was hot.

  • I've had both really short hair and really long hair and men always prefer the long. I have no idea why but it dumbfounds me.

It's long at the minute (has been for a couple of years now) and apparently it was one of the things that attracted Dave to me :o

The bigger question is why do girls cut their hair short when most guys want it long?

It depends on the person its on, some girls look better with short hair and some with long but in general, I really love the shorter haired look, the kind of Amelie-esque hair. I find it very attractive :p

  • God, this topic... see here's the thing about us guys... for the most part, we're straight. Which means were are biologically attracted to women. For me this means, beyond the other person having a vagina, femininity. I think short hair on a woman can reduce that, depending on the woman in question, greatly. Now some women can pull it off and make it look really good while retaining all their femininity. Note that, this isn't soley limited to a hair issue, I have never found Kate Moss attractive because she has the body of a young boy (well, never mind her general mingin'ness).

To me, as a man, anything leaning towards androgeny in a woman is not attractive. If they like to have short-hair, well all the power to them, but personally, I find it a turn-off. And really, I think it's just a matter of nature.

I'm straight, I think androgyny can be attractive. Don't make it about sexuality. It's a matter of taste.

I don't believe anyone is 100% straight anyway.

  • My girlfriend has lovely long, wavey dark hair. It's beautiful. But every other girl I've dated has had short hair. I'm not fussed either way. My first girlfriend had glasses, short hair and always wore checked shirts and jeans.

Hey, I'm not saying that I'm the manliest of men out there or anything, but I think it is about sexuality. There are still base instincts in all of us, which perhaps deviant to varying degrees in different people. You can write it off as purely taste if you'd like but I think that over-simplifies it.

I think you're over-simplifying it when you say it's all about 'sex and instinct'... Some would say getting into bar brawls every night is instinctual behaviour as well.

Aye but I'm straight, like I say, I can appreciate whether a guy is good looking or not but I've never had romantic feelings for one, yet I can find supposedly "masculine" features in a woman attractive. It doesn't mean I like guys, I reckon there's more to finding a person attractive than their looks and there's more to being a woman than having a woman's body. Like I say, I don't think anyone is 100% straight but I would never call myself bisexual because I'm not interested in men, even if I can objectively appreciate... how can I put this, certain male aesthetics :D

I guess what I'm saying is, and I've had this argument with female friends about this girl who works in a bar I go to and could be described as "boyish" but I find her really attractive, you can appreciate androgyny without having an underlying homosexual reason for it. I reckon :)

    I didn't say that... No, it isn't.

But neither is 'short hair = masculine/long hair = feminine' an issue of gay or straight, or 'instinct'.

I appreciate what you're saying, however, the way I see it, it is essentially all about nature. Human beings are meant to reproduce (I mean I don't want to personallly) and instincts and sexuality are meant to propagate the species. Of course taste plays into it to a degree, but I think to say that it's purely preference and a matter of taste ignores evolutionary fundamentals. I believe that people are born homosexual or bisexual. I don't think it's a choice or a taste. I just believe the same principles apply to attraction, as well.

It's weird... You're arguing one thing but you sound like someone arguing the other. I can't believe you've made it into a gay/straight issue to be honest. But either way, your comments - or the way you deliver them - remind me of those who say heterosexuality is the norm for society and 'the way it should be', just because it's 'normative' or a majority.

A girl being attractive for having long hair is no more instinctually, biologically or evolutionarily 'normal' than a man being heterosexual.

So does this also apply to men with long hair?

Surely, heterosexual women shouldn't find them attractive as they're 'too feminine'?

I'm sorry but to a certain extent, I think you're wrong.

See, I don't understand how you can separate the two. If you say we like what we like, well what does that mean? That it's a taste thing? In that case liking men or women could just be explained that way too.

The hair issue is a matter of perception. I have had long hair several times, and I love it. But once I cut it everyone, especially my female friends said how much better it looked. I knew when I had my hair long that it was limiting my options, so to speak, but I didn't mind. Attraction is largely instinctual. Now, I'm not saying short hair automatically handicaps a single women, it depends on her other attributes... enough studies have been carried out on human attraction and the link between that and reproduction.

Or maybe it's all one big coincidence.

I totally get what J is saying. As a ragingly heterosexual woman, I still find it easy to appreciate beauty in other women. According to 'evolution' then I should find 'masculine' women more attractive, but the women I find most beautiful generally have long hair and exceptionally beautiful, curvy, feminine bodies.

I am arguing that the point of attraction is reproduction. Innately, it is. I don't care about whatever society says. I'm speaking in far more basic terms. It's not about normal or not, it's about what guarantees the survival of the species. Homosexuality does not accomplish that. Which to me personally, if fine. But if you want to talk bare bones about why men in general perfer certain attributes in women, it's gonna come down to nature. Breast size is the typical example.

My only reason in bringing up homosexuality was to illustrate that attraction goes beyond choice or taste. There's a lot going on biologically. I'm sure nurture then plays a roll in specifics, but I believe to write it all off to just taste is ignoring the role of nature.

Well that is kind of the point. There are so many different things that a man can find physically atractive about a woman, the least of which the length of her hair.

I was lucky and married someone who is physically beautiful but it was her soul that got me hot.
