Yep, Solat13 and nfanel are pretty awesome people. (I met you guys in line at the Cornell show at the TLA, if you remember.)
Okay, so now I gotta prepare myself for the fingerprick, and it'll be smooth sailing after that it seems. Gulp...
of course i remember!

i think they ask everyone to give platelets. they stalk me about that...haha.
i give platelets, too...actually it's even better than giving blood because you can drink that same day since you get your blood back!

You're nuts!! I did that once when I was in college because I was broke and my best friend was coming into town.... the lab was paying $50. anyways, when they were pumping the blood back in my body the machine started beeping and i looked down and my vein was expanding. I fucking FREAKED OUT  the nurse then came over and flicked my vein and then adjusted the machine, and the rest of the procedure went okay.
I did get wasted that night though
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.
I always try to give blood whenever the Red Cross comes to our workplace. One time I couldn't give for a year because I went to Cozumel for a week's vacation.
In college I remember one time I was giving blood and the nurse told me, "Are you OK, you look really pale." And I said, "Cool! You got a mirror?"

Ahem... kind of embarrassing... I was so nervous that I couldn't get my pulse down below 103, and I couldn't donate. So yeah, it was kind of shameful. But they said I can come back tomorrow, and I definitely will. All that thinking about it screwed me over, haha.
I wish I could rename this thread "Donating blood in about 24 hours."
It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win
I've never been able to donate blood because I'm diabetic. My blood is "tainted" with too much sugar. (I'm type 1 by the way, totally insulin dependent).
To all of you that have donated blood, I'd like to Thank You for doing that. My son has received about 12 transfusions in his short little life. He may have some of YOUR blood in him!! THANK YOU!!!

Just think of the litte train that could. I always do. Also, whether you do it today, tomorrow, next year, whatever, it's all good, and appreciated

it's the effort that counts. there's really nothing to worry about. i know some people have said they reacted differently, but i've never had a bad experience and none of the people i have gone with have either. the worst thing i can say is that one of the girls took a long time to finish and felt a little weak. i was done in a matter of minutes...which doesn't bode well for me if i get stabbed or shot, i guess.
if you're still worked up tomorrow, no shame at all. at least you tried.

As a member of the Armed Services Blood Program (the military's supply of blood), I want to thank everyone that donates! It's very important, just takes a little bit of your time. It's important to make sure you've eaten and are well hydrated, and if you're not feeling well let the staff know immediately. Get a good tech (like myself ) and you should do just peachy!

DOSW - awesome that you volunteered and that you're going back!!! I thank everyone who donates. I used to organize 2 blood drives a year at my old company plus I was a VIP donor (4+ times per year)...they hated to see my scrawny veins but my pump is great, I can fill a bag in 6 minutes. Anyway, kind of fell off the wagon with donating in the last year and a half and need to get back to it. My goal is to donate a gallon. Blood can't be manufactured, it can only come from generous people such as yourself! Keep it up!
believe it or not, we don't "need" anything. that is only the spoiled brat in us trying to fill some temporary solution to an emptyness that does not exist.

I always wanted to donate, but I was always under the weight limit. Since then I've gone over the weight thing, but found out I'm borderline anemic so don't qualify anyway. :( It's a great thing to do though.
Just editing to add that you can have your young/healthy dog donate blood too. It's always needed and is an easy thing to do.

I'm very fortunate. I have great veins and have zero fear of needles.
Nurses love my veins. I role up both of my sleeves and say, "OOOH, Yeah! Take your pick!"
I haven't given blood since high school, though. And I did almost pass out, but it was my own fault. They told me I needed to sit there, but I could see that my bus was about to leave, so I ran out the door. The feeling reminded me of what it feels like to try to run in a dream.
I guess I'll need to give some blood before my next tattoo, since they want you to wait a year after a tattoo before giving blood.

Same here. I know it's coming and fully know what to expect, yet it still is worse than the actual needle.
