'My name is Bono and I'm a rockstar.'

WTF? Why is that necessary?

Also, 'I don't know who the organisations are but you can find them out.' I could've told the cameras that myself.

And he DOES look like a cartoon hybrid of a skiier and Tim Westwood.
'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

Did I ever tell you that I dislike Bono....very much?!

    I mean, yeah, it's great...the work he's doing.

But, get rid of your $1000 rock star glasses and $750 scarf....and stop "acting"!

    *end rant*

To be honest, it didn't sound like he was all that knowledgable about the 'work he's doing' - not from the evidence of that clip, anyway. Even if he is, he seems to think he's doing it single-handedly.

Give him a break, He's a "Rock Star" not a missionary worker.

I'm using the word "work" here loosely. It's good that he's uses his celebrity (and money) to make people aware. I'm sure he doesn't do very much hands on stuff....or even have much knowledge of what is actually happening. He's just the smiling face on the TV.

The whole glasses thing just gets to me....it seems disrespectful.

I agree with you a bit but he did earn that money. He must be rolling it. If he wants to wear expensive glasses, he can. :)

Yeah. He's talking about extreme poverty whilst wearing layers and layers of bling.

    I can just imagine him handing a little impoverished kid a sack of $2 rice....while wearing $1000 glasses, a $750 scarf, $800 shoes, $600 jeans and a $4000 leather jacket....and a $400 haircut (with $500 of coloring).

That's not what I'm saying at all.

I see showing up to help the poor while wearing J-Lo sunglasses a designer cashmere scarf, and 35 TV cameras, a bit much.

best thing about Bono is that he's on someone's sig here...

    somthing like this:-

Bono (at Glasgow gig): "*click* .... *click* ... see every time i click my fingers a child in Africa dies"

guy in crowd: "stop fucking doing it then"
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

but does it matter? isn't the important thing that he is using his fame to try to stop famine or aids or whatever?....it's one thing if one doesn't like u2 but to take that dislike to criticize him for trying to help the world seems wacky to me...:)

proportionately speaking he gives away a bigger percentage of his money away to charity than you or I. He also raises more money than you or i... he is naturally ginger haired however... and therein lies his major fault. ;)

exactly. this is bono we're talking about. he's not new news. he's an aging rock star who has shifted his career into more of the charity field. does he have a huge ego? of course. but he has to be who he is and do what he does. he's not hurting anyone, and he is helping. the fact is that bono has done a lot more for the developing world than probably any of us have. I mean I give my donations once a year at christmas but bono really is in a position to do a lot, and he has. think of all the obscenely rich people who don't care or help at all? I think bono is really genuine in his concern. how can you bash someone for HELPING even if it's not the same way you would go about it?

I think it does matter. And please don't get me wrong....as I've stated before....I'm not criticizing his donations (of his celebrity, time and money...it's incredible what he's done). I am criticizing the way he does it. There are plenty of "questionable" people who donate to "good" causes....I think Bono is one of them.

well that's your opinion, I don't find bono to be "questionable" at all. do you mean questionable in terms of his motives? I don't think anyone could be as involved as bono has been throughout his entire career, and have questionable motives. he really has gone above and beyond in some cases. Bono has actually done some hard core shit. a lot of it is the book "u2 at the end of the world" (which is an awesome book no matter how much you like or dislike u2). He's gone into war zones when everyone else was evacuating, he's gone on greenpeace missions...I really can't question him given he's done so much more than I ever will.

yea but do you think that girl really cares what he's wearing? if i was poor, i wouldn't give a shit what the person that gave me help (money, food etc) was wearing.....but i see what you're saying......and the sunglasses to bug me too mostly because they're shitty looking glasses...:p :)

    KUDOS!~

I feel EXACTLY THE SAME WAY!

or the diamond earing - when you are talking about the plight of Africans.

I have to agree with cutback here. He must be so rich that even if he gave away millions, he'd still have enough to buy himself some expensive shades. And why not?
  • The guy's done a lot of work to raise awareness and help people. I think he called himself a rockstar mostly to make a joke, and to make the point that he's not trying to pass himself off as a missionary worker.

    Another pathetic hater thread. yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

I don't see anything wrong with how he's dressed in that photo...you can't tell if he's wearing a flashy watch or what, we're just assuming he is because he's bono...I don't think he looks too flashy though. would it give him more cred if he bought a whole new "poor people outfit" for the trip?

he does often use the words rockstar or popstar to sort of diminish his own value.

the world's leading poverty economist chooses to work with bono...I think that's saying something.

    SHe probably doesn't even notice.

Me? I cannot tell a $50 pair of sunglasses from $1,000 and same with clothing. I guess I am just ghetto that way!!! ;)

  • The glasses are easily explained...
    Bono wrote:
There's many reasons for the glasses, posing I'm sure right up there, privacy, and other more medical. I do like having one step of a remove, actually. I don't think when I'm singing I hold anything back and I don't think when I'm writing I hold anything back. But I think I'm allowed to hold something back in this kind of a set-up. As honest a man as you are and as honest as I'm trying to be, there is a natural insincerity in the set-up and I'm trying to be much better at it. But just one step removed.

As the article says, it's light sensitivity - his eyes get "puffy" if he doesn't wear the glasses. So even the lights in the restaurant might have aggravated it. If he doesn't want to give the specifics of his medical condition, that's his choice.

The way I see it, it's not like the kids in Africa care that he spent hundreds of Euros on a pair of glasses - they probably just appreciate the fact that someone like Bono cares. And I doubt Bono wears the glasses to taunt the poor.

But most importantly, if he's gonna spend that much money on a pair of glasses, I'd like to see him get a lot of wear outta them, at least.:p
