...Over what they do/don't wear on their freakin' head???
I don't fully understand some religions, people, traditions. Whether or not this is considered an accident, to me it screams the disconnect between some cultures and basic Women's/Human Rights.
TORONTO, Ont. -- A 16-year-old girl has died after allegedly being choked by her father over a dispute with her family over her refusal to wear the hijab, the Islamic headscarf worn by some Muslim women.
Peel Regional Police arrested a 57-year-old man Tuesday morning after receiving a 911 call from a suburban home in Mississauga from a man saying he had killed his daughter, according to a Toronto newspaper Web site.
According to the National Post, a Toronto newspaper Web site, when police arrived at the house they found the teen on the floor without any vital signs.
Constable J.P. Valade, a spokesman for Peel police, would not release the names of either the victim or the man arrested and would not give any details about what transpired inside the home.
“We are not getting into the details of her injuries at this time,” he told the newspaper. “We aren’t getting into any details about this case. This investigation is really in its infancy. Officers are still canvassing the neighborhood and talking to family members.”
Friends of the teenager identified her as Aqsa Parvez and said they were shocked by her death but said her family was very strict.
“She got threatened by her father and her brother,” Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson told the newsaper. “He said that if she leaves, he would kill her.”
Another friend said she had previous fights with her father over wearing Islamic dress and wearing her hijab all of the time.
Police confirmed there were other family members home when the teen died.

Been all over the news up here. I am surprised to see it on this board.
At least the father called 911 himself. :rolleyes:You've changed your place in this world!0 -
no accident, Toronto police are deciding whether to charge the father with 1st or 2nd degree murder, and his brother is charged with obstructing an investigation I believe.
it is sickening, poor girl, her poor friends

Yeah, it looks bad from over here. Cos most of us have a different culture. Over there... things are different. You can't judge something when you don't fully understand it.
Also: No, I would never kill my own kid. It's okay, Pluto. I'm not a planet either.0 -

Maybe you should do your research before you decide to move to a new country. Catch up on what it is really like before you have to kill a child because she wants to explore. You've changed your place in this world!0 -

No more procreating for any of them.drivingrl: "Will I ever get to meet Gwen Stefani?"
kevinbeetle: "Yes. When her career washes up and her and Gavin move to Galveston, you will meet her at Hot Topic shopping for a Japanese cheerleader outfit.

If they were Yankees fans, I'd think about it.
j/k
But in all seriousness, I saw that story the other day and it's just sickening. I'm all for tolerance of other cultures but some things are just way over the line.
I'm interested to see what comes from this horrible, tragic event.- Busted down the pretext

yeah and it should have the Poll option for fairness and impartiality reasons!!!
fucking awful story though.. we had a bad one recently here in the UK.. a revenge killing by some guy and he killed hos own baby in a bakers in the North of England... i feel sick just thinking about it..oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0 -
Just because this happened in Canada doesn't mean it couldn't have happened in the good ole USA. If this did happen in the US, I bet there would be an uprising! Especially in a year of political bs.
And yes MCKB maybe this should be over in AMT but I really don't care. The mods will move it if they please. It's a habit to post here I guess.
(disclaimer - not at all meant to be a slam on MCKB)I love to turn you on0 -
I would not kill my child over head coverings, I would not kill my child if God asked me to.
I have never entertained the idea of killing my child, except sometimes at bedtime.... and the will to show I will always be better than before.0 -

If conforming to society means not murdering your children, then yes, I guess so.My whole life
was like a picture

I can say with absolute certainty that Magstar isn't condoning murdering the child. I think the point she's trying to make is that as cut-and-dried as we see this - y'know... religion taken to insane, wrong-headed extremes - for the father, it's his religion, and this is what needed to be done.
Is the father right? Hell no.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0 -
sigh it is too convoluted to post about this topic for me, I guess...
the question to your answer is : I hope not, but who knows??? there are a tremendous amount of variables...I mean this could even become a segway into an abortion topic...don't worry I wont go into that one!
based on the reasoning of the parties involved then the answer is : fuck no.
as far as having to acclimate to societal standards...um okay sure it would be nice if people while keeping their cultural identity joined in with the rest of mainstream, however choking a girl isnt just upsetting to societies fabric. I do believe it is also against the law.
even in canadaIF YOU WANT A PLATE OF MY BEEF SWELLINGTON, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY THE COVERCHARGE.0 -
Meh, while I think the arguement of "In their culture, things are done differently" is releavant, it is not relevant to this, because I think we all know that the father would not have killed his daughter if it was not for religious extremism.no matter where you go,
there you are.

I think EF? may have been hinting at obeying the laws of your new country, not abandoning religious beliefs.0 -

Doesn't matter if it was or it wasn't. Murder here in Canada is against the law for all people and all religions.0
