I'm on Christmas Carol overload, but I never get tired of listening to Nat King Cole's version of 'The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting...)' or 'O Holy Night'.

Any favorites???
I love to turn you on

It sure as shite isn't the one about the Christmas Shoes....:(
That came on while Holden and I were decorating the tree this morning and of course, it swept me in...crying in a matter of seconds..dumb shoes...

Though that really isn't a carol, is it. :o

    I like Winter Wonderland. :)

  • I agree with you, you just can't beat Nat on the Christmas Song. I've got a Burl Ives Christmas album around here somewhere...its pretty classic stuff too.

These are not your regular Christmas Carols, but I sure love them...

    Jingle Bell Rock- Bobbie Helms

Rockin around the Christmas Tree- Brenda Lee

Happy X-MAS/War is over- John Lennon

Something about Christmas Time- Bryan Adams

    As for Classic Carols:

    Sleight Ride

    Winter Wonderland

    Silver Bells

    White Christmas

    Jingle Bells

Have yourself a Merry little Christmas
And so the lion fell in love with the lamb...,"
    "What a stupid lamb."
    "What a sick, masochistic lion."

  • the world's creeeeeeeepiest Christmas carol of all time is Good King Wenceslas

and therefore that is my favorite...unless you count "what's this" from Nightmare before Christmas.

I don't mind "ejinglie Bells" too much. (sorry but that was a 3 Caballeros reference...sigh, I am a dork)

I love the Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby and David Bowie.

And though it's not really a X-Mas carol, I'm a big fan of the Kinks "Father X-Mas."

I used to love that song, but one line annoys me from it - I think it's a line by Bono singing "Thank God it's them instead of you"

I mean are we really thanking God that they're starving and not us while singing a song to raise money for them?

That line just always bothered me. The rest of the song is great though.

    hey, watch it! :-p

here, i'll bring everyone down and post the lyrics...it's actually called christmas shoes and it's so freaking sad:

    It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Trying to buy that last gift or two
I'm really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing around like little boys do
And in his hands he held
    A pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
    Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
    If Momma meets Jesus, tonight.

They counted pennies for what seem like years
And cashier says son there's not enough here
    He searches is pockets franticly
And he turned and he looked at me
And he said Momma made Christmas good at our house
Most years she just did without
    Tell me Sir
    What am I gonna do?
Some how I’ve got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I layed the money down
I just had to help him out
    And I'll never forget
    The look on his face
When he said Momma's gonna look so great.

Sir I wanna buy these shoes, for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
    Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see, she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful,
    If Momma meets Jesus tonight.

I knew I caught a glimpse of heavens love as he thanked me and ran out.
I know that God had sent that little boy to remind me
    What Christmas is all about

Sir I wanna buy these shoes for my Momma please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
    Could you hurry Sir?
Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes will make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful
    If Momma meets Jesus tonight

I want her to look beautiful
    If Momma meets Jesus tonight

"Christmas on the Block" by Alan Mann. Alan Mann was a local Philly musician who wrote this Christmas song in the early 80s (around there) about a family in the philly area who was blind but who every year put up a large lighted display around their house for everyone to see. It's a true story and such a beautiful song and makes me tear up listening to it. It's pretty much not available except on WMMR here in Philly - a few years ago WMMR made it available for download but don't know if they still do that. It's really a beautiful song if you get a chance to hear it. Maybe if i get a chance I can write down the lyrics.

PS: the writer and performer of the song Alan Mann is no longer with us as he was killed in a fire in his house in Philly a few years later. very sad.

Be happy you don't know the Christmas Shoes....but I am sure that you do.
It is a sappy Christmas song about this little boy that wants to buy a pair of shoes for his mom that is sick but he doesn't have enough money. He knows she will love them and wants her to look beautiful if she meets Jesus tonite as Dad says she doesn't have much time.....:(
It is so over the top....but damn...it gets me everytime.

You should hear the sappy guy singing it.
And then a chorus of little children, probably all from an orphanage and with little crutches and wheelchairs....:(

  • I was rockin out to the Neil Diamond Christmas album on Friday night at my daughter's Christmas performance and it got me thinking. I dont see the Christmas albums out like they used to back in the day. Nat, Johnny Mathis, Rod Stewart and even the freakin Beach Boys had one. I cant imagine I'm gonna see a My Chemical Christmas or Deck the Halls by Avenged Sevenfold. Nor do I think I want to.

    Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses
    River - Joni Mitchell
    And my favorite:
Merry Christmas From The Family - Robert Earl Keen
    ...
Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk at our Christmas party.
We were drinkin' champagne punch and homemade eggnog.
Little sister brought her new boyfriend... He was a Mexican.
We didn't know what to think of him until he sang Feliz Navidad.

Brother Ken brought his kids with him - the three from his first wife Lynn,
and the two identical twins from his second wife Mary Nell.
Of course he brought his new wife, Kay- who talks all about AA,
chain smokin' while the stereo plays Noel, Noel, the First Noel.

Carve the turkey, turn the ballgame on.
Mix margaritas when the eggnog's gone.
Send somebody to the Quik Pak store,
we need some icing and extension cords,
a can of bean dip and some Diet Rite,
a box of tampons and some more Burl Ives.
    Halleluia everybody say cheese,
    Merry Christmas from the Family.

Fran and Rita drove from Harlogen. I can't remember how I'm kin to them.
But when they tried to plug their motor home in, they blew our Christmas lights.
Cousin David knew just what went wrong, so we all waited out on our front lawn.
He threw the breaker and the lights came on and we sang Silent Night, oh Silent Night.

Carve the turkey, turn the ballgame on
Make bloody marys cause we all want one.
Send somebody to the Stop 'N Go,
we need some celery and a can of fake snow,
a bag of lemons and some Diet Sprite,
a box of tampons and some Salem Lights.
    Halleluia everybody say cheese,
    Merry Christmas from the Family.

    Feliz Navidad...
