looked to be pretty close to MSG, is this correct and is it the "THE" bronx that is generally not regarded as being a pleasant area for anyone from out of town? Are these places i should stay well away from when visiting NY or am i overreacting due to media portrayal over the years? Just looking for some little pointers here,

many thanks :)

edit* just noticed the yankees stadium is next to/in the bronx, surely it cant be that bad a place then hey?

    1) the bronx is not that relatively bad overall (it's like an inner-ring suburb)
    2) it is nowhere near MSG
    3) you don't have to go near harlem to go to MSG either
    4) yeah I think you might be overreacting. getting around NY safely has never been a problem for me! It's not very scary at all.

look at a simple tourist map of manhattan, it will make more sense than google earth. (I recommend the streetwise maps for very simple layouts of any city when you don't need to go outside the heavily traveled areas).
there is a hotel right across the street from MSG (Pennsylvania???) that is relatively cheap. It's not a very nice hotel in the least, but it's livable and in 2003 it was packed with PJ fans.

Damn, I wish I could go to MSG this year!

Glad I'm not the only one confused! If anyone can just direct me to a cheap hotel to stay in for a week, near MSG - I'd be greatful!!

Certain areas of the Bronx are safe, others are not.

I personally would not venture to areas outside of Manhattan when you are not familiar with NY - the buses, trains, etc. Keep it simple and find a hotel to stay near the Garden. Use http://www.sidestep.com to help find a hotel - they have a feature where you can sort by landmark - from the drop down pick Madison Square Garden.

The inexpensive hotels are inexpensive for a reason.....NY is not cheap. Anything under $200-$250/night you can expect to be a pit.

*Hotel Pennsylvania mentioned by GTD is $229/night. for NY that is pretty inexpensive.

well, as I said it is not a nice hotel in the least, but it is livable. our room was clean at least (though I've heard sometimes they aren't). the benefit of course is being DIRECTLY across the street from the show. But wow, I can't believe how expensive it is, I think we paid like $100 in 2003?
  • Plenty of stadiums are in dodgy areas eg Highbury in Finsbury Park, Maine Road in Moss Side etc...
A restaurant with a smoking section is like a swimming pool with a pissing section
  • How could I forget Highfield Road in Hillfields

yep, it's "THE" Bronx and not "THE" Yankees Stadium. and yes it's not a great section of the bronx, especially for a tourist. The bronx does have have great tourist spots too like the Botanical gardens and the Bronx Zoo. Easy to get to with subways. NYC is a great place to visit and safe. Enjoy and hope to see you at MSG

    In Manhattan, yes.

Totally overreacting. Both the Bronx and Harlem are fine areas. Plus, by NYC standards, they are pretty far away.

you mean a hostel? I didn't think there were many hostels in london? I've stayed in B&B hotels both times I went, there were pretty shitty for the price, and I had student discounts! (sorry, off topic, continue). In general food and transportation and whatnot will be much cheaper in NY than london in any event.

No a REAL hotel, they just have offers on now and again where if you book well in advance ya get them dirt cheap, you have to pay in advance and if you cancel or cant make it theres NO WAY you will get any refund whatsoever, but its definitely worth bearing in mind if you ever go back there ;):)

anyway, im already fretting about hotels in NY and i aint even got tickets for the shows yet!! May aswell save the hotel searching until after tomorrow at least hey?

Me too. If I have to stay in a hotel there's no way in hell I can afford to go. Hostels maybe, or with a bit of luck just kip on someone's floor. I still have a few hours to make my final decision anyway.

Perhaps if we can gather a LOAD of people to go the same hotel we can get some kind of discount (hmmm a bit hopeful i know but what else have we got other than sweet sweet hope?)

i'm planning to visit new york at the end of may (sadly the trip is planned around a wedding and cannot be changed to accomodate a pj show!) and we are renting an apartment for $150 per night.

if you go on the new york craigslist in the manhattan section under housing is a 'vacation rentals' category, way cheaper than a hotel.

    Super Vedder,
Neither Harlem nor the Bronx are near MSG and I would not stay there if you are going to the MSG shows. Harlem is way uptown and the Bronx is even farther north. MSG is on 7th Avenue and 34th Street in midtown Manhattan.

Yeah it was nice enough, it was shared bathroom but we never had a problem getting in for a shower, you have a sink in your room aswell. We liked it and would stay there again if we ever return.
