    Red Sox catching prospect Flores dies from cancer complications

    The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday that catching prospect Daniel Flores has died due to complications during treatment from cancer.

    "Everyone at the Red Sox was shocked to hear of Daniel's tragic passing," president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said in the announcement. "To see the life of young man with so much promise cut short is extremely saddening for all of us. On behalf of the Red Sox organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to Daniel's family."

    The 17-year-old Venezuelan, who signed in the summer for $3.1 million, was a highly regarded prospect who some evaluators described as one of the best defensive catchers they'd ever seen, according to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

    MLB Pipeline listed Flores as the Red Sox's No. 5 prospect.
