I vote for the players I've seen play and *YAZ* comes to mind coming from a Red Sox fan.
For players I never saw play Satchel Page/Josh Gibson if they were given a chance to play against other major leaguers.

I'm going with modern day players and I have to vote for my baby, Derek Sanderson Jeter. (yeah, I know I'm going to get yelled at)

I'd say Ty Cobb was the best all-around player ever. And best pure hitter.
One could make arguments for Honus Wagner and Babe Ruth as well.
...and Willie Mays... but I believe the above 3 to be better.Stone Gossard...riffmeister extraordinaire!

The Babe. For many reasons, but mostly because he could have been a great pitcher as well as the great slugger he was.
I would also consider:
Willie Mays
Hank Aaron
Walter Johnson
Ted Williams
Cy Young (won 20 games 15 times 30 - 5 times)
Christy Mathewson (won 20 games 13 times 30 - 4 times)
Lou Gehrig
Stan Musial
Joe Dimaggio
Ty Cobb
Roberto Clemente
Mickey Mantle
And someday soon... Alex Rodriguez~!~ Peace ~!~ Love ~!~ Pearl Jam ~!~0 -

Griffey Jr.
Had he been healthy his whole career, he would have 900 home runs. his swing still rules, and younger he could play the entire outfield by himself. All that's sacred, comes from youth....dedications, naive and true.0 -
