Can we strip the Dallas Cowboys of the "America's Team" title?

This team is the definition of "much ado about nothing". The Cowboys are so overhyped and overblown and I, as a sports fan, am tired of hearing them being discussed on ESPN every damn day. Will they make the playoffs? How is Romo's hand? How is TO feeling about things? I dont give a shit. I would understand the hype and attention if they made a run in the playoffs.....but they dont do that, do they?

There are plenty of good teams to talk about.

Rant over.....I feel better.
I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

1st off, no one in the city of Dallas or in the Cowboys organization ever designated them as "America's Team". This term was coined by Bob Ryan, the President of NFL Films in 1979.

    Here is his quote:
"I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television."

2nd, when your team gets anywhere close to the popularity of, and the amount of merchandise sold by, and overall value of the Cowboys franchise, then you can make the argument about stripping them of the title.

Like it or not, the Cowboys are far and away the most popular franchise in the NFL.

Oh, and if you want more proof, just look at the AET and see how many posts are in the Cowboys thread and how many threads there are bashing them. You don't see 42 threads about people hating the Eagles. Because they don't warrant the attention.

MORE hype? Didn't Jerry Jones say he wanted the current stadium to have a retractable roof so God could watch his favorite team?

How do you feel about the Yankees then? They are super popular, super rich, and sell tons of merchandise. Do you enjoy seeing all kinds of Yankees news, highlights, analysis, interviews, etc while they are way out of the Wild Card hunt, then promptly seeing a nice 10 seconds worth of highlights for your team?

Other teams DO warrant the attention. Thats the point. People get sick to death of seeing the Cowboys. Theres like 15 other teams in the playoff hunt.

But why is that the Cowboys/Yankees fault that ESPN or whoever feel the need to report every little thing with either of these franchises? I admit it is annoying. I'm a Dallas fan and I would love for people to stop referring to them as "America's Team".....besides, up until this year, I heard them calling the Patriots that more than the Cowboys.

Yeah, not the Cowboys fault. They are a ratings magnet.

    Since 1996:

    Dallas Cowboys 102-100
    3 Division Titles
    1-6 in playoffs
    0 Super Bowl appearances

    Philadelphia Eagles 112-88-2
    5 Division Titles
    8-7 in the playoffs
    1 Conference Championship
    1 Super Bowl appearance
    0 Super Bowl wins :(

You're right...Dallas deserves all the attention..not saying we deserve all or any of the attention but come on..be serious..since the last Super Bowl win your team is nothing but an average team

I also live in Fort Worth. The sports coverage given to the Cowboys is so insane that they are the #1 story every day of the week even when they are not playing. When Michael Phelps won his 8th Olympic gold medal, the newspaper ran it on p. 2 of the sports section with a story about the Cowboys on p. 1!

During the World Series there was practically NOTHING about baseball in the newspaper or on TV. All the sports news was still about the Cowboys. The night the Phillies won the Series the top sports story was still the Cowboys! I wanted to throw something at the TV.

When they have the Super Bowl in Jerry Jones's new stadium I hope I am as far away as possible.

Can't argue with you there about the last few years, but to go with the Yankees comparison, when was their last title? And yet they are still the lead story in baseball no matter what they do.

Point is, they are simply the most popular team in the league. They even inspire threads about how much people hate them.

My crack at the Eagles was just a joke.

They're not my team. I'm a Steelers fan. I'll take my team over those jokers any day of the week. They're playing this season. Should be interesting. I watched the Cowboys beat the snot out of Pittsburgh at Three Rivers 12 years ago. Kordell's first start. Hopefully the Steelers return the favor this season.
