Would You Rather See Pearl Jam.........

........at the beginning of a tour, or at the end of a tour? I've seen them at both and have to say that seeing them at the end of the tour is something special. It seems as though they lose all inhibitions and they genuinely seem to have fun on stage. Saying that though, that could be exhaustion setting in :D

So, back to the original question, when do you prefer to see PJ?

*I left out responses such as "any time" etc because I feel there is a genuine difference between PJ at the start of a tour, and PJ at the end of a tour*

The very last gig of the tour by far!

  • I agree...end of a tour.

I've seen them also at the beginning and the end of a tour and I can't tell. They rocked both times so I would just be happy to be there anytime they played, anywhere.

End of the tour. By that time they have a bunch of shows under their belts and are really in a groove. But, I am sure i wouldn't be complaining if I was "forced" to see a show at the beginning :-).

That's odd you should ask because I was just thinking about this over the weekend. Being in Seattle, we tend to get one or the other. They either want to start here or end a leg here. And like you, I've seen both ends. There is no doubt that they are more warmed up and in their groove latter in the tour compared to earlier in the tour. So yeah, one or the other i choose end of the tour. But, if I had my way, I'd want both. Start and end the tour in Seattle and I would a super happy camper!!

I'd rather see the shows at the end of the tour. They seem to last longer and have more rarities. It seemed on this tour it took Ed a few shows to get his stamina back to be able to sing 25+ songs a night. I would think the band would be less tight at the beginning of the tour versus the end.

BUT, one cool thing about the first few shows is that you get to be surprised by what songs are being played on the tour. While it was cool to hear Who You Are at MSG, it was expected. When I heard the song played at the WPB show this year, it was totally unexpected and a total surprise.
  • the first time i saw them was in 2000 was at the end, and they were awesome. but my favorite shows ive been to were at the gorge, and i dont know if those fell at the beginning or end. anytime works though.
    yes i aint.
  • I go to as many as I can-
this summer I jumped on the tour at Camden 1- made it all the way to Hartford with them. It was horrible leaving them in Hartford- the show was so great! All the Mass people were starting to gear up their shows- I just wanted more!
3 nights of Ed after the tour- then cold turkey- I've been shaking ever since-

This thread is getting me excited for the 2009 tour. I just hope they announce full legs at once, or possibly all of the North American legs at once. It is so much fun looking at a new tour schedule and planning out what shows you can attend and the trips.

    tough call.

early in the tour you risk seeing a rusty pearl jam or seeing a well rested band with lots of energy.

at the end of the tour you risk seeing a tired band & a tired eddie voice or a band that hit its groove and is in full swing.

i've seen shows in the beginning, middle and end. all amazing.

End of a tour, without a doubt.

On every tour in the last five years the band has sounded very rusty for the first few shows. In 2008, I don't think they really hit their stride until the Mansfield shows and by then it was all over...
  • I saw the beginning of the PJ tour in West Palm Beach, Florida and the end of the EV tour in Chicago.

    I enjoyed them both!
A child's rhyme stuck in my head...
It said "Life is nothing but a dream."
I've spent so many years in question
To find I'd known this all along.
  • Vedder's voice seems to take awhile to warm up (like a jet engine or something) so usually its a good 10 shows before he's in good form.

The band also seems sloppy. I remember the 2000 tour in Europe, where the early shows are pretty slack, but by about 12 shows in they've hit their stride.

Also the 2003 Australia tour, awful....

I think the middle is probably the best.
  • Either :D

Although seeing any band have fun at the end of a tour is something special, imo :)
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • being a musician is like being an athlete..you gotta practice everyday to stay sharp, and if you don't...it takes awhile to "get the rust off"

but when it comes to my boys..I'll take any show i can get! first, last or middle..it's ALL GOOD!!

but seeing as the very last show in Mansfield was such a magical night for me that will be very hard to top..i am slightly partial to the end shows! :)

but seeing as the very last show in Mansfield

First, middle AND last is what i prefer ;)

Hey... friend of mine that was at first and middle and "both" lasts... care to chime in? ;)

Being in the midwest, I have been to mostly middle shows previous tours, but ventured to Boston for the tour closer.

4/5 mid tour shows were super random sets w/several wtf moments, tight band, w/Ed in fine form.

Boston 2 had Wash, but the only real setlist surprise was Bee Girl. I got to cross about half the songs off my need to see list, so I'm not complaining, but that can be attributed to not seein them during the last tour cycle.
