What did the instructor tell you (about what you were doing wrong)?

Did he/she give you some drills to do?

hey - my friend is running the half ironman in florida and he's asked me to help him with his training and nutrition ... i just started reading some stuff on carb loading and pre-race and post-race meals ...

do you have any sources you can pass along that may come in handy?

There are so many websites out there now - almost all of which include training tips, nutritional information, etc. Many of them send out newsletters that are very helpful. Below are some of the ones that I rely on. As for my actual training plans I usually use Hal Higdons.

Below is a link to the "Spirit of the Marathon" movie website. It is a documentary about four runners training for a marathon - Chicago I believe. There is a one time showing only tonight in theaters across the country. You can go to the website to find out which theaters are showing it. We actually get to see it in our little town of Paducah, Kentucky.

I swam 1250 yards this morning. I am itching all over!! There has been issues with the pool that we swim in. According to one of the pool guys there they have had trouble "getting the chemicals right." Anyway, for the last three weeks I have been itching and itching. If I am out of the pool for a couple of days it seems to get a little better, but now I am going crazy!! AND I take a shower as soon as I get done swimming.

mmmmm.... my inspiration..... I'm pretty sure my inspiration for training day after day, month after month, year after year is competition. I think that one's inspiration probably varies from person to person. I know athletes who have no desire to race, but love the "alone time" of running or cycling or swimming. I think others love the weight loss or weight maintenance. I started out just wanting to stay fit and keep the weight off in middle age. But then I ran my first 5k and away I went! Our (hubby and I) social circle is now mostly other runners, cyclists, triathletes so that helps too. I look back at my race times at various races and then figure out how I can do better next time. That means running hills and doing speed work, swimming more (which I don't like), and pushing a little harder on the bike - things I wouldn't do unless I was racing.

As I recall you will be doing your first race this spring.... a 10K right? or is it a 10 mile? Anyway, keep training so you can get through that. Then see how you feel after that race. You may "get the bug" and then really get that desire to work hard and keep at it.
