What kind of business do you have?

Sometimes I think I have to strong of a work ethic. Well...at least for the crappy job I have.
  • I hire mostly european students for my business because they never ever call out, they find work that needs to be done, and they are all around great workers.
My american employees? Fucking suck! They call out, they sit on their ass not knowing what needs to be done unless you give them a list, and they always are the first to leave early.

Its really fucking pathetic to think that these spoiled kids are our future.
This country is going to shit.

PARENTS.........Teach your children the meaning of earning a dollar!
Don't give them what ever they want b/c they cry for it!

My american girl that called out said that she dosent even need the job, but her parents said if she wants to rent a house with friends at the shore for the summer she needs to work. Well dumb ass parents.....that does not help if they don't need the money b/c you give it to them.
This is why many companies hire illegals.....b/c american kids are fucking lazy!

    Fucking lazy people.....I hate them

It's all about training. Maybe the younger generation is not held responsible for much anymore, but you can train them to be better employees. How do you interview these kids anyways?

My wife and I went to the Hartford show (we are from Ontario, Canada) and this was one of the observations we both made: "Service people down here sure have no problem making the customer wait." This was at nice restaurants, fast food restaurants, interstate highway truckstop restaurants...

In Canada, if your glass is less than half full, the waiter or waitress will typically bring out a refill without even being asked. When you get to the restaurant, the hostess seats you (promptly if they are not busy) and a waiter or waitress appears usually within 30 seconds, getting your drink order.

For lunch on Friday Jun 27, we ate at "Vito's by the Park" in Hartford, which came recommended from the hotel staff. When we get there, we can see about 7-8 unbussed tables, and the hostess says it will be a 10-15 minute wait. So whatever, we weren't in a rush so we take a seat at the bar and wait. The hostess then proceeds to sit on her ass! In Canada, those tables would have been bussed within minutes of being vacated by the previous customer! And if not, the hostess, if not busy at the front would have bussed at least one of them really quickly when we came in. Instead we waited for more than 15 minutes for them to bus one of 7 or 8 tables. Then they sat us, and the waitress, despite being really friendly, was really not up to what we see in Canada at any restaurant.

And I'm not limiting this to just one experience. We went to FLA and Vegas/Utah/Arizona last year. Although, out west it was a lot closer to Canada...so I can't really complain about that area.

The best service we got in Hartford was at Hooters and I'm not kidding. Those girls were prompt, friendly and really earned their tip. (all jokes aside)

I work my American ass off at work and earn everything that I have. Just got back from a week of work on the road and am enjoying a couple days off. I had to get Wednesday off so I can try for Eddie Vedder Milwaukee tickets. :)

I've been working since I was 15. And even before then summers were spent doing shitty jobs around my house for nothing. The worst was when I was in college, I had to spend all summer working every hour under the sun so I could pay rent/bills until November when I got the grant, while everyone else in my class went travelling around the world on their J1 + other visas and their parents money. That pissed me off royally, but I think I'm the better person for it anyway.

Couldn't agree w/ you more. The kids these days have no work ethic whatsoever. The sad part of it is it's our generation who raised them. I personally have no children so I don't take blame for it. :D

LOL I was going to say to the OP...maybe it is you!
    Maybe it is me....
But The way I work is I tell all the kids that if you are fair with me, I am fair with you. I always give them off if they request it in advance. I am a very easy going boss unless they screw with me.
    Don't mistake kindness for weekness.
As I said before, I have many employees that come back every year and enjoy working for me mostly b/c I am fair.

When it comes to shit that matters, and I am not talking slinging a pizza or making a sandwich, we American Employees far from suck...

    "U.S. Most Productive Country
    Tuesday September 4, 2007
A new report by the International Labour Office claims that the United States is the most productive country in the world. According to the report, "The acceleration of productivity growth in the US has outpaced that of many other developed economies." In the report, the U.S. is followed in productivity by Ireland, Luxembourg, Belgium, and France.
However, the report stats that Americans work more hours than any other workers in highly developed countries so if you look at productivity per hour worked, the most productive countries are Norway, the U.S., and France. I find this report surprising; I never would've guessed that the U.S. is so productive, especially compared to Pacific Rim countries, which don't even make the top five!"

That is great. I hope it stays that way. Maybe these kids will grow out of being lazy. But for now the ones who work for me as cashiers suck.
Yea its a easy job but its not shitty, You go to the beach all day and work for 6 hours at night waiting on customers. Its not a bad job for a high school or college student. They just have to work their schedule. Pretty fucking simple. Want a day off? Ask for it.

I know what your saying but just remember these kids don't take your job seriously as i assume it's minimum wage for such an easy job. They just want to party and enjoy the summer. You are just a means to an end like it or not. This isn't their career so they aren't going to take it seriously. I was the same way at their age and now i'm an excellent worker i must say. It comes with age and responsibility.

First of all, I am the owner.
Second I am well liked by my employees. I have many that return to work every season b/c I take good care of them with a bonus at the ens of the summer and I buy them all pizza every week.

And by the sounds of you I am sure I would not hire you for any job.
    Knucklehead

It sounds like there's some truth to what this guy was saying- whether or not your employees like you has nothing to do with whether or not you're a good manager. It sounds like a culture of under-performance has crept in to your US office, and that the bad experienced employees teach their bad practices to the new, impressionable employees.

If you're serious about the issue, then fire your under-performers, and tell the mid-performers to step up or they'll suffer the same. Give significant bonuses to your best performers. Lead by example. If you show that you take their performance seriously, then they'll respect you and work hard.

There's a plenty of management books on employee performance, like the following: http://www.amazon.com/Five-Principles-Corporate-Performance-Management/dp/0470009918/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215581660&sr=8-14
