So what's the difference between "emo" and "goth"

  • Goth is older - it generally has older people who are within the lifestyle.

Emo is more a music/fashion genre for preteen and teens. It's like Goth for kids whose parents still check their wardrobe, and give them an allowance.

I was considered Goth-like and sometimes am still classified in that genre, most Goths have a more literary/artistic bend and tend to dislike overly popular clothing choices...for example Hot Topic is more for Emo and goth wannabe's than for Goths themselves.

if there is a question on a personal basis you should check with a very simple quiz:

Do they know who Robert Smith is?
Can they name a popular Hedonist?
Are they able to recite at least ONE Lord Byron poem?
What do they think of Absinthe?

    :D

if they fail at any of the above questions - they are prolly emo or a very young Goth...someone who still has a brightly painted bedroom, and does not suffer their existence on this mortal coil...

    :D

    ;)

ugh, i think emos are whiny mummy's boys/girls with no actual problems, and with a very shitty taste in music. emo music is awful.

goths are people who like darkness, who are creative and truly troubled. who haven't fitted in with "normal" kids at the time of growing up

That's not really a huge problem.

The same could have and probably was said about grunge too.

    very true.

i have nothing against them, i used to be friends with an emo until i found he was cutting himself and on LSD every day.

i was talking about goths :) but it's ok, i can tolerate emos, they are not bad kids

Erm...i wasn't saying there is a problem

i would disagree about grunge, grunge was listened by scruffy looking kids who used to wear cheked shirts and jeans. grunge is cool.

another good song is Killing Joke - Love Like Blood

man, this makes me want to go to a place where they play only popular goth hits, with no industrial/techo shit that they do in clubs.

i think goth and metal are the only good generes that came out of the 80's i always forget them when i diss 80's for being the worst era in music
  • A goth wants to kill you.

An emo wants to kill himself.

Seriously though, it's interesting to see what each generation does to make themselves stand out. Whatever group it might be, it's all just kids trying to find their identity and fit in somewhere.
  • Yeah, emo is more about being sad and listening to shitty screamo bands or dashboard or that bullshit.

Goth is darker with evil undertones. They generally are more openminded to metal and suchm, but not by much.

I don't really know, because I'm an old hag, but when I think of emo kids, I think of kids cutting themselves and middle schoolish, and when I think of goth I think of devil worship :) and old men hitting on teen girls.

    (great band btw)

placebo are NOT goth. a little eyeliner and black clothing does not make one goth.

Because it all pretty much looks the same to me. I also realize as I'm 17 years out of high school now I'm no longer "with it", so excuse my possible ignorance. What is the difference between the two? I was in Upland, CA during the holidays and noticed about half the kids in the local Target were wearing tight jeans, mostly black clothes, and had the dyed hair hanging in the eyes oh so seductively. Is it more of an image than an actual music style, or is it both, like with goth?

Emo is a little red fluffy character off Sesame Street and Goth isn't.

Edit - Sorry Elmo is a little red fluffy character off Sesame Street.
