So what's the difference between "emo" and "goth"

Because it all pretty much looks the same to me. I also realize as I'm 17 years out of high school now I'm no longer "with it", so excuse my possible ignorance. What is the difference between the two? I was in Upland, CA during the holidays and noticed about half the kids in the local Target were wearing tight jeans, mostly black clothes, and had the dyed hair hanging in the eyes oh so seductively. Is it more of an image than an actual music style, or is it both, like with goth?

The way I see it, Emo is to Goth what Glam Rock is to Rock. Took the same basic premise and gave it a fashionable style and exaggerated the most defining features in a kind of tongue in cheek way.

ugh, i think emos are whiny mummy's boys/girls with no actual problems, and with a very shitty taste in music. emo music is awful.

goths are people who like darkness, who are creative and truly troubled. who haven't fitted in with "normal" kids at the time of growing up

Those 2 statements are totally interchangable.

This is an emo kid. Note the carefully tailored "misfit" look which really makes them as much a sheep as anyone else http://www.fashionshanty.com/images/emo/girls-emo-haircut.jpg

Goths, originally anyway, are generally more of a deviant subculture than a lame attempt to marry androgyny with mainstream pop-rock good charlotte-esque style sensibilities. As ridiculous as a lot of goth imagery is, emo (as it is now, it used to refer to a type of punk music in the 80s and early 90s which is far different from the music that is called emo now) is like a watered down, teen-friendly version.

Personally, I don't care what people look like. it essentially means nothing. I am 19 and therefore have friends and acquaintances that fit into both catagories and many others that fit into neither, like myself. Either way, it doesn't matter much.

maybe.....but goths are much more darker people inside and they have a lot of weird thoughts going through their head than your stylish emo....who probably spends more time making sure his/her hair looks just perfect ;)

still my respect goes out to goths. and i don't really like to see them be compared to emos
  • emo kids are depressed, they dress in tight clothing, sit in dark corners, and cut themselves while listening to crappy music.
while goths just try to portray an image of being into hardcore music and they try too hard to look gothic.

trust me on this- im still in high school i talk/see these people everyday.
its funny how they try to make there school uniforms look "gothic"

try to portray an image of being into hardcore music?? what do you define as hardcore, if you talking about metal then you're wrong

hehe, try too hard to look gothic? - this sentence looks like a nonsense to me.

To me, emo now is basically pop punk, it basically has nothing to do with the music that was originally called emo. Emo now is whiny, pretentious, pop punk. I really dont know the difference between goth and what was originally called emo music.

haha nahh deffinatly NOT metal. and goths deffinaition of hardcore music isnt the same as mine, i was just saying what i see and hear everyday.
  • Yeah, emo is more about being sad and listening to shitty screamo bands or dashboard or that bullshit.

Goth is darker with evil undertones. They generally are more openminded to metal and suchm, but not by much.

if you don't hear difference between goth and emo music, just say so. i with pleasure show you difference between two genres and i'm not even a goth!

yep, you have a point here. I think "screamo" describes their music well.

goths don't like to be judged and are open minded ( that's what they say ) but in actual honesty they are just as narrow minded.

The goth kids I knew in high school were into bands like NIN, Siouxie and the Banshees and The Cure, which I actually liked too (and I didn't even dress in all black to prove it - the nerve!). I guess maybe there were goth sub-divisions, the ones into death metal and then the ones into the Cure. Maybe those are the ones that kind of evolved (devolved?) into emo. That's my take anyway.

A band like The Cure, what would you consider them? Yes, I know they are about as popular of an example as there could be.

hey at least they are not the sort of people who go around terrorising neigbourhood, and not the sort of people idolising rap and what it stands for ( i.e life of drug dealing, pimping and police hating )

they are just they sort of kids who like to fantasize about death, have interest in art, and depressed every now and again.
