i've been hearing people say this lately and it bugs me to no end. the radio dj girl this morning must have said it 3 times in about 5 minutes, i couldn't take it.

i'm guessing it means "good for you". how did 'on' suddenly become interchangable with 'for'?

is this a british phrase?

  • 'Good on ya' is Aussie slang, basically for a job well done.

Good for you. Way to go. Congratulations. Etc.

And in typical aussie fashion, abbreviated down to " On ya!"...... we're a linguistically lazy bunch.
  • ah, thanks for the explaination.

it sounds cooler when you aussies say it, not meant for us yanks.

I disagree. We have our own unique language, which I truly hope we hold onto.

Yea, it's a bit like an aussie yelling " Motherfucker!"........ it just doesn't have the same ring to it as it does when a yank says it.

LOL, I was kinda joking. Being linguistically lazy is part of our own unique language too ... :P

Exactly! :D And for all that it appears lazy on the surface some of the terms and sayings really are quite clever and best of all, humorous. :D

In what context was it used? I've heard that used all my life in reference to clothing. "That shirt looks really good on you." How are you hearing it used?
"I'll ride the wave where it takes me.."

You know, I've noticed on the telly, foxtel anyway, that they voice over is trying to sound american. They do this promo for crap shows like Dog the Bounty hunter or some shit............... and call it Bad Ass saturday or Bad Ass tuesday or something. The voice over in an aussie, but he says Ass rather than arse...... shits me to no end!

the radio girl was talking to her sidekick and he said something about those people in georgia winning the $270M lotto and she said "good on them". i can't think of the other instances but she said it a couple more times.

it just made me throw up a little in my mouth.

Yeah, not sure what the deal is with telly lately. Seems that percentage of Aussie content deal is being very loosely applied. It's tiresome.
Much as shows that are really over the top Aussie, like Kath and Kim, make me cringe inwardly I can't help but be pleased that at least it's a change from endless CSI, Law & Order and all that other American rubbish we seem to be inundated with.
