Yeah, that battle has been done for a while.

Get yourself a Blu-ray and you'll be set for a while!

That said, I'm amazed how many Blu-ray options are at my local Blockbuster. There literally is an entire section for Blu, and I have to admit...I've become a snob. If I go there and can't get it in Blu, I get pissed off settling for the lesser DVD. :D

I am with you, although I rarely rent anyway.
PS3 upscales dvds and vids, which would be a whole lot better if my 60G's (this is the fourth console I've had) ports hadn't just died - which has absolutely nothing to do with the upscaling, of course.

170 fucking dollars to get this piece of crap's usb ports fixed. I bet a 60g will fetch a fair price on ebay...

All 4 ports stopped working? That's crazy!

Tell me about it. I take very good care of them, that's the worst part.
This will be the fifth ps3 (that's a 5, although the last console was fine - turns out the sixaxis controllers are garbage but they told me the system had a faulty antennae).

Two ports weren't working last week and the other two were acting pretty wonky. I shouldn't have formatted last night....

Damn! You've gone through a couple 360s too haven't you?
So they fixed the antenna and the controllers worked or the controllers were crap and they told you it was the antenna?

You're bad luck man! LOL :D

The controllers (all three) suck, the console was fine. I got a DS3 - problem solved.
360 has red lighted twice, but that is 'normal' :p
My first two PS3's (same store, same day, same batch I assume) were faulty out of the box, third was exchanged because of the controller problems, fourth has USB probs.
Maybe I treat it too good. I'll treat the next one like the glorified blu ray player it is and let you know.

First in line? Blu ray has been around for a while now. The prices of players and discs are coming down.

It is here to stay so if you want the best picture available then do just that...line up because you will be amazed!

Also, larger Blu discs are on the way (which can be read by standard Blu players). Recently a 500GB disc was created!!! Just think of how insane that is!!

Either way, you can't go wrong with Blu because it will be around for a while.
  • Here is a tip to save a lot of money w/ bluray ....buy the movies used. I got American Psycho, Devils Rejects,Training Day, and Full Metal Jacket together [used] for the same price I paid for No Country for old men, [new].
I really am holding off buying bluray movies because; I already own my favorite movies on DVD and most of them aren't too much of an "upgrade" and I used to have over 500 dvd movies and most all got sold for fractions of what I paid for them. I used to buy movies just to "have them". I was like my families free and private Blockbuster store. I am now VERY selective on new purchases.

Where do you tend to look for used BRDs? My Blockbusters and EBGames stores are the only places around I've found selling used BRDs and their prices used are more than most other places' prices new....

I generally wait for sales, but I get a few movies new just because I have no willpower.

I also find that the box sets are easily found a fair bit cheaper (new) on Ebay.
Singles too, but shipping costs usually kill the savings.

if I remember shipping at used amazon was the same across the board.(like 2-3$)

Sweet, I'll have to check that out!

I've pretty much stopped buying DVDs and if a movies comes out that I want to get I'll usually get it on BD. I'm not a fan of the price of most new Blu discs though. Some of them are just crazy expensive! I'll have to check out amazon, because I'm not going to spend $35 on one movie. That's nutty!

get 'em used....if you choose a decent seller you can't lose. The BR's I got were all mint and like $8-9. If I remember correctly, FMJ was still in shrink wrap.
I don't see too many new movies on the horizon worth $30 either.
I learned my lesson and movie "collecting" ........most only collect dust. My wife asked why I bought those BR movies saying that I have seen them a hundred times...that is the exact reason I bought them. I am still gonna get more of my favorites on BR but only after reading that it is worth upgrading them from DVD. While American Psycho looked nicer on BR, I wouldn't pay more than $10 for yet another copy of it.

Yeah, I can only see myself replacing my old DVDs if it's a sweet-ass movie that I love, or if there is a big upgrade in the conversion.
I have some older movies that will have very little difference on BD compared to DVD...that was due to the filming of the movie.

Movies that I don't have yet, and are new, etc. will be purchased on Blu though.

i know there are others...but I use this site for reviews http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/reviews.html

I will not be wasting my money buying any more disc-based media. I feel as if we are only a few years away from having everything on flash memory.

I know people who say the same thing about streaming media too.
Only a very, very small percentage of the people in this country have the means to stream true 1080p HD from the source without a hour+ lead-in buffer. That and people like owning media.
The problem now with flash memory is a) capacity b) $$ 32GB flash cards are expensive c) source downloads...are you going to download the file to the flash then put it in your TV, cable box, etc. that goes back to the bandwidth issue mentioned before. A 2.5 hour 1080p HD movie will take a long-ass time to d-load and if you aren't d-loading it directly to your flash, most people don't have the hdd capacity to temporarily hold/put on a full-length HD movie.

Blu-ray discs can be made dual (and in some cases quad-layered) now. That is a LOT of data, and the discs are "relatively" cheap.

I do think streaming tech, and flash transfers will be more available in the future, but not anytime soon.

Keep in mind that your PS3 will upscale those old DVD's anyway, the transfer to Blu Ray would have to be seriously kick ass to bother.
I have the Untouchables on both, but only because someone got me the BRD for my Bday.

What would the difefrence be ?

Regular Blu-Ray at Bestbuy is $299

The difference, mostly, is that your PS3 is more upgradable than most standalone blu ray players.
That is getting a little old though, any new standalone is probably just as good.
