The greatest footballer that ever lived? Yes IMO. Makes me laugh the amount of times he puts it on a plate for a team mate and they completely screw it up!
His free kicks were out of this world, the closest I have seen to him was Gianfranco Zola and guess who taught him how to take a free kick? Yeah you got it, Maradona.

The public FIFA vote suggests the public disagree with you. Diego won by twice as many votes as Pele and FIFA gave them both the award because they didn't see it coming and felt it was an insult to Pele.

Diego Armando Maradona is the best football player who ever lived. I only got the chance to watch him myself during the tail end of his career, being too young to have seen his heyday at the time but I've obviously watched back the 86 world cup and stuff. The best football player I have ever seen. It amuses me how English fans (not you obviously) tend to try to dispute that because of the Hand of God, as if he didn't score probably the best goal ever in the same match

I remember as a kid even after the hand of God everyone still wanted to be Maradona when we were playing footie and when asked who the best player in the world was you would still say Maradona.

We were pissed off about the hand of God ... but still thought he was amazing.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

yes, and the contacts with the mafia, the drug abuse, his support for Menem, etc...

Maybe it's just people my age then :) You guys were around to see the Hand of God. Ignorant english people of my age, including my friends and one of my brothers who identifies himself as english rather than scottish ( ) just call him a cheating prick and ignore the fact he was a genius.

His dribbling skills were ridiculous. Whether the finish was the best or not, that other goal against England, the "Goal of the Century" is technically the greatest sporting achievment I've ever seen.

ok.. politics aside.. he's the world's greatest ever footballer... no question.

is he an idiot who took too many drugs, shot journos, became a mafia showpiece, a man of questionable morals???? absolutely he is.. but he's also the greatest footballer ever.

Yeah, all of those affect how talented a footballer he was

Last time I checked, cocaine wasn't generally used as a performance enhancing drug in sports, it's used to get high. Any steroids he took were at the end of his career when he wasn't doing great anyway. Doesn't detract from his brilliance in any way.

Amazing skills alright, but I prefer my sporting champions to be a bit more honourable and upstanding.

Yeah, soccer players in the States get about as much press as chess players. Growing up, I couldn't name one soccer player.

And the one's I can name now are only from this thread.

I'm not fussed if he shoves anchors up camel's fudds... he's a footballing genius.

in one of those clips he does this thing where he kicks a ball about 30ft into the air vertically and lets it drop and kinda does the same thing again.

that is the very same thing that Gary Lineker once said was the greatest thing he saw him do on a football pitch... Lineker, Platini and Beckenbauer were just in awe ... lineker didnt even try it...

honestly try it... its nigh on impossible to kick a ball straight up into the air, let alone twice with half-volleys

if that description fitted Jimmy Page then would that make him any less talented on guitar?

a footballer can do what he wants off the pitch if he wants... just as genius musicians can as well.. as long as they produce the genius when its needed then whats the issue.

I find that weird. Ice Hockey doesn't exactly get press here but I know about Wayne Gretzky and I know Wilt Chamberlain and Shaq and Jordan from Basketball. I always assumed that everyone would know the greats like Maradona and Pele even Americans :)

Christ, Maradona was even in the world cup you guys hosted, although he was a shadow of his former self and coked up to the eyeballs.
