Sigh. I don't even know what to say anymore.

that thread was about mine, and anyone else's, bad day :o So maybe the topic had a little digression. why does everything and everyone get banned here for expressing opinions these days?!

And mods, don't ban me for this. I'm just expressing an opinion here, on the message board of a band who would agree with us having the ability to do so, such are their views on society. I just don't understand what is happening around here lately.

I made this thread because I have had a bad day, was hoping for some cheap sympathy from the lovely people on this board and did not expect to have to deal with this ridiculous new draconian atmosphere here. Now, if this is considered offensive or unacceptable then sorry, I'm just expressing myself. Ban me if you have to, I don't think I'm being out of line here. I enjoy this message board greatly and think the mods have done a good job over the years but it is becoming a site where the purpose of it's existence is being subverted. I don't think I'm saying anything that other people aren't thinking here.

Thanks in advance to Kat and Sea if they read this and sympathise in any way.

Hope you feel better man. I guess I kinda contributed to the closing of the other thread with my comment there at the end about the people in question. Sorry about that.

  • Not sure how many forums you've been active in, but I've been in a few, and this is probably the best one I've been on as far as the mods go. I think they're making a good effort not to let this forum become full of negative garbage like so many others are. Many people think the forum they post on is different and special, but when not moderated, they all become the same way: a few trolls pretty much take over and stir up so much negativity that it infects almost everyone to the point where every thread turns into a trail of personal attacks.

    Just my smelly opinion (_*_)

Oh I totally agree, that's why it bugs me :) I love this board and have spent many hours (far more than I care to calculate) perusing the threads here. I think the mods have generally been very good. I am an opinionated person and yet, in three whole years, I have only been banned once and for a mere 3 days. I just wish I didn't feel like I need to bite my tongue so much to ensure my record stays that way and I sure wish I didn't have to monitor the threads I start with such fascist militancy that the slightest digression must be checked, lest the thread gets deleted.

I know the board has a limited bandwidth etc and it is not suitable for chatting or whatever but I don't feel that that is what is being moderated here. I am not trying to be difficult or controversial here but either I and many others have become more difficult and inappropriate with our posts here or the board is changing. My gut instinct is that it's the latter :o

Thats a good opinion. The mods are just doing there jobs but there were no trolls in this case. :)

I'm sorry, but where I come from, it's not ok to say/write some of the stuff that people do around here without reprocussions. it's not my fault that people write these things on here, I just call it like I see it.

I'm getting reamed for no reason...again. The worst part is, you can't even tell anyone off. You have to sit there and read all this shit, and if you say anything you'll get banned.

  • i missed yout thread, so cannot comment on it directly. that said, i think it's simple. we agreed to follow certain guidelines/rules when we joined up. a BIG part of that is RESPECT. also, this is an all-ages forum, and the *offical* pearl jam board. meaning, this board is a representation of pearl jam. to me, that carries a lot of weight, and responsibility. they want to foster a particular environment here, welcoming, rather positive, respectful. doesn't mean people can't be negative, disagree, have heated debate. just means one needs to stay ON TOPIC, respectful in the manner in whcih they post. it really is NOT difficult, at all. there are plenty of other places out there in cyberspace to go and rant and say/do whatever...this just doesn't happen to be one of em. i agree with it, respect it...and am GLAD for it. when i want to say things i KNOW are inappropriate for this forum, i say them elsewhere.....even if simply in PMs. that's it.

The point is there was nothing disrespectful about my thread or plenty of others that have been deleted recently. It seems that if we even mention the moderation of this board then you can be sure that the thread mentioning it will go the same was as the others. I'm not saying that the thread that caused all the bother earlier didn't deserve to be closed but I'm not sure if it deserved banning for two people and it certainly didn't warrant the deletion of a thread about a totally different subject that happened to touch on that subject briefly.

That's all I'm saying. I respect the rules of the board entirely, or at least to the best of my ability, and if I overstep them then I apologise but I just find it increasingly hard to judge whether or not I am doing so these days.

as i said, i cannot even weigh in with an opinion on your specific thread. all i can say is more than likely..in some fashion...it must've violated some rules. did it veer completely off-topic? inappropriate? any disrespect? any/all of the above can cause a thread lock/deletion. c'est la vie.

But it can be assumed that where you come from it's perfectly acceptable to completely change a thread's topic to personally attack a man who was simply asking for help. I guess where you come from it's perfectly okay to call someone a sexist and tell him to go get therapy for no good reason. All this without being provoked in any way and yet no reprocussions for these malicious acts..

    i know....i just couldn't resist.

just sayin, was not the first o be *malicious*....probably not the last. and i don't even know if i'd say malicious really. misguided, incorrect...or just skewed personal opinion? all may fit. point is, while perhaps a bit over-the-line....*technically*...the posts followed the rules in overall respect, although definitely OFF-topic....but again, not my call to make.

i don't think anyone would say/think that this, or anywhere for that matter...is handled 100% evenly/fairly ALL the time. i do think they really TRY to though, and more often than not...really is for the greater good of this little pj cyber community.

as someone else mentioned, i have been to a few other boards as well, tho not often once AET came back :D...and they had WAY more mods, and way, way, waaayyyyy more uneven handling of posts/threads/members. whatever. it really IS just a message board. i think it's rather easy, and also quite open......but evidently others do not feel the same. differing persepctives to be sure. i overall truly appreciate the environment here and am glad there is/are some to try and maintain it, otherwise i think this board would turn to utter chaos/shite. perhaps some would like that. i would not. so for that, i am happy for how it's maintained, flaws and all. :)

I know you feel it's the latter, but more than likely it is the former. I'm not saying you've become more inappropriate, but typically that is what happens when a forum gets lots of regulars who post a lot. Look at people with very few posts: they're typically more polite and respectful. Then look at the people with the most posts who've been using the forum for a long time: they're typically the opposite. They usually stop caring about the rules as much, make more inappropriate jokes, start acting like they're part owners of the forum, etc. It's a common thing that happens on every forum I've been on. The older the forum is, the more intervention you'll typically see from its moderators.

Please note, I'm saying this is TYPICALLY the case...it doesn't mean everyone on this forum with more than 10000 posts is a jerk and everyone with less than 100 is nice.

that and the fact that overall i think the mods are kind/generous, they don't want to permanetly ban people...so they give chance after chance after chance. for some, they adapt/learn...for others, it simply emboldens em...and others simply don't care. :p besides, how many ghosts from christmases past are floating about? haha.

I'm not upset :p I just find it annoying when you are in the middle of some discussion and can't finish what you were saying because suddenly the thread is gone. I wasn't claiming ownership of threads either, I just meant ones that i've started.

As for the thing about regular members, this is probably true to an extent. There are just as many new people that don't last a second though because they have no respect for any of the people here etc and they get banned. Whether or not a person with 10000+ posts might think they can say what they want and won't be justly chastised, the reason they might expect that is because they don't expect to be taken seriously. I wonder just how many arguments of that type yesterday or worse between those two have occurred over the years... probably quite a lot :)

I don't think it's a question of newbies, oldsters and inbetweeners... it's a question of personal manners, tempers, views, etc. Nothing to do with how long one has been on the board, all to do with the individual.

Now I don't know who has been banned, but I'm guessing it was for personal attacks or saying quite offending things (which is usually the case).
