Yeah, The Band is a top-5 for me. I love when people finally see this - it's like making a pilgrimage. Everything they've written is awesome - it's a shame half of them are dead. Levon looks ooooold as shit now.
  • My dad took me to see it in NY when it opened in the 70's. I still remember the audience and the size of the theater. They were huge back then. A lot of funny smells an 11 year old should not know :D.

My wife's favorite rock album. Play it all the time.

its a fucking awesome DVD... and its only about £5.

is this you hinting for your Secret Santa hells ;):p
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Levon still does this cool thing up in the sticks of New York I think called "Levon's Midnight Ramble." Actually I think it's in Woodstock. It's at his actual house and it's either in his studio or outside and it's pretty much a show for any and everyone. Big names sometimes pop up like I know Tom Petty and Elvis Costello have played it before. It's a pretty cool concept. I know he used to let people camp outside his place, but I don't know if he has recently.

It's fucking brilliant. You need to hear Music from Big Pink and their self-titled. Also, this is my favourite song, written by Richard Manuel (RIP) and Dylan. If I recall correctly, they didn't play it on The Last Waltz.

I prefer the version with Dylan on vocals from the Dylan and the Band Basement tapes album.

I watched it at the same time as Hells :) ... ordered it from Play last week and it's in their 2 dvds for £10 so I grabbed a Bill Hicks one at the same time :D ... now I just have to wait for them to arrive :o
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

I think I may have invented the perfect night in. I was in need of a quiet weekend so maybe I should go shopping for supplies and just veg in front of the TV.

*hopes the dvds arrive before the weekend*

They should do. Play is usually pretty quick, although two items arrived for me today from an order I placed last week, even though another item in the order arrived the next day

Anyway, it does sound like the perfect night in :) I dunno about a quiet weekend though, not watching Bill :o

Thanks for pointing the way... I just ordered it for 5.99 off play. Didn't see anything else on the 2 for 10 that I wanted so left it at that :)

More people should watch this movie/concert.

It's one of the all-time best.

    Glad you discovered it. :D
  • Garth, Rick, Richard and Robbie were all born in Southwestern Ontario my stomping grounds....glad to see The Band still turning on new fans after all these years........
    Peace,

Love this and have it on DVD.

I always thought the story Scorsasee tells about how they had to image edit the large chunk of powder on Neil Young's nose was funny as he was backstage partying before he came out to play helpless.

Just remembered that - pretty ridiculous.

Not sure why they bothered. Scorcese himself was a major coke addict at the time so I doubt he was insistent on it :o

Don't forget too get up real close to Neil when he is on stage and check out the blow up his nose.
You've changed your place in this world!

Nothin wrong with a little "Coke nose" now and again.
  • The Diamond song, the Van Morrison strut off stage, 'Evangeline', Scorcese's direction, the interviews, the last waltz itself for the credits... it's all genius and quite simply the best rock DVD of all time.

They were the guys playing with Dylan when he went electric.
Elton John wrote a song about Levon Holm.
Robbie Robertson did the music for The Colour Of Money and other stuff.
You mentioned their influence and I think that very few people realise how much this band meant. They were at the epicentre of 60 and 70's rock.

    And that's an understatement.
  • And that's an understatement.

Understatement, overstatement, it's certainly a statement, but one I'll stick by!

The thing I love most about the Band is how many stories are associated to them. They really flew by the seat of their pants.

One of my favourite stories is how they wanted the worst photographer in America for the Big Pink photos, because all the other groups out there were hiring professionals to make them look better. Needless to say, the guy became big after that album and one of the most sought after photographers in rock n' roll.
we're all going to the same place...
  • I'd love to hear a PJ cover of a Band song live, too. Any ideas? I'd go for This Wheels On Fire, The Weight or Tears Of Rage.

Well, I've seen "It Makes No Difference" with Eddie and MMJ.

Oh, and the album "Endless Highway" is a reeeeally good tribute album to The Band. Usually don't like tribute albums, but there's good artists on there.

Oh I should add that when Van joins them to play Caravan, that is one of the greatest performances of all time. He's quite clearly wasted and still gives one of the most amazing vocal performances I've ever heard.

All this talk has put me into a Band type of mood. Definitely listening to what I got on the ole' ipod on the way home from work. Oh, and "The Weight" covered by Duane Allman and Aretha Franklin is amazing too.

I think the Dr. John and Ronnie Hawkins parts are everything that sum up The Band to me. Git down wit yo bad self!

the only reason neil diamond was at the last waltz was cause robbie was working with him at the time. when robbie suggested perhaps removing muddy waters from the bill, levon went ballistic and wouldnt have a bar of it. he suggested in turn that perhaps some people were less deserving of being on the stage that night. and yes he wa speaking of neil diamond. whose presence to me was a bit of an anomaly.

watching the last waltz thrills me and at the same time makes me a little sad when i see richard.

they got it now robbie :)
