Stations Handling Pearl Jam Catalogue

How do most of your local alternative stations handle the PJ catalogue? Do they only play old PJ or do they play newer and lesser known songs? In San Francisco, Live 105 and the other alternative station, 104.9, only seem to play PJ songs from Ten or Vs. Today, I was driving from SF to LA and Live 105's 90's at Noon was about to come on. I figured I'd text in a request for Given To Fly, a song that I hadn't heard on Live 105 in 4 years. I figured I had a good chance they would play it since Madden is a PJ fan and loves the album, Yield. When 90's At Noon came on the second song played was Dissident. I was really pissed that Madden would replace my request for Given To Fly with Dissident. I almost texted the station that doing that sort of thing is bullshit. When the song ended, Madden came on and said "Right before the show started I got a text requesting this Pearl Jam song. I decided to give a double-dip of Pearl Jam, because more Pearl Jam is always better. It's Given To Fly." I was stoked. When the song ended Madden said, "I got a lot of feedback during the song thanking me for playing it. I believe it was Gavin in SF who requested it, so thanks man." I just wish that Live 105 would play more PJ songs from Vitalogy, Yield, No Code, the last three albums, and the rarities. If your local alt stations don't handle the PJ catalogue correctly tell them to straighten things out. I've already tried persuading Live 105. Some of you others in the Bay Area should try as well. Citizen Rick, you up for it?

    What's up Gavin!

I call those guys all the time to talk PJ with them.

What do you have in mind? I'm game.

BTW...Pete Marr...this weekend was saying how half of his music collection is taken up by PJ studio albums and Boots.

Did I miss something? I thought it was established that he only liked early PJ... and wasn't that big of a fan.

There's a mainstream rock station here (Power 97) that used to play a lot of Pearl Jam. Lochlin Cross was the music director and he's the guy who did the World Broadcast Premiere of "Pearl Jam". He's since moved onto bigger and better things (I assume) and the station suffers because of it. I hear Daughter/Elderly Woman/Even Flow and every once in a while they'll play Do The Evolution or Animal or something. Not a great range.

There's also a classic rock station (92 CITI FM) that plays Pearl Jam now. Most of it is Ten stuff. Black/Jeremy/Even Flow/Alive are most common but this station does a good job of playing similar music around Pearl Jam. For instance if they might play Even Flow after playing Wicked Garden and before playing Spoonman.

what kinds of PJ things do you discuss with Live 105 DJs? what do they say? i just want them to go deeper into the PJ catalogue. i've been trying to get them to play WMA for years with no results. i think Sad would be a great song for them to play. they always say they don't have access to those songs. how hard is it to download them???

I call on Mondays and Tuesdays (my days off) during 90's nooners either to request a PJ song or to thank them for playing one.

I always end up in a 2-3 minute conversation with the DJ about how great they were and still are...and they usually say that PJ's best quality nowadays is the live shows and the boots.

I think they are reluctant to play anything that isn't "mainstream" radio friendly (to them). The thing that gets me is...they all pretty much claim to be big fans...yet none of them are willing to play them in semi-regular rotation like they do the other bands of PJ's era (Nirvana, Soundgarden, AIC, Green Day, RHCP, NIN, Beasties, Rage, Weezer, Pumpkins...ect.).

BTW...All of a sudden Green Day's cover of the Beatles "Working Class Hero" plays relentlessly all day every day since it was released. Unlike "Reign or'e Me".

They tell me that Pearl Jam is by and large off the radar for today's young listeners (by their (PJ's) own doing)...but still a great band and one of the stations favorites.

the "alternative" station here plays corduroy a lot. and some stuff from 10. they played wws when it first came out. but that's about it. i think. i don't really know i try to avoid the radio:)

FM 94.9 in San Diego plays quite a bit of PJ. They broadcast the second Irvine show in '03, and they played Corduroy from it just a few days ago. Probably the rarest track I've heard them play was I Got Id, but they tend to go all over the catalog. They have a web feed, you can get it here:

    http://www.fm949sd.com/home/index.cfm

If you go to the Audio/Video section of the site, there is a interview with Stone about halfway down the page, and the bottom interview on the page is Robert Plant, and well worth a listen.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Ideally, they would play a broad spectrum of PJ's music, including the singles they used to play but don't anymore (I Got Id, Not for You, Wishlist, Given to Fly, Who You Are, Light Years, etc), plus lesser known tracks (WMA, In My Tree), and bootlegs (Sad). The thing that pisses me off is you have these DJs claiming to be huge PJ fans but they never play anything but Even Flow, Alive, or Corduroy. I think they get freaked out by the anti-PJ contingent and feel that if they play too much PJ some of their listeners will cause more of a raucous than the PJ Army (as Aaron Axelson us) for not playing enough PJ.

We have absolutely horrible radio stations. There is only one worth listening to. Lately I've noticed an incresed amount of Pearl Jam. By increased I mean 1 or two songs every 2 days. There was one day when they played 3 in one day. Of course they are the standards: Wishlist, Small Town, Last Kiss, You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, Betterman, Daughter, World Wide Suicide (once), Life Wasted (twice), but in the last two weeks during the All Request Nooner I heard Black and was completely in shock when someone requested Yellow Ledbetter. I didn't think people in my town had ever heard of that song!

working in radio i can tell you that most stations have just about every pearl jam song available but its up to the program director which songs they chose to play...here in St. Louis is pretty much the basic Ten/Vs songs and nothing that expands past that for the most part which sucks really bad.........i guess they chose the safe songs that most people have heard...WWS was the only song on the Avocado album that was played here

I've been living in Los Angeles since late May. My last experience listening to Live 105 was on the drive down when Madden played Given to Fly after I requested it during 90's at noon. Have they been playing much PJ since then? Rick, did you call in and tell them to handle the PJ catalogue properly?

In LA, I've only heard Pearl Jam played once. I haven't heard KROQ play PJ at all. The indie rock station, 103.1, played Given to Fly today. I was pleasantly surprised. 103.1 fm is an interesting station. They play bits of everything, just as long as it's not sell-out music/corporate trash. They play really good alternative-rock. Kind of reminds me of Live 105.

Just wanted an update on Live 105 and wanted to share how LA radio treats PJ. At least one of them played Given to Fly!

I life in SF too, but don't listen to too much radio...only kfog in the mornings usually. They play PJ often enough...but i've never heard any post-Vitalogy songs. It's always either Daughter or Betterman...and the occasional Black.

I'll have to give Live 105 a listen.

Edit: fyi...I used to live in Indianapolis and I had a good friend who lives there call me (this was maybe 2 years ago now) to tell my the local radio station, X103, was playing the entire catalog. They play every song A to Z (I'm pretty sure this was before the self-titled...or maybe it was a promo thing for it)....think it took an entire day or so.

Hey Gavin...I called Madden a few days after your first post during 90's nooners and he said the same old shit "great band but maybe past their prime" and how there isn't an overwhelming respons to play them like the other bands.

Meanwhile...he played the same Local H song that he plays every week and no PJ. I don't get it...even when they do promos for resurection sunday or a live promo for 90's nooners it seems like they mention every big band from that era other than PJ.

Even 104.9 an "alternative" station that has all these different promos that say we play all your favorite 90's music and mention all the staples...but not PJ.

I get so pissed...but what are you gonna do. There was a time when PJ played on all the different rock stations multiple times a day...and now pretty much nothing.

I guess this is what happens when you go into "hiding" for so many years.

Not to us of course...but to the general public.

Living in LA for the summer. Just got back to SF for my bro's bachelor party and was listening to Live 105. On the Madden Radio Disaster, Madden is doing some PJ Live at the Gorge promo. I guess he's gonna play a lot of songs during his show today from the Gorge CD and do some other things. I'm not gonna be able to listen to all of it but if Rick or any other Bay Area peeps are listening to it, fill me in on what went down. I'm surprised Live 105 is doing this, but maybe our calls into Madden and other DJs to show are support for PJ is paying off? KEEP IT UP BAY AREA PJ FANS! It seems like Madden is our biggest Pearl Jam ally at Live 105.

It figures...the minute I leave Live 105 is playing PJ. I think you're right Gavin...all of our calls are paying off.

was in South Lake Tahoe for my bro's bachelor party. they had some rock station that played Who You Are. here's a recap of PJ in Europe- from a series that the LA Weekly has been running: http://blogs.laweekly.com/play/?p=171
  • This past weekend 107.7 was having a "get a set" weekend (playing a set of songs from the same artist/group).

Saturday I heard (PM): Evenflow, WWS, and then.....Grievance (live)!

Sunday I heard (AM): Dissident, Betterman, and then ....Cropduster (live)!

I think the sets were requested or at least one of the songs for each set.

It was very wierd hearing Cropduster, and live at that, on the radio.

There is hope in the city by the bay!!!

BTW - For those not from the Bay area, 107.7 is one of the largest stations here and not some small station (like KFOG).

  • after playing cropduster (live) the dj said was a request by some girl in the East bay....I'm wondering if that person post here.

Is # 17 on Live 105 in SF. This was surprising considering after I emailed Aaron Axelson to play Far Behind he said they wouldn't be playing Eddie's solo shit because it was too folky and not alt-rock. Live 105 had a 90's at Noon show featuring the best soundtrack songs from the 90's and I requested State of Love and Trust. They played Screaming Trees instead.
  • Hard Sun is actually gaining strength at Alternative radio:

According to All Access, it's up 15 spots to #31 and had an increase of 138 spins last week.

I was gonna post about Hard Sun as well Gavin. I've been hearing it non-stop on Live 105.

Good for Ed. If they hurry up and bust out another album by the end of 2008...maybe they can take advantage of the momentum they are building (WWS and Hard Sun).

my local station http://www.q104.ca sucks big time. they play pearl jam very very rarly but when you go onto their website they have a pic of eddie on one of the banners. when pj came here they hardly even played them then. basically the only songs i get to hear are alive, jeremy and daughter. when there is a new album they play the first single then nothing eles. when binaural came out they played nais for about three weeks then never again. riot act we got i am mine for about the same and number 8 we got wws for a few weeks. they are strange though, twice they have played the entire boot from halifax and when there is a "world album premiere with catfish morgan" or whatever then they play that to. but most of the time...no love for pj from the q.
