Fortunately and unfortunately I do not have hair on my ass and I did not need to pull out the proverbial hair bc I let him go today, it was saddening but had to be done.

our policy at work is if your more than 10 minutes late , the timeclock wont let you in and you have to go to a manager to clock you in manually. everything gets documented and recorded. 3 times is a write-up, 3 write ups and your fired.

I wish we had that policy, I work for my Nation, a very small reservation of close to 300 people where pretty much everyone is related. Think of it as a different country.

. At least, at least, 25% of obesity is caused by genetic variation, more will be included as more evidence is revealed, but as of now, the public at large, views 100% of obesity as a personal choice. It serves their egotistical goals of self preservation and social status.

See whilst I do understand where you are coming from here, I think personal choice does play a massive role and shouldn't be underestimated. I see countless people at work who are over weight. They claim to have tried every diet going (and I'm sure they have), and you know 'obesity runs in the family so it's only to be expected' - then I see what they eat for their lunch. The simple truth is, that most people have absolutely no idea how the human body works. Most people act shocked and don't believe me when I tell them eating 5-6 smaller meals a day would help them drop weight. But the simple fact is, if you're fueling your body more often, it stimulates your metabolism and your body suddenly realises that it doesn;t need to cling on to every calorie you put in to it, because it knows it's going to get more fuel in a short while. That's what baffles me about people who skip breakfast - you're basically voluntarily slowing yout metabolism to a snails pace, guaranteeing you will store more fat from what you eat. Crazy!

Anyway, sorry to digress....to the OP, don't be so bloody mean! The guy's 19; was work your priority in life at that age?! It certainly wasn't mine. Try asking why he's late? Perhaps explain that it isn't really fair on all the other people who do manage to make it in on time. I gotta say that one common trait most managers seem to have, is that they are seriously lacking when it comes to people skills. Try communicating with people on a human level rather just a manager/employee level.

try cutting his hours... aren't there kids working for you that WANT more hours? I remember being a kid and wanting more hours of work to get more money.
This way.. you cut the slacker's hours and it gives you breathing room to hire someone else... time comes... cut the kid loose and let him know exactly why. Hopefully, he'll figure out that he has to get there on time for his next job.

I'm 15-20 mins late every day and about an hour late 1-2/month. But, I still meet my production goals so blah. Plus being on salary doesn't hurt.

The importance of punctuality really varies from job to job. For some jobs, the work is so menial that there is no other way to gauge an employee's performance.

Granted, meetings and such I am never late for. I would have just given the employee a half hour later start time. But, it really depends on the situation. It sounds like you would have done it another way if you could have.

You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.
