it's been at least a couple of years that he's put in so far for his training. he first faced ray mercer last june, defeating him by guillotine choke in the first round. it turned out later that there were some issues with the sanctioning of the event, so it doesn't show on his record.

so he's been competing in events for about a year and training at least twice as long as that. +1 on your thoughts about the cardio. he was growing accustomed to ending things in the first, i guess. ;)

+1 also to the lawler vs. smith match. i think i probably enjoyed the carano vs. young match a little more watching the show again, but smith vs. lawler definitely was a great battle. it's too bad it ended the way it did.

Oh that's right......I forgot he fought that long ago

You catch the WEC fights last night ?

Good night for the most part....Faber looked good.....Jens can take a punch and keep going....that dude has no quit in him

The Razor Rob McCullough fight was boring

yeah, the faber vs. pulver fight was great, especially for the first few rounds. miguel torres and yoshiro maeda put on quite a show as well. probably my favourite of last night.

rob's fight was pretty stale. you could tell he was really rusty and conservative after the loss to varner.

...oh, and you're right, jens has huge heart. i don't know how he made it to the end of the fight! :)

Kimbo ain't shit....that garbage they televised was ridiculous.
I'm the only Hell Mama ever raised.
  • some interesting follow up after the elite xc show on the weekend. personally, i didn't think there was any controversy about the young vs. carano stoppage, but i guess many people thought it should have continued. i agreed that the smith stoppage was ridiculous the way it was handled with the five minutes to recover confusion...it sounds like his vision took some time to come back, but he still should have had the five minutes...anyway, moot point i guess, as it sounds like he wouldn't have been able to continue.

anyway, i posted this in another thread, but thought i would post it here too in case anyone is interested.

5 Oz. Exclusive: Dr. Sherry Wulkan comments on Kaitlin Young and Scott Smith stoppages
    June 02, 2008
    by Sam Caplan

After reading our interview with New Jersey Athletic Control Board legal counsel Nick Lembo, Dr. Sherry Wulkan contacted the NJACB with additional comments via e-mail. The NJACB forwarded that e-mail to us with permission to publish it.

I am making that e-mail available here, but I wanted to add that 5 Oz. of Pain contacted both Kaitlin Young and Scott Smith to get their sides of the story. Young declined to comment on the record at this time while Smith was unavailable for comment.

    Here is Wulkan’s e-mail:

“When we saw Kaitlin in the cage, we were concerned about an orbital fracture. Both she and her corner were grateful that the fight was stopped and actually thanked us for stopping the fight. When she first returned to the dressing room, she said she wasn’t sure why the fight was stopped, but after looking in the mirror, she was glad we did. That is almost a quote verbatim. She said she was overwhelmed and that Carano definitely got the better of her on this occasion. I don’t read the blogs [Editor’s Note: Dr. Wulkan is referring to an alleged post by Kaitlin Young on FighterGirls.com, however, the post has yet to be verified as actually being authored by Young herself], but perhaps she was not well reviewed and this prompted the response you forwarded.

“We did not stop the fight because it looked ugly or because she was a woman, but because she had taken some major abuse, and because we were afraid she had a fracture. The risks of orbital fractures are well known to ringside physicians.

“Her response seems more like a vendetta for not being invited to the interviews . It’s a shame, because she presented herself very professionally both before and after the fight on fight night.

“As a follow up, Drago [editor’s note: Pete Sell] told me that Smith said he still was seeing double and triple 15-20 minutes after returning to the locker room. His corner was grateful we made the call we did. I want to know who told the press we didn’t pick up the foot injury at the time it happened. That’s just not precise reporting. I’m glad you cleared that up. I think it’s amazing that Smith himself, although initially disappointed, currently has no problem with the decision; he knows we’re professional and we have both their short term and long term interests at heart. At no time did we hear a complaint from Smith’s corner, so why are the blogs so insistent that an injustice was served? Besides, the rematch will prove to be a war, especially with two healthy fighters.”

    It is a real job.

They train year round for a few fights a year. They get paid good money for 15 minutes of work.

Sounds like a solid gig to me.

So far Kimbo hasn't proved shit. He has fought three opponents and none of them where top MMA fighters. That fight should have never been top billing, and under card at most. If not for the Carano/Young and Lawler/Smith fight the whole event would have been a wash. I would love to see Kimbo up against someone like Tim Sylvia or Randy Couture. He wouldn't stand a chance in the ring up against anyone of that caliber. As someone who has trained for several years in both Mui Thai and Jui Jitsu I look at EliteXC's attempts to turn a street thug into the face of MMA as a disgrace.

Many of these people hold real jobs besides training months for these fights.

  • That show just was the nail in the coffin for whatever "off brand" fighting league that was.

Come on... a couple of girls goin at it, a fight stopped inappropriately, a guy like KIMBO Slice who is a joke (althought I wouldn't say that to his face), its just not on the same level as UFC.

Kimbo doesn't have what it takes, he should stick with street fighting. In the UFC he will always get out-wrestled.

the women's match was actually an excellent fight. scott smith and robbie lawler put on quite a show, but i think people were really surprised by how good carano vs. young was.

you may not be a fan of women's mixed martial arts, but there are quite a few very talented fighters out there. they often end up being more technical than the men. they're usually more flexible, which results in more scrambles and unusual submission positions for jiu-jitsu. they also rarely have a "feeling out" process at the beginning of a match.

if you haven't seen any women's matches before, give them a chance sometime. people like gina carano, amanda buckner, shayna baszler, tara larosa, megumi fujii, satoko shinashi, etc. can actually fight a lot better than many of their male counterparts.
