i agree. pretty lame show. and it went on too long.0 -

I totally agree. The fighter's entrances were done almost exactly how WWE handles their wrestlers' entrances. I mean, fireworks? Pyro? Was that really necessary? And the cheerleaders were a joke too. Makes you wonder if the execs at CBS think that their primary competition is pro wrestling. Too much talking too. What's next? Some backstage skits and vignettes?
UFC is light years better.
I'd even prefer watching WEC on Vs. right now when compared to what CBS gave us last night.
The first couple fights really sucked. The Gina Carano / Kaitlin Young bout was terrific. If the CBS / Elite XC partnership is going to continue, I think they would be better off promoting Carano more than Kimbo.
This was the first time I saw Kimbo fight. The guy is a beast and has some really impressive hands, but it was easy to tell how green he is. He looked absolutely lost on the ground, and really just relies on strength and power rather than technique. Hey, I recognize he's still new to MMA fighting, but the way that the media has hyped this guy, I expected a more well-rounded fighter.0 -
that ref stopped all three fights too early. I am sure the network didn't want too much blood the first time. In addition with the investment into Kimbo there was no way they would risk going to the judges, that ref had instructions I am sure, if it ever looks close call it. The Lawler fight same thing, he is one of their biggest names they can't him lose the first time out there. That was fight of the night for sure
seeing that dudes ears every time he got hit flail in the air was funny!
yeah announcers SUCKED big time I felt like I was watching TNA. Way too much fluff too, just let em fight0 -
hrd2imgn wrote:that ref stopped all three fights too early.
The ref doesn't stop all the fights, the doctor can make the call to stop the fight if they feel the fighter is at risk.

Phantom Pain wrote:How long has Kimbo been training in MMA ? I think it's like 4-5 months ?
He's not going to be a great fighter overnight, obviously an experienced UFC fighter would take him out easily
He needs more training and better cardio
Best fight of the night I thought was the Lawler fight
Here is a story about Gina Carano in case anyone didn't see it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j5Gb3qHl70&feature=email
it's been at least a couple of years that he's put in so far for his training. he first faced ray mercer last june, defeating him by guillotine choke in the first round. it turned out later that there were some issues with the sanctioning of the event, so it doesn't show on his record.
so he's been competing in events for about a year and training at least twice as long as that. +1 on your thoughts about the cardio. he was growing accustomed to ending things in the first, i guess.
+1 also to the lawler vs. smith match. i think i probably enjoyed the carano vs. young match a little more watching the show again, but smith vs. lawler definitely was a great battle. it's too bad it ended the way it did.0 -

Yeah, apparently he was a star football player and I guess after Hurricane Andrew the school's football program ended for a while and his path changed.
I saw the YouTube footage of this guy about a year ago and had no idea until a couple of weeks ago that he was trying to get into MMA. He looked pretty damn humbled at the end of that fight last night. You could tell he had never been in a fight with someone before that could push him that hard. He is so far below the other fighters in skill and training, but makes up for it in toughness and strength. I would love to see him fight someone really good just to cool down some of the hype.Brian0 -

you think that was bothersome....you should see Genki Sudo's entance tapes from K-1 and Pride....somje cool stuff....and this guy could fight his ass off until he retired

That show just was the nail in the coffin for whatever "off brand" fighting league that was.
Come on... a couple of girls goin at it, a fight stopped inappropriately, a guy like KIMBO Slice who is a joke (althought I wouldn't say that to his face), its just not on the same level as UFC.
Kimbo doesn't have what it takes, he should stick with street fighting. In the UFC he will always get out-wrestled.Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.0 -

as you can see by my signature, i am a bit of a genki fan.
it's funny, we were just talking about genki last month prior to the last ufc event and i posted some of his ring entrances. i think my favourites were the butterbean entrance with the baseball team "peace" and the cheerleaders, and the kid yamamoto match entrance at K-1. although...there are so many it's hard to decide!thanks for posting this, though. it's always amazing to watch, considering he puts the extensive chereography together in addition to preparing for the fight. it's hard to believe after watching him come out to the ring that he was going into an mma match!
it's too bad his appearances in the ufc weren't well recieved by the fans. they didn't quite get the entrances and his style, i don't think. then again, they were also toned way down for the smaller stage too...
anyway, i just watched a documentary special (as far as i know it's called genki sudo : a documentary special...japanese with english subtitles) on genki, post-retirement. it's quite good if you get a chance to watch it, and has extras of a simulation mma match he did with caol uno and his legendary westside submissions tournament "clinic".
i miss genki and his entrances!0 -

yeah, the faber vs. pulver fight was great, especially for the first few rounds. miguel torres and yoshiro maeda put on quite a show as well. probably my favourite of last night.
rob's fight was pretty stale. you could tell he was really rusty and conservative after the loss to varner.
...oh, and you're right, jens has huge heart. i don't know how he made it to the end of the fight!0 -
Kimbo ain't shit....that garbage they televised was ridiculous.I'm the only Hell Mama ever raised.0

some interesting follow up after the elite xc show on the weekend. personally, i didn't think there was any controversy about the young vs. carano stoppage, but i guess many people thought it should have continued. i agreed that the smith stoppage was ridiculous the way it was handled with the five minutes to recover confusion...it sounds like his vision took some time to come back, but he still should have had the five minutes...anyway, moot point i guess, as it sounds like he wouldn't have been able to continue.
anyway, i posted this in another thread, but thought i would post it here too in case anyone is interested.
5 Oz. Exclusive: Dr. Sherry Wulkan comments on Kaitlin Young and Scott Smith stoppages
June 02, 2008
by Sam Caplan
After reading our interview with New Jersey Athletic Control Board legal counsel Nick Lembo, Dr. Sherry Wulkan contacted the NJACB with additional comments via e-mail. The NJACB forwarded that e-mail to us with permission to publish it.
I am making that e-mail available here, but I wanted to add that 5 Oz. of Pain contacted both Kaitlin Young and Scott Smith to get their sides of the story. Young declined to comment on the record at this time while Smith was unavailable for comment.
Here is Wulkan’s e-mail:
“When we saw Kaitlin in the cage, we were concerned about an orbital fracture. Both she and her corner were grateful that the fight was stopped and actually thanked us for stopping the fight. When she first returned to the dressing room, she said she wasn’t sure why the fight was stopped, but after looking in the mirror, she was glad we did. That is almost a quote verbatim. She said she was overwhelmed and that Carano definitely got the better of her on this occasion. I don’t read the blogs [Editor’s Note: Dr. Wulkan is referring to an alleged post by Kaitlin Young on FighterGirls.com, however, the post has yet to be verified as actually being authored by Young herself], but perhaps she was not well reviewed and this prompted the response you forwarded.
“We did not stop the fight because it looked ugly or because she was a woman, but because she had taken some major abuse, and because we were afraid she had a fracture. The risks of orbital fractures are well known to ringside physicians.
“Her response seems more like a vendetta for not being invited to the interviews . It’s a shame, because she presented herself very professionally both before and after the fight on fight night.
“As a follow up, Drago [editor’s note: Pete Sell] told me that Smith said he still was seeing double and triple 15-20 minutes after returning to the locker room. His corner was grateful we made the call we did. I want to know who told the press we didn’t pick up the foot injury at the time it happened. That’s just not precise reporting. I’m glad you cleared that up. I think it’s amazing that Smith himself, although initially disappointed, currently has no problem with the decision; he knows we’re professional and we have both their short term and long term interests at heart. At no time did we hear a complaint from Smith’s corner, so why are the blogs so insistent that an injustice was served? Besides, the rematch will prove to be a war, especially with two healthy fighters.”

It is a real job.
They train year round for a few fights a year. They get paid good money for 15 minutes of work.
Sounds like a solid gig to me.

So far Kimbo hasn't proved shit. He has fought three opponents and none of them where top MMA fighters. That fight should have never been top billing, and under card at most. If not for the Carano/Young and Lawler/Smith fight the whole event would have been a wash. I would love to see Kimbo up against someone like Tim Sylvia or Randy Couture. He wouldn't stand a chance in the ring up against anyone of that caliber. As someone who has trained for several years in both Mui Thai and Jui Jitsu I look at EliteXC's attempts to turn a street thug into the face of MMA as a disgrace."When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." - Ron Paul0

the women's match was actually an excellent fight. scott smith and robbie lawler put on quite a show, but i think people were really surprised by how good carano vs. young was.
you may not be a fan of women's mixed martial arts, but there are quite a few very talented fighters out there. they often end up being more technical than the men. they're usually more flexible, which results in more scrambles and unusual submission positions for jiu-jitsu. they also rarely have a "feeling out" process at the beginning of a match.
if you haven't seen any women's matches before, give them a chance sometime. people like gina carano, amanda buckner, shayna baszler, tara larosa, megumi fujii, satoko shinashi, etc. can actually fight a lot better than many of their male counterparts.0
