Accommodation Recommendations for LA & Van

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a few good hotels or hostels in Los Angeles and Vancouver please?

I don't really need to be with the "hip and happening" crowd, but I would prefer something central, that is clean, with aircon and a fridge in the room would be good.

There are hoards to choose from on the internet but I'd really like to hear if anyone has any positive feedback or absolute rat holes I need to stay away from. :)

Oh and I don't want to break the bank! :)
NOPE!!!

pick a part of L.A you want to stay in and then we go from there! Or are you looking to stay in the Orange County/disneyland area? Figure out what you want to do here and we'll find u a nice place thats reasonable!

    Thanks Sen. :)

I have no idea where I want to stay. I figure walking distance to a lot of things but I really don't know the city very well at all and all this trawling the internet is just confusing me!:o

I would like to see the Walk of Fame, a movie studio, The Kodak Theatre, the Theatre district and maybe Disneyland depending on how I'm feeling. Mostly I have to fly into LA to get to anywhere so I figured I should take a look around but mostly I just wanna catch up with you guys if I can. Do I sound vague? :o:D

ok, the kodak theatre, walk of fame, sunset blvd, etc, are all in the L.A area. Hollywood if you will. Disneyland, Knotts, The beaches, Dirty Frank shows, are all in Orange County area. If you are renting a car, you can stay in OC and DRIVE to hollywood for the day and see it ALL. Theres so much to do out here its ridiculous. I would suggest you stay somewhere by the beach (if u like that) in the o.c. Not FANCY o.c, but o.c. And we are everywhere so wherever you stay, we'll find you!

    No car. :)

I found a few hostels/hotels/motels in the Hollywood area that sound ok although it sounds really busy.

And another hotel that sounds ok in Downtown?

Figure I'll get the shuttle from LAX to the hotel and back and a cab to wherever I'm catching up with you guys and hoof it or get buses for everything else. I'm only gonna be there a couple of days so no point getting a car really.

Not that I can even find a bloody map at this point!

If I'm looking at Orange County what towns am I looking for?

it may be just me but i say stay away from hostels & motels in hollywood area. They arent very nice. And its early, you have plenty oftime to look!!!! As far as the car.....its a MUST for everything you wanna see and do! Orange county is 45 minutes from hollywood!!! THERE WILL BE NO HOOFING!!!! just ask helen about that ;)

This isn't Melbourne, Jeanie. Public transport doesn't really exist in LA :)

On Hostelworld the one that seems to most correspond to your needs seems to be Orange Drive Manor Hostel. http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/OrangeDriveManorHostel-LosAngeles-838

Well a kind bloke has offered to drive me about but I want to make sure if it's not convenient for him at the time that I can still be somewhere where I can get about myself. I don't need to see everything but I don't wanna be stuck staring at the hotel room walls for 3 days either. :D

What have you folk got against walking anyway? :p

I found this place called The Vibe Hotel that seems ok and The Hollywood Hostel which is right near the Walk which looks alright but the private rooms look about the size of a shoebox. I've stayed in some pretty dodgy hostels over the years, how bad can they be in LA? :D

Thanks Hinny. :) I've actually shortlisted that one, do you know it at all?

It looks ok, I'm just not committed to it yet.

I also found The Cecil Hotel in Dowtown that looks like it might be ok, I'm just not sure if that's the area I want to set up camp in or not.

Not at all. But I've learnt to trust hostelworld above all other sources, the one set of ratings that never fails me when it comes to budget accom. Seems like the best you can do if you're fine with hostels.

Yeah, it's been a while since I was with YHA and hostelling international and the last time I was booking hostel accommodation the internet wasn't as big as it is now, so I did a lot from the accommodation guides. It's good to be able to check them out on the web, but I do know that things can get ugly sometimes, so I was hoping people had stayed in some of the places. I'm not much fussed if it's a hostel or a hotel, I just don't want to spend a fortune on that part of the trip. I feel better for knowing you have had positive things to say about hostelworld. Thanks. :)

If I'm back in Canada by then I'd love to meet up. However, I'm on the Island, in Victoria, but I could come over to the mainland for a day. I'll bring the truck and we could drive around and maybe meet some other Jammers.

    Cheers!

The Cecil is on top of a well known strip club, with a cool little live blues club right next door. They call this area the entertainment district, its ok during the day but at night thier are a lot of clubs on this strip and they are open late so if you are planning on getting a long nights rest don't bank on it. As it can be quite noisy. My recommendation would be to stay a couple of blocks away, that way your still close to the action, but you don't have to listen to the drunken brawling at 3:00AM.

I got a really good deal at the Radisson for 7/10-7-13, only about $89.99 a night or so, but it was for online booking only

Are you referring to Hotel Cecil in Los Angeles?

If so, it gets real dodgy there at night....imagine a Charles Bukowski novel...that kind of place!

No I'm pretty sure she is talking about the one in Vancouver and as I said in my previous post its not the greast spot to either.

Yep the one in Vancouver. Although I would stay at the Vancouver Cecil before the one here in Calgary  Someone told me they are owned by the same guy... I have heard of the Hiltons but just some guy running sketchy hotels... wtf?!!

Hmmm maybe she did mean the one in LA and I clearly shouldn't be commenting on a hotel I have never seen :o but since you think it is dodgy, JJJ then yes perhaps it is to be avoided.

My advice would be to get a hotel/motel in the Santa Monica area. There's tons of touristy shit to do in Santa Monica (promenade, pier, beach) and it's walking distance to Venice Beach which is another big tourist attraction. Then you can take a cab into Hollywood and see all that shit and come back to beautiful Santa Monica without having to stay in some seedy Hollywood motel.

As far as downtown.. not much to do there, I wouldn't go there... and definitely stay away from the eastern side of downtown because it's full of homeless guys and herion addicts looking to mug you or worse:eek:

I'll look into it and see if I can find you some good motel deals that are safe, but still in a good spot. Believe me and SEN when we say that dangerous out here is a LOT more dangerous than probably anything you'll encounter in Australia!
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.
