for as much hype as this gets they have really only won one championship, Detroit can actually overtake Boston this year with their 2 good teams (Pistons and Red Wings) and still have 2 not so good teams (Tigers and Lions). There will be no hype like there was for Boston though

I get the point, but that is wild to the point of absurdity. Picking on 2 drunk guys, a punk band, and sports talk radio listeners is just fish in a Barell.

The guy glosses over a million points and doesn't back up many of his own. Good feel good article fopr Boston haters, but you alreqady knew you hated us right?

When Cleveland teams start winning some rings then you can say something about Boston. ;)

BTW, The 3 Super Bowl rings still counts! :p

i was in montreal two summers ago and all i hear is about 6 guys wearing red sox gear shouting "let's go red sox" down the streets ... yeah - that's a lovable attribute ...

anyhoo - boston is a rival city for mine ... as much as i loathe them to win - you can't deny the success as a sports city ...

success even if they cheated for 3 of their championships?

I don't think it's the Red Sox or the Celtics that have turned the fans around here arrogant. That lies with the Pats. The Pats had already cashed in 2 and were on their way to a 3rd when the Sox cashed it in back in 04. Sox fans have learned to deal with the ups and downs knowing that it'll even out. Pats fans are a very different breed. They really feel that every loss is an act of God.

I was sitting around talking to a couple of Pats fans the other day and they still are saying, "well is Samuel could catch a ball we would have won." Well he didn't and they lost. That's what happens. Not every bounce can go your way.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

    I would say "band-wagon jumpers"

Did you see all these Red Sox nation BS before they won in 2004? Could any of them name all the numbers retired in their haloed Fenway Park? And the Celtics?? HA!! That freaking cracks me up! Every band-wagon jumper fan of the suddenly good Celtics is so full of crap. Were you a fan when they lost 18 in a row?

You're totally right about the Celtics bandwagon jumping. They were horrible (with the exception of the playoff run in 2002). I wouldn't pay to see that. I admit it.

But you're wrong about the Sox fanbase. Even though RS Nation grew in 2004, that fanbase had been swelling since they got Pedro in the late 90s. It didn't take the championship for the Sox to be popular.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

I've been a city of Boston fan since 1972, in fact I was so use to losing by the lovable Patriots (Grogan, Vataha, John *Hog* Hannah, Sam *The Bam* Cunningham) and Red Sox that sort of just liked or got use to it back then.

Now I do see a ton of bandwagoners as you call it but I loved the Briuns/Celtics whether they won or not. Even more so when they were losers cause nobody paid them ANY attention then. I tried to give them as much as I could unlike some who thought of them as the stuff you try to scrape off the bottom of your shoe.

If they're from Boston I'm rooting for em especially after you've met and chatted with a man like Arnold *Red* Auerbach.

The Red Sox owners have used the momentum of the 2004 WS to appeal to the "Pink Hats" i.e. women. Women who will spend a lot of money.

Put it this way, I love the Sox but I will not go to Fenway because of the price of everything and the fact that my 6 foot 9 body will not fit into the seats.

I went to a game a few weeks back and who got me the tickets.....my girlfriend. I'd say that the stadium was about 40-45% female. I can remember when it was about 80-20 male.

The owners of the Red Sox must look into every avenue to generate revenue for the ball club. With the whole Red Sox nation thing they're just doing what they should be doing. It just happened to coincide with 2 titles in 4 years.

Also Fenway did sell out, more often than not, before the whole Red Sox nation thing.

No matter how many Super Bowls the Pats win the Sox will always be #1 up here.

There is always going to be band wagon jumpers, and when the successful team goes through a rough patch, it's those band wagon jumpers that complain the loudest.

I think Boston has so many of these wagon jumpers right now because of being a large market, and fulfilling the need many sports fans love-winning and being the underdog.

They could win 10 SB's and football being the #1 sport the Red Sox will always be #1 in New England period.

Been a season ticket holder at fenway since i got out of school in 2000, you want an easy way to tell if a sox fan is bandwagon or not, ask them what year they started playing Sweet Caroline in the 8th, if they say anything other than 2003 they are on the bandwagon. Ah the good ol days when they didnt play that song at that time and that stupid Tessie as well.

Nothing drives me more crazy than the people that want to do the wave when it's a close game in an important situation.

I agree on the Red Sox Nation stuff as well, I used to use the term back in the day but once the Red Sox actually ran with it and started selling it, that name now turns my stomach. Crazy me, i thought watching the games was proof that i was a fan, didn't need a stupid ID card.

I will give these owners a lot of credit though, they are trying to crank out as much $$$ as they can from the 2nd smallest stadium in baseball. Also when any team wins the bandwagon usually follows, it was the same when the Yankees were winning in the 90's, same with the Bulls of the 90's as well. It's just goes with the territory. It's like when you deal with the devil to you live forever he puts you in a coma.

one last funny story in December of 04 I was at the gym and this guy actually complained and said "the red sox will never win unless they start playing small ball" to which I couldnt help but respond "didn't they just win the world series?"

Most long time fans don't buy into this RS stuff, I certainly don't. However it is a great marketing tool to bring as many dollars apossible to keep this payroll afloat.

I will admit that the Pats are the most hated team in sports.

The Yankees are the still the most hated team in baseball.
