for me, it was a tie: Dan Marino and Scottie Pippen. I used to fucking love these guys. Wasn't life so great when you young? I used to go to bed thinking "Awesome, Pippen had a triple-double tonight" and now I go to bed thinking "fuck, my rent's due in three days."

Kristi Yamaguchi and Ken Griffey, Jr. were my two faves.

I'm happy to report that baseball has replaced figure skating as my favorite sport.

You can all stop judging me now. :)

Depends on what your definition of "young" is. If it's up to senior year of HS, it expands my list. I had a lot of favorites.

Michael Jordan was my man from the moment he stepped on an NBA court. Favorite all time. Barry Bonds as a Pirate was up there, as were catcher Mike "Spanky" LaValliere and pitcher Doug Drabek. Dwight Gooden was awesome even though I hated the Mets. The Kid, Ken Griffey, Jr. Mario Lemieux. Terry Bradshaw, Greg Lloyd, and Dermonti Dawson as Steelers. Even though I didn't really get to see them play, Mel Blount and Jack Lambert. Flyin' Illini Kendall Gill and Kenny Battle. HS stud b-baller LaPhonso Ellis. Golfers Arnie Palmer, Lee Trevino, and Freddy "Boom-Boom" Couples. And finally, just because he jumped over a guy to dunk on him in an NCAA game, Fennis Dembo.

Roger Staubach, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Thurman Munson....in later years Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, Troy Aikman, Derrick Thomas.

Muhammad Ali, when I was little in the seventies. And, after he retired, he stayed my favourite. I was always a boxing fan, so through the eighties I was interested in Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Hearns, and to a lesser extent Tyson. By the time of Foreman's comeback, I was rooting for him all the way, mainly for nostalgic reasons as he'd been a figure from my childhood.

In baseball... it was Willie Mays (even though I was/am a Dodgers fan). I remember being at Dodgers Stadium and watching the pre-game batting practice and number 24's bat made the loudest sound hit a ton of baseballs into the bleachers.
In football... Gale Sayers. No one ran like before... and no one has run like him since. Sayers played on a horrible... HORRIBLE Bears team. Look up Rudy Buckich, Larry Rakestraw... those were his QBs. Sayers and Butkus... that was the Bears Offense and Defense.
Sure, other rushers have records.. but, no one... NO ONE has the moves.

Being from NJ my favorite teams are the NJ Giants and NY Yankees. Growing up I was a huge Mark Bavaro and Don Mattingly fan. My favorite active players are Amani Toomer and Mariano Rivera. Paul O'Neill is my all-time favorite player.

I'm guessing you're the same age as a twenty year old nephew of mine - who had all the little WWF figures, and that blue wrestling ring - and when you were about four, you spent hours chucking these figures at each other, and shouting "Let's Get Ready To Ruuuuuuuuuuuuumbleeeeeee!" :D
