My vet has this posted at her office, and I wanted to share in hopes it might help, if only just a little....
A Dog's Plea
And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health, hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently. I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath that I draw that my fate was always safest in your hands.

This last part is hard but so true. I see so many people keeping their pets alive when that is the last thing they should do. Again, I know how hard it is to part with a loved animal but please remember, their pain threshold is far greater than that of people. When they whine and cry from trying to move, you should know that you couldn't even begin to cope with what they are experiencing. Please let them go with as much grace and dignity as you would want...

i've said it before and i'll say it again. thanks everyone!
i always see people getting support and help on the forums, and to be honest, i often think "is internet message board support actually gonna help?". now i know that it really does, and i thank you all for it
my dog has had a bad front right leg over the last 6 months due to nerve problems and the vets had decided it needed to come off. We had come to terms with it, and i think my dog had too (as weird as that sounds)- what i mean is she didnt use the bad leg at all anyways, so she would cope well with 3.
Then, last week i run upstairs to get my shoes and i hear her starting to follow me up which isnt usually a problem for her, just a little strenuous, so i dart back to come back down to save her wasting her time. Before i do though i hear her stumble after 5 or 6 steps and then tumble down and fall. I thought she was fine just feeling stupid but she has fucked her back right leg.
The vet thinks she either has disc problems or a degenerative disease, but I cant deal with the fact that this happened so quickly! its so fucked up!
She just lies and cries now. You lift her outside to go to the toilet and she just lies on the grass and doesnt move. She woke me up this morning with her crying and had wet herself on the floor without moving away at all.
She is a shadow of herself and i think we are all avoiding the inevitable which is going to rear its ugly head soon but i dont think i could cope with that. I'm not overly emotional, I never cried at funerals really, i tend to not show it, but this wee dog has already made me cry my eyes out and i will be a mess when she's gone. she's just gone to the vets again and all i can think about is the point where she aint gonna come back.
I know people have much bigger problems in the grand scheme of life and a pet may seem insignificant in comparison, but MY GOD i didnt think I could be so fucked up emotionally over an animal.
sorry but i needed to vent so bad
FUCK!! I'm so very sad and sorry to hear this about your beloved dog...how terrible you must feel. Animals are family and when their sick it makes you feel horrible! ...I hope she will get better quickly.
And so the lion fell in love with the lamb...,"
"What a stupid lamb."
"What a sick, masochistic lion."

I think it's for the best. I feel for you :(. Maybe you can take some comfort in this:
If you ever love an animal, there are three days in your life you will always remember. The first is a day, blessed with happiness, when you bring home your new friend. You may have spent weeks deciding on a breed. You may have asked opinions of many friends or done research finding a breeder. Or, in a fleeting moment, you may have chosen that silly looking mutt at the shelter, simply because something in its eyes reached your heart. But when you bring that chosen pet home, and watch it explore…when you feel it brush against you for the first time, it instills a feeling of pure love you will carry with you through many years to come.
The second day will occur years later. It will be a day like any other. Routine and unexceptional. But, for a surprising instant, you will look at your longtime friend and see age where you once saw youth. You will see slow deliberate steps where you saw energy. You will see sleep where you once saw activity. You will begin to adjust your friend’s diet and you may add a pill to her food. And, you may feel a growing uneasy feeling until the third day arrives.
On this day, if your friend or your higher being has not decided for you, then you will be faced with making a decision of your own on behalf of your lifelong friend. Whichever way your friend leaves you, you will feel as alone as a single star in the dark night.
If you are wise, you will let the tears flow freely as they must. If you are typical, you will find that not many family and friends will be able to understand your grief. But, if you are true to the love of the pet you cherished through many joy-filled years, you may find that a soul, smaller in size than your own, seems to walk with you at times, during the lonely days to come. At those moments when you least expect anything out of the ordinary, you may feel something brush against your leg. And, looking down at the place where your dear friend used to lie… you will remember those three significant days. The memory will be painful. As time passes, the ache will come and go. You will reject it and embrace it and it may confuse you. If you reject it, it will depress you. If you embrace it, it will deepen you. Either way, it will still be an ache.
But, there will be a forth day when, along with the memory of your pet, and piercing through the heaviness in your heart, there will come a realization that belongs only to you. It will be as unique and strong as our relationship with the pet we have loved and lost. This realization takes the form of a Living Love, like the heavenly scent of a rose. This Love will remain and grow, and will be there for us to remember. It is a love we have earned. It’s the legacy our pets leave us when they go… and it’s a gift we keep with us as long as we live. And until we leave, perhaps to join our beloved pets, it is a Love we will always possess.

i am so deeply sorry. i know what heartbreak it is to have to make that sort of decision. definitely the people here are a big help, i know i had a lot of support when i had to go thru the same thing for my kitty trixie 2 years ago.
Something similar happened to my Boxer (Jamie Lee) in 2004. She was 10.5 years old and suddenly one day she had trouble walking and then she couldnt stand up move etc. It was a public holiday so we rang an emergency vet, carried her in and got told he couldn't do anything because he had no staff on so and he advised we take her home.
We had the opportunity of having one last night with her....knowing that she probably going to be put down the next day. We slept in the lounge room and hugged her all night. By that stage, she couldn't walk at all with her back two legs.
They did x-rays the next day and she had a big blotchy spot (possibly cancer) near her lower back and her lower discs had degenerated and collapsed.
She was our little baby and it was HEARTBREAKING! My boyfriend and I held a paw each as they put her to sleep. I'm so glad we got that last night together.
Don't drag it out if she's in pain. Jamie Lee was PANTING heaps and we learned that excessive panting is a sign of pain. Poor baby.
Good luck....I totally feel your pain. I suppose I'm lucky it only lasted for 2 days for me. :(
I went through a similar situation with my dog several years ago, and you are absolutely right that putting him down is what your dog would ask you to do if he could speak english.
And I have to praise this vet's conscience for suggesting the same because I know that their office could use the money from doing a spinal surgery.
But, one thing to be almost sure of about vets is that they are not doing it for the money.
But, yeah, the sooner you end his suffering, the better. The idea of him lying on the floor crying through the night almost turns my stomach. But, I know you don't mean for that to be the case.
