I think it's possible that the movie didn't precisely capture McCandless' personality... well entirely possible of course...
While I understand his ideals, he did come off as slightly arrogant in some scenes. I think what it boils down to is the impetuousness and impressionability of youth. I still don't understand why he ate the poison plant without first consulting the book he had... seems like the first logical step when you come across something you think might be edible in the wild. I only refer to the feelings derived from the movie though, as I have no real understanding of the actual man or the events that led to his death."this one, anytime I say love if you wanna say love, uh, say it, and if you say it you might as well say it loud, and if you don't feel like sayin' it, don't say it, but if you feel it, certainly say it..."

he did consult his book. he just misintrepretted the orientation of lateral veins on his food source. apparently. no one knows for sure cause he was alone.
and yes he made some foolish mistakes. unfortuantely he paid for them with his life. i dont think he was arrogant just out of his league. and ill-equipped.hear my name

A fair observation. I stand corrected."this one, anytime I say love if you wanna say love, uh, say it, and if you say it you might as well say it loud, and if you don't feel like sayin' it, don't say it, but if you feel it, certainly say it..."
