Anyone else a hippie. Had long hair and a beard for 5 years, only recently got it cut.

That said, I have always, even as a younger child knew I looked at things differently, saw the world differently from others.

I always knew my destiny, my purpose in life was, although it still isnt clear to me what exactly that is, isnt an office job or some 9-5 thing. For others, an office job, or a some corporate lackey type job may be exactly what they want. But my own personal destiny, is something different.

I am a fan of Kerouac, Ginsberg and others. I listen to Jam Bands. I am a radical. I dont consider myself a part of "their society".

Oh and I spent 3 weeks at a hippie commune.

Anyone else consider themselves a hippie?

I consider myself a hippie - my husband and most of my friends call me one. Not because of how I look, but because of the way I live my life, my views, and the music I listen to.

I totally believe in Karma, in taking care of the Earth as best we can, and in peace. I would love to think that in my lifetime we would have total peace in this world....... I love to wear flowy cotton sundresses and birkenstocks, I went to Grateful Dead and Phish shows, I cried when Jerry Garcia died like he was a family member, and I love going to Bonnaroo every year. My favorite insence is Patchouli :D My favorite flowers are daisies. So I think I fit many of the hippie stereotypes.

I do however shower every day, have a good full time job with benefits, own a home, and shave all my bits :P

I've always been a tree hugger. I live by the mantra reduce, reuse, recycle. I buy fair trade and organic. I've been called a hippy by others, so yeah...count me in. As if the screen name wasn't enough of a giveaway

In the sixties, apparently, there used to be a subtle dichotomy between the hippies and the freaks. Guess which one I am! :D

    Some of us liked you!

    lol

I don't consider myself a hippie, but some folks jokingly call me a hippie. Why I'm not a hippie: I'm a lawyer, I wear a suit everyday, I work in an office, I shower every day. Why folks call me a hippie: I don't have cable television, I am mostly vegetarian, I am an environmentalist, I love going to see jam bands play, I want to learn yoga, if I lived in an ideal world, I would quit my job and become an organic farmer and beekeeper. I would still always take a shower daily though.

People often times think I'm a hippy environmentalist when they talk to me or smoke out with me and then they notice my shaved head and .44 Ruger strapped to my side... After that they just get confused.

I'd be willing to bet that in real life you would find me to be one of the nicest people you ever met... And you would always be safe in my presence, especially if we were in the mountains.

obviously, you are not all that 'different' if you can identify with many others, and feel a part of a larger group, clearly identified as 'hippies.' it may not be 'mainstream' society...but it is a collective community and a larger society in and of itself, and really not all that 'different' anymore. many, many people follow and live such lifestyles.

"you are unique, just like everyone else."
    :D

i am not a hippie. i do follow many of the beliefs, but i think of that more as a 'green mentality' than hippie. i too never thought i would work 9-5, etc.....and i didn't. now i do though, and for my current goals it's all good. :) that's the thing with life. we all grow and change. if we're lucky. and this is not to say one would want to 'grow out of' being in a hippie mindset, just saying....it's amazing all that happens in a life.

    enjoy the ride!

I guess the real difference between me and most hippies is our definition of karma. I am absolutely a peace loving, dirt eating, tree-hugging, artistic hippy in every sense of the word. However, I believe sometimes karma needs a shove in the right direction. I don't wait around for the cosmos to take care of the bad guys for me when I am quite capable of doing it myself. I believe in standing up for what is right... always.

Of course not. You can never get any kind of group to all believe the exact same thing. However, I think hippy minded people tend to embrace the concept more than others.

To me, it's like if somebody were to hurt my wife, I wouldn't wait for the justice system or the cosmos to take care of the problem. I would gladly do it myself.

    gotcha.
your earlier post seemed to suggest, or i at least inferred, that you did mean they all believe in karma. now i see what you mean, and yea......i would agree it's probably outside the typical hippie mindset.

btw - i don't see your example as a 'hippie' thing, more of a justice or pacifist thing. one does not need to be a hippie to believe or follow such ideas. then again, that's always the problem with labels, they fit, but not always so well.

Absolutely. Yes, one should always be careful about talking in absolutes. There is always the exception... or two.

But anyway, I certainly dont look hippie, but I am more "hippie" than anyone else I know.
