Funny how life goes...
Yesterday I heard some news that really bummed me out; the Rialto Theater, here in South Pasadena, is closing its doors.
I can't actually judge how famous this classic theater is (it was prominently featured in the movie The Player), but I do know that it is a big deal 'round these parts, and an even bigger deal to me personally.
The Rialto is a single screen theater that showed its first film in 1926.
Putting that in cinematic terms:
--That's roughly four Lindsay Lohan's ago.
--Ingmar Bergman was just eight years old when she first entertained audiences (The Rialto, not Lindsay).
--She was already ten years old when Chaplin's Modern Times debuted.
...in short, she's seen it all. And she she was kind enough to show it all to me.
Reflecting on my life at the Rialto has made my day...
Sitting secure in her balcony, my friends and I witnessed Blade Runner.
My older sister let me, her annoying thirteen year old brother, tag along when she and her college-friends went to see Stop Making Sense...the Talking Heads concert movie.
When I was fifteen, my grandmother took me to see a revival of Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry because it was her favorite, and she wanted to share it with me. At the time, I was kinda embarrassed to be seen going to the movies on a Friday night with my grandmother, but today it's one of my fondest memories.
I've sat in those queerly comfortable seats with practically every girlfriend I've ever had. In fact, my ex-wife lived a stone's throw from the marquee. I pitched woo between showings of Ma Vie en Rose, Smoke Signals, and some god-awful thing starring Jason Priestly.
If you've read this far, you probably get the point: this glorious hall will be missed. And, although I am sad, it did "make my day" to saunter down the trail The Rialto has left in my life and to ponder the interconnected trail it has blazed through the lives of all those who have experienced her glory, whether it was in 1926, 1966, or 2006.
My twin got a job offer from a really good law firm in her field to start after she finishes law school. So cool!

hearing a new Ed Vedder song from the new soundtrack album he's done
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
Should we change this thread to the :COMEBACKGIRL & ZOSO Thread???
