I never really cared about it either as I don't suffer from it (or anyone in my family). But a friend of mind has mega problems with cold sores (she's really run down, going through messy divorce, just got over - hopefully - breast cancer) and she was really upset of what people were saying.. even calling her 'unclean' and generally pointing the finger at her because of the cold sores (thinking they are only sexually transmitted). She was even trying to justify herself to me!!!!

I just felt compelled to clarify that bit... don't know why... just hate preconceptions.

I feel the same way man. I'm glad I know the difference now. Thanks.

this may sound strange, and i don't know if it will help, but if i use crest toothpaste, the inside of my mouth burns and i start getting sores on my gums and the inside of my lip. i've never had a problem with canker sores so i don't know what to tell you there. anytime i get a bump on my tongue, like from a virus or something, i'll rinse my mouth out with hot salty water and it goes away within 24 hours. i hope you find something that helps!

  • Dab them with BAKING SODA. It will taste awful, but it is an antacid and will neutralize the acid that is causing the ulceration and pain.

Trust me on this. It works.

i haven't read through all the replies, but when I have a canker sore I gargle with warm water and salt... and it always works. It usually takes a day or two for them to ease down.

Isn't the chicken pox, cold soars and herpes the same thing? Apparently most of us, some 90% have herpes. There's different strands of herpes and it flares up in some people more than others. Most people carry herpes, but it has no effect on them. I was told this my friend who's an E.R. doctor. He's either right or a very bad E.R. doctor.
  • When I was younger my sister and I would get them all the time. Usually more then one at a time. I always gargle peroxide and listerine, and salt water.

In the last 3 or 4 years I don't really get them anymore. Usually only when I bite my lip bad. I have one right now, which has been around for almost a week and sucks bad, but it was where I bit my lip.

    Wish they had a cure.

I've also been told to not use paste style toothpaste, use the gels. But who knows.

I can handle a cold, but canker sores that's where the research should be!!!

Go to the store and get a small jar of alum. Put the alum on the canker sore and it will be gone tomorrow.

I used to get them when I was a kid and that's what my mom would do and it worked everytime.

I used to get them a lot. I used to just use origel or whatever and that used to help the stinging. I don't get them as much but I notice I will get them sometimes after I get my teeth cleaned. I think my gums get irritated.

  • never had one...that sounds brutal. Is that like athletes foot of the mouth or something?

I would dial in the diet a bit to see what happens and how it effects them. Yikes! I never knew they could happen on the inside of the mouth - are they contagious?

I get canker sores all the time. For me, they develop from a sore in my mouth. If I accidentally bite the inside of my cheek while eating, it will be a canker sore in a couple days. They don't bother me at all unless it's in a spot that gets irritated when I talk.
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

i swear by this method. dip a q-tip in vanilla extract and put it on the sore. stings a little at first, but it will make it feel a 100 times better, and tastes good. peace

possible yes definitely...I'm living proof. never ever in 36 years...and I bite the inside of my cheeks near my lips fairly often as someone mentioned that somehow triggered theirs.

I've actually never broken a bone either, and I've pulled off some pretty radical shit downhill skiing. I must be the chosen one...
