That book fascinated me.  Quite a cast of characters.
The ambassador and his daughter alone were very intriguing. I really liked this book but anything I've read by Larson has been fabulous!
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Anyone the least bit interested in current world affairs should read this book.  It frames a country's foreign diplomacy motivations through the lens of geography.

I'm reading Michael McFaul's From Cold War to Hot Peace (and yes, I started it before Helsinki). It's very well-written, as I would expect. McFaul is wicked smart and is one of the top experts on Russia.

Working my way back to a book that inspired many of today's writers of mountaineering literature, Maurice Herzog's Annapurna.  This is a great story and a classic in it's field, though I have to admit to struggling a bit with Herzog's writing style, the difficulty compounded by reading an old hardback with small print and heavily tanned pages.  My poor old eyes- but I will get there!

Unless a bright light is shining directly on the pages and it is early in the day I cannot read books with print like that any longer.  It stinks.
As always, talk of this makes me think of Burgess Merideth's classic Twilight Zone episode.

  • Geek Love !!! I can’t get over how good it is. I’ve only finished the first part but it’s basically a story of a circus family that have been torn apart and he story of their deformities and the lives they lead.

Really terrifying to read the neglect and abuse that this girl and her brothers and sister suffered at the hands of their mentally ill Dad and the mom who did little to protect them.  This family was a prepper/survivalist strictly Mormon family living in Idaho about the same time as the Ruby Ridge incident.

I read The Crossing, and I had to stop a lot. Every page I expected violence. It was tough for me. I will read Cities of the Plain to finish the triology.
