Mayweather didn't care...so why would Gina?

I don't know if she cares I know I do. Not only am I a fan of MMA but have trained in several arts incorporated in MMA for several years now, am currently sidelined with a knee injury. So I certainly would loose respect for her if she decided to turn her back on MMA and go onto do some staged theatrics at WWE.

Look, if she used the WWE as a vehicle to keep her name out there and do an angle with one of Vince's wrestlers for a Wrestlemania PPV, and then left after to do Affliction, would you seriously care? It's not that much more "entertainment" than Gladiators, quite frankly. I can't imagine that MMA fans would say "Oh, I'll never watch her again." Ken Shamrock and Brock Lesner had WWE connections and I'm sure you had no problem watching them. In fact, you'll probably be ordering the Couture vs. Brock PPV before most people, so if Brock doesn't have the "wrestling taint" for being a WWE champ, I'm pretty sure Gina would survive appearing for a bit in WWE.

What's your opinion on Ken Shamrock's time in the WWF?
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

You do make a good point, and I will be ordering the PPV but not because of Lesner. I guess I would be disappointed because I do enjoy watching her fight and it would be a shame, if she left MMA completely for WWE because of money or lack of opportunities in MMA, to not see her fight anymore. Whether she, or other people, like it or not she is the face of women's MMA and to have it's biggest star leave the sport would really affect up and coming female fighters. It's bad enough the people like Dana White will not give women a chance. They need someone like Carano to stick it out in the sport and pave the way for them.

I don't like Ken Shamrock and my problem is not with them being in the WWE it's that Carano has an opportunity to really break open women's MMA. She is the face of the sport and if she decides to turn and go to WWE it will be a huge setback to women's MMA.

Not because of Lesner? Why then? Couture is fighting somebody and the undercard isn't marquee.

I'm ordering because of Couture. I love watching him fight. Like I said in my earlier post. It really isn't a dislike of WWE, though I do dislike it. It's the notion that she is dropping MMA because women can't make it in the sport. Whether that is the true reason or not that is how it will be perceived.

I understand your point about women MMA and they deserve an outlet to compete like men if they want to. But back to Couture, let's be honest, if he was competing against a Nate Quarry type (nothing against Nate) would you order the PPV? Your interest is piqued a bit to see if he survives against Brock, who is still a novice in some regards to MMA but it looks to be quite the contest.

I still would have ordered the fight but yes I am interested to see how he fights Brock. I haven't seen Brock fight yet so I can't attest to how good he is.

Okay, you just made my point. You are interested to see how he fights against Brock. You don't really care that Brock was a WWE champ and him being a phony champ won't dissuade you from ordering the PPV. Your earlier comment of "I just don't see Gina going to WWE. She would loose so much respect that she may as well retire from professional fighting" is a bit of a stretch, no? Can you imagine someone saying that about Brock if, say he started in Elite, got a following and then went to WWE before UFC? You would've had no respect for him doing WWE, when in fact it really doesn't effect his credibility at all by doing WWE. That's my point. Gina wouldn't really lose any respect if she spent a year with WWE and then went to UFC if Dana created a role a year from now. That was my point.

I don't think it plays out the same for men as it does for women. Women are at a disadvatage in the sport. You have the top promoter in the sport pretty much saying that women can't fight. If the top fighter, the face of women's MMA, leaves it will be viewed as a failure for women's MMA. She needs to stick with the sport and continue to fight to bring forwards women's MMA. Lesner and Shamrock are not the faces of their sport and came into a largely established sport as it is.

I just don't think too many people would care, quite frankly. Nobody cares that Mayweather did boxing and he was the biggest draw on PPV in boxing besides De La Hoya the past 3 years. Being man or woman, if she did WWE people are intelligent enough to know that it's like acting or if she took a movie role. I don't think Women's MMA would suffer at all, but that's just IMHO. I guess we can agree to disagree.

I forgot about Strikeforce. If I was white I would put together a fight card to air on Spike with a Carano/Santos fight on it. Check out the ratings during their match and go from there. Putting them on PPV would be a mistake for the first fight. They need to build up a following and after UFC fans start seeing these women fight and how bad ass they are White will change his stance.

it was crazy to see how much the numbers spiked for the women's matches, especially in the last show. i hope you are right about the ufc changing that stance. i've always enjoyed cards with a mixture of talent and weight classes on them, and a women's bout or two can really add to a card. it's unfortunate that there is such a wide gap between the really good female mixed martial artists and the average fighters right now. i think we'll see that change in the next couple of years, though, and the sport could really take off.

it's just a shame that fighters like julie kedzie, shayna baszler, tara larosa, amanda buckner, roxanne modafferi, etc. are so much fun to watch and yet not many seem willing to give them a shot on their shows in north america. they're just as talented, sometimes moreso, than their male counterparts and they can't even get a stage to compete on sometimes. sad.

time to take matters into my own hands and start a women's mma organization, i guess! :D

We can write up a business plan and hit up some investors for start up capital.

i'm sure it can't be very difficult! ;):D if only a person had a few million just sitting around to just blow...could put together a super women's card and not care about returns. just put it on for the fans and to get some exposure for these talented fighters.

now to look up the definitions of "business plan", "investors", and "capital"...:D haha

oh, and you guys were talking about the lesnar vs. couture card...i'm really looking forward to quarry vs. maia. anyway, i mention it because you guys reminded me...i saw someone doing a preview of the card the other day and they were talking about how quarry would want to get this fight to the ground as soon as possible...what the fudge?!?! :D
  • by the way, anyone read the Couture book? If so, why no pictures on that Trish girl? Curious on what she looked like. Must have been a bad divorce.

have been meaning to check that out. i've enjoyed loretta hunt's coverage of mma, so i thought she would do a good job on this.

i'm not sure about the pictures. i watched the biography episode a while ago and i seem to remember one of his ex-wives not being on the program. i could be wrong about that. he seems to have a good relationship with his kids, but it does sound like both divorces were a bit messy as randy had been cheating in both cases.

    the book is good?

  • good show:

UFC officially announced Forrest Griffin vs. Rashad Evans for the 205-pound title, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir for the heavyweight title in a battle of TUF VIII coaches, and Wanderlei Silva vs. Quinton Jackson in their third match (Silva killed him the first two times in PRIDE) for the December 27th show at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Those are some damn good fights. The next few months are lined up with good fight cards. This weekend should be a good night as well with Silva/Cote and Alves/Koscheck. Hopefully they will also broadcast the Spencer Fisher/Shannon Gugerty fight even though it's not on the main card. Fisher is a great fighter who always puts on a good show.
